A-Side ‘Throw In Dirt’ opens with vintage drum machines locked into a stooped groove as hi-hats spark off the top while a heavily filtered and pitched vocal loop offers dead eyed encouragement. After such an oppressive opener, ‘The Land’ is a noticeable change of pace. A horizon spanning kick underpins gospel’ish vocal snatches as the familiar hissing of synthesized cymbals shifts and builds on top of bass that’s more shudder than line.

There’s a definite Berlin weight behind the monstrous kick on “Clifetelli” which sounds primed for Panoramabar, but it’s not all fist-pumping brawn as “Good” proves. Displaced flurries of drums appear occasionally, but really this track is all about the haunting melodic refrain.

A-side ‘Exposure’ hears an ambulance-like siren pan across a desolate landscape of buzzing and humming static. It’s bleak but somehow optimistic and sounds typically ‘live’, whilst ‘Postatomicpoetry’ has a heavy bottom end thudding deep down below as various machine noises and electric wires stretch out in all directions above. It’s chilly, hostile and heady, building in highly hypnotic layers like only Morphosis can.

Having become something of a regular fixture in the Mote Evolver camp, Shifted is back once again to head up Side A of the second Parallel Series 12″. As you might expect, the techno comes bleak and throbbing from the Shifty one, although avoiding excessive heaviness over immersive progression and dubby FX. On the flip Samuli Kemppi plies his quirkier trade, using offbeat synth mess to counteract the steady rhythm of the bottom end on “Trans Neptunian”. “Detached Object” meanwhile fires off streams of interlocking sounds which spiral around the relentless kick for a classy exercise in techno restraint.

Flipside ‘Between A Sleep And A Sleep’ relies on a more subtle sense of swing and hypnotic layering to deliver the desired effect, before they gorge on bludgeoning kicks and skin-flailing noise with remorseless brutality on ‘She Belongs To An Eternity’.
