The Soft Moon – The Soft Moon [CT085]

From the Bauhaus-influenced record cover, to the dead thuds that pound every corner of  “The Soft Moon”, there is something imposing and stark about Luis Vasquez’s debut record. It casts a bleak shadow, like a graying tower block. The record heavily recalls the industrial and goth 1980s, eras of music bathed in blackness, yet beneath the squall and the otherwise monolithic sound poke out some impressive moments of clarity.

Jaakko Eino Kalevi – Modern Life [HELMI036]

Fresh, exciting synthpop album from Finland’s Jaakko Eino Kalevi. “Modern Life” is a tradition-conscious and rather minimalist disco, definitely dance music. The album includes a couple of killer hitting, but otherwise the atmosphere is dreamlike and peaceful.

Seattle’s 214 (TwoFourteen) is next in line for some Harbour City Sorrow ear candy. His Miami roots are clearly present in his strong booming beat programming but Puerto Rico born Chris Roman has more tricks up his sleeve as his style crosses many borders. It’s a solid electro-techno affair on this EP.

Virgo Four – Resurrection [RH113CD]

https://i0.wp.com/www.residentadvisor.net/images/reviews/2011/rh113cd.jpg

“Resurrection” is the follow up to the reissue of Virgo (Four)’s S/T album, which was released by Rush Hour in 2010. This album is a collection of unreleased tracks that were produced over a 6 year period between 1984 and 1990 in various home studios around Chicago. These tracks were selected from 100’s of 4-track tapes that had been untouched and unreleased all these years due to local record business politics and disinterest. These demo recordings have been restored and mastered for release. The CD release holds 15 tracks, while the limited edition vinyl box set contains another 15 tracks, totaling a cool 30 tracks.
“Resurrection” really shows the rich, diverse and unique quality of Virgo Four, which leaves you wondering what impact they would have made on the (Chicago) house scene if they would have gotten released back in the day.
