Protect-U – The Protect U EP [VIB006]

Protect-U move to Vibrations for this four-track EP of foggy analogue house oddities. “Wild Drift” opens proceedings with a flowing piece of arpeggiated machine funk, shifting through a myriad of hazy moods, whilst “Ultra (Basic mix)” utilizes a conga led rhythm and aquatic bassline in combination with dramatic lead melody. This track is revisited on the flip, as “Slow Ultra” gives a reversion characterized by its shimmering, intertwining pads punctuated by a rich bassline. The EP is closed by “Bright After Dark”, undoubtedly the moodiest track of the bunch; foregoing the relatively rich melodies of its counterparts, it focuses instead on swampy atmospherics and an industrial squelch.

Kontravoid – Native State [CITI006]

KONTRAVOID - Native State

The name Kontravoid belongs on a limited run cassette circa 1980-something, the type of tape buried in lost upstate dustbins of pre-MIDI analog electronics, wedged between Cabaret Voltaire and Das Ding. The dark industrial and new wave influences are strong on ex-Crystal Castles drummer Cam Findlay’s new project—his voice is scary, like an echoing underwater growl—but the underlying pop melodies always afford a degree of breathing room.On his debut self-titled album, Kontravoid turns to analogue synths to create a dark, brooding pop masterpiece. His brilliant vocals emit a dystopic low-grown, often running through warped effects accompanied by exceptionally stirring arpeggiated synths and washes of sound. Modern touchstones could parallel the likes of John Maus or Trust, but Kontravoid’s vision is a much more twisted one, embracing goth influences and yielding a monstrous result that is harder to define. Despite its sonic vampiricism, Kontravoid’s music leaves plenty to dance and lose your mind to, but the imagination here goes way beyond these activities exclusively. The tracks Native State and Cut To Cleanse are exclusive 7” only versions.

VA – Les Annees Folles [GOOILAND01/ET016]

This record is a soundtrack for excentric nightlife,  bringing back to life images of wild parties at artists workspaces in Paris in the 1920’s, early mornings in Belgian nightclubs in the late 1980’s and driving classic Italian sports cars during long hot summer nights.

VA – So Click Heels [DOWNWARDSCLICK001]

Downwards’ collect the best of their DO series, together with a handful of exclusive aces on ‘So Click Heels’. Since 2009 the label’s affections for the miasmatic drizzle, sonic innovation and repressed violence of post-punk and shoegaze has manifested itself in some twelve releases veering between the scuzzy basement noise of Collin Gorman Weiland, the blissful feedback blooms of The KVB, and swaggering rock’n’roll from DVA Damas. A good proportion of them feature here – including Richard H Kirk’s droning remix of Tropic Of Cancer’s ‘Be Brave’, the desiccated drum machines of Sandra Electronics (Regis), and Pink Playground’s powdered-glass shoegaze bloomer ‘Ten”. Unreleased bits: the phet-clenched twitch of Deathday’s ‘Dropped Into Obscurity’ or V West’s ‘Catching Me Cold’; the excoriating sludge of The KVB’s ‘Dayzed’; a mighty slab of monochrome, motorik punk from Silent Servants (Juan Mendez); the psychoactivated rock ‘n roll of Green Screen Door; and not least an insidious Electro cut from Antonym, or the graphite surfaces and choking dust of Six Six Seconds’ ‘Tearing Down Heaven’.

Gareth Williams & Mary Currie – Flaming Tunes [BLACKEST009]

Blackest Ever Black is releasing the first ever vinyl edition of Gareth Williams and Mary Currie’s Flaming Tunes. This remarkable album was recorded at DDM and Cold Storage in London after Williams had left This Heat and returned from the first of several trips to India. It was officially released on cassette in 1985, before being bootlegged on CD more than a decade later. The bootleg in question, the Japan-issued After The Heat, described the Flaming Tunes pieces as ”This Heat’s final demo recordings”, much to Gareth’s understandable dismay – after all, the album marked a conscious attempt to create a music with a different mood and texture to that of This Heat, one which would allow the full expression of his eclectic and distinctive tastes. In 2009, twenty-four years after the original cassette release and eight after Williams’ death, aged 48, from cancer, Life & Living Records – an independent label operated by his close friends – released the first and definitive CD edition of Flaming Tunes. Where possible, L&L went back to the original master tapes to achieve the best possible sound quality. The album – is one of the most unique, poignant and poetic ever to emerge from the British underground, its visionary power matched only by its playfulness and intimacy – has never had a life on vinyl.

Morphology – Landform [13DIAM]

Diametric is pleased to announce the return of Morphology with a release of four new deep electro/techno tracks. Being praised as one of the finest electro acts in recent years, this new twelve-inch showcases why this praise is so well-deserved. The Finnish duo, Michael Diekmann and Matti Turunen deliver their mix of superb machine funk, electro beats and melancholic deep synth work to perfection here. ‘Herschel Crater’ will cause some serious frenzy on the dancefloor with its straightforward beats and dark sequence that respectfully nods toward the sound of Drexciya.

Shit & Cheap ‎– Götterdämmerung EP [SHIP015]

Neil Landstrumm & Mat Consume with their Shit & Cheap deliver some totally unexpected raw & raving electro banger for the Dutch Shipwrec label. Inspired by 60’s surf & garage and later punk & wave, the drum machines are set to give us the essential kick’s, clap’s and hihat’s we need for that oldschool electro vibe. The Trashmen’s Surfin’ Bird gets a remake dipped in acid and with Shadowlands pre-dubstep skills take control, but nevertheless, all tracks have those wobly basslines typical to Landstrumm’s music combined with unique vocals that make this release something special and definitely standing out.

DMX Krew – Decaying World EP [TONES002]

London rave collective come record label Wavey Tones do it right with their second release, securing four tracks from Rephlex regular DMX Krew. Operating under all manner of aliases, the UK artists is renowned for delivering consistently varied sounds and the Decaying World 12″ confirms that wide ranging reputation. Lead track “Mustard Parasol” is a half-stepping tune which slip neatly between the modern UK Bass movement and the synth explorations of Legowelt, whilst the title track starts off with a powerful electro-tinged bassline but quickly transforms into a bumpy drum machine workout filled with superlative effects and yet more mutated sonics. Over on the B-side, “Flat Rate” enters the acid kingdom and pushes forward with sharp snares and dreamy voices, whilst “Three Days Of Entropy” slams back to the 80’s for an inspired synth trip with neat bursts of punchy percussion and far-out, tweeting melodies.
