The Fear Ratio – Skana EP [BP035]

FEAR RATIO, The - Skana

James Ruskin and Mark Broom return to Blueprint Records as The Fear Ratio with ‘Skana EP’. The EP delivers four new beautifully crafted cuts, while still lending themselves to the dancefloor. With their tough, heavy basslines, overlaid with syncopated beats, clipped tones and synth led melodies, ‘Skana EP’ continues where ‘Light Box’ left off and shows once again why these two talented UK producers are still at the very top of their game.

Mike Huckaby – The Tresor EP [TRESOR252]

Tresor memorialised its two decades of existence with an exclusive mix from one of its esteemed Detroit connections, Mike Huckaby. On that mix, Mike Huckaby included an exclusive production of his, the first one to be released on Tresor Records. Now they the “The Tresor Track” are pressed on wax, making up for a massive A.side cut at 45 RPM. On the flip, Mike Huckaby goes for a stroll through the Tresor building, heading downstairs, exploring the room’s darkest and most twisted corners with Basement Trax, going back towards “The Upstairs Lounge” and surprising his audience with some original rhythmic patterns.

Deep Throat / Linda Lovelace – Gag Reflex / Angry Dragon [BBW001]

“Gag Reflex” is one of those tracks that tears down the walls! You’ll find yourself fist pumping to this one day at some obscure techno party! Influences of early 90’s Detroit Techno all the way up to darkest & sweatiest corner in the Berghain. On the flip ”Angry Dragon” focuses its energy on the synth work. The overlaying 909 claps adds more aural pleasure rounding off the package in proper form.

Imperious Spanish imprint Deep Explorer reaches release number 26 with a split EP featuring Altered Mood’s Malcolm Moore alongside long time Explorer Bjak (real name Brian Cullen). Bjak’s two cuts – “Rhythm Of Love” and “Purple Fire” – are both produced with typically immaculate poise, but it’s the sultry nature of the latter cut that had everyone at Juno HQ swooning. Malcolm Moore meanwhile serves up the swooping chords and rock hard bump of “Love (A Perilous Thing)”, which features an ethereal vocal contribution from Debra Jones-Davis, who talks about the dangers of the “L” word while the lush arrangement works deep below in the mix. Jenifa Mayanja rounds off a consummate package with a shuffling, Latin-influenced remix of “Love (A Perilous Thing)”.

Full album from the astonishingly talented JuJu & Jordash. This time crossing their more psych side with their proto-everything electronics. Continuing their distinctive synthesis of spaced-out jazz un-standards, murky dub and hypnotic electronics, Juju & Jordash exploit the triple vinyl format to launch a mission bound for the innermost depths of their sound. It’s obvious the writing and production have reached a new level in their exciting evolution. Now it’s time for the music to reach an audience beyond just techno and house.
