MGUN – Gentium [DBALP001]

Detroit native MGUN aka Manuel Gonzales returns from a two year break from releasing to unveil his debut LP for Don’t Be Afraid, marking the UK-based label’s first artist album. In drawing from these recordings and methods developed over such a long period of time, Gentium captures the growth of a modern electronic artist in a way few albums do, charting the evolution from an unknown quantity in the birthplace of techno to the DJ & producer widely admired today for the fresh immediacy of his approach.

”About half of these tracks were made in my childhood home between 2007 and 2010. Most were recorded on cassette then digitized on a Windows millennium edition PC. I would record these to the standard WAV recorder you can find in the sound preferences, which from there it was possible to use primitive effects to manipulate the audio file.” ”The other half were produced in my current home studio, using somewhat of the same system I used back then, one take for the most part. There is hardly any multi-tracking involved with any of my productions. I use a basic WAV editor to manipulate recordings as well as various analog recording mediums beforehand.”

Manuel Gonzales – Full Frontal [BH011]

Detroit’s Manuel Gonzalez on Berceuse again. Manuel hits the groove hard and soft in two Detroit techno joints. A-side, ‘Full Frontal’ comes for your booty at 138bpm inna old skool UR or Rob Hood style, layering the kicks with chirruping alien bleeps and discordant synth surges. B-side he links up with Ramon Ramirez for the much more personable ‘Blowout’ yielding dubbed-out kosmiche synth expressions anchored by a billowing B-line at 118bpm.

MGUN / Halvtrak – Diet Research / Imaginary Water [BAKK003]

The Hague based BAKK Records with a split EP by MGUN (Manuel Gonzales) and Halvtrak. Detroit local MGUN already proved to be one of the more talented new producers and this time delivers a true trunk full of funk. The laser sword synths whip through the big space of the roomy kicks and the snare hits the nail on the head, a guaranteed floor filler. Crossing the Atlantic towards Finland / Helsinki, Halvtrak shares a journey into his forming yet already signature sound. A smooth sailing analog track with trippy acid sounds – a perfect fit for both those during peak time as the early morning racers.

Manuel Gonzales – Filth EP [WB015]

Wicked Bass label presents a new release by newly emergent Detroit talent Manuel Gonzales, aka MGUN. Opener ‘Mono Port’ is a sludgy, dirty track with scuzzy ambiance, grainy white noise and plenty of grit obscuring buried deep kick drums and raw synth patterns. Second track ‘Frosted Lakes’ is a just as knackered sounding bit of whacked out techno. Broken kick drums trudge below spiralling synths, static interference and the general imperfect buzz and hum of analogue gear and it builds into a loopy banger that will blow minds as well as speakers. Last is ‘Chip Implemented’, another dystopian bit of depraved sounding techno with groaning synths, hurried drums and plenty of stormy winds blowing across its face. This is hugely textured, darkly cerebral music that manages to be minimal in design yet maximal in impact from start to finish.

New release on The Trilogy Tapes label by Mgun aka Manuel Gonzales. Deadly sick, ambient and stepping by turns, it’s an essential offering for anyone interested in the outer reaches of house and bass music. Opener ‘2’ is a stuttering, bleepy techno number, followed by the dense, almost psychedelic layers of guitars and distortion that is ‘Walk With Me’. Sleazoid electro banger ‘The Race’ closes side A. ‘Flutter’s Brother’ is a muffled 3/4 time techno rumbler. ‘Shamen’ goes for a skippy garage feel, albeit one with hobnail boots on. Final track ‘Tiles’ is a combination of computer language and speaker-blowing sub bass.
