Khotin – Aloe Drink [PR017]

Public Release adds another entry to its 2018 chapter with a four-track EP that engineers the intersection of gentle warm-up house of the Balearic genus and frosty chill-out. The 12-inch is the latest from Dylan Khotin-Foote, who goes by the mononym Khotin, a producer and DJ firmly planted at the epicenter of Vancouver’s lively, colorful dance music scene.

Khotin – Baikal Acid [1080V006]

Having first made an impression via a couple of chugging disco reworks on Common Edit, Khotin has spent the last couple of years delving deeper into the world of analogue-rich deep house, ambient and electronica. Here he continues this trend, returning to 1080p for the first time in two years. Naturally, it’s a woozy, dreamy and occasionally intergalactic affair, with the Canadian producer doffing a cap to early ’90s IDM (“Recycle (Drift Mix)”), acid-flecked dreaminess (“Human Voice”), and undulating, Mood Hut-ish deepness (“Recycle (5AM Reflection Mix)”). Best of all, though, is “Baikal Acid”, which somehow manages to draw all these strands together on one picturesque, clattering gem.

Dan White / Khotin – Split [NRML017]

Khotin (Normals Welcome resident) returns for his second release on our imprint. He joins up with Australia’s Dan White, whose release on Forbidden Planet found its way into our record bags this past year. Deep space acid vibe on this one.

Khotin – For U To Feel [HTH004]

After making his debut with a delightfully dusty scalpel job on Canada’s Common Edit imprint, Khotin spent 2014 showcasing home-made blends of new age deep house and intoxicating “intelligent techno” on 1080p and Normals Welcome. Here, he pops up on Heart To Heart with more melodious, dreamy, retro-futurist fare. There’s naturally much to admire throughout, from the relentless drum machine handclaps, swirling pads and crystalline hits of “AT03”, to the intergalactic textures, thumping kick-drums and spacey electronics of “XP Waste”. Best of all, though, is “For U To Feel”, whose bubbling electronics and picture postcard melodies are brilliantly offset by a clattering drum machine groove.

VA – Dark Acid IV [CDR12012]

Glasgow’s Clan Destine Records present the fourth volume of the essential Dark Acid series. As you’d expect, the included material is as trippy, intense and left-of-centre as you’d expect. Canadian producer Khotin kicks things off with “Tsoi”, a deep, psychedelic acid shuffler that builds incessantly towards a breathless climax. Varg’s “Ultra Acid” takes things up further via ghetto-tech inspired beats and icy melodies, before Kid Who drops a twisted chunk of midtempo acid chug (the delightfully claustrophonic “Gap Related Injury”). Finally, Becoming Real’s Toby Ridler and Golden Teacher/General Ludd man Richard McMaster join forces for “Terminator”, as intense an acid track as you’re likely to find.
