VA – Use Of Weapons 6 [UOW006]

Deep Space Orchestra’s Use of Weapons label has always been a reliable source of analogue-heavy left of centre deep house, with each split EP, featuring tracks from a variety of like-minded producers, featuring a range of must-have nuggets. This expansive sixth release, with eight tracks spread across two slabs of wax, is no different. DSO’s beautiful and surprisingly fragile “Mendoza” leads the way, with 7 Citizens calming, alien house groover “Fatum” close behind. Arguably best of all, though, is Other Worlds’ “Coldname ELD”, a sparse and bassy concoction blessed with some brilliant, Head High style pianos. It is, though, all good, with further impressive contributions from the Detroit-included Haku.

Other Worlds – Live From The Memory Warehouse [BOOMCHIK002]

BoomChik is back with a 2nd release  featuring Si Murray with his Other Worlds project. Solid basses and rattling percussion fuel an E.P. that gurgles with bright Detroitesque finesse and variety that shifts between large almost basic channel feelings, to glitteringly precise house music. A five track release, full of floating pads and spacious reverbs take you directly to other worlds as lush strings and tight percussion patterns do exactly what they intend and trip you back to memories of warehouse days. Murrayʼs extremely tight production and musicality give this an edge that though reminiscent of the tones and feel of days gone by, has itʼs feet firmly planted in the here and now.

Use of Weapons 5 lands noisily in your back yard with five house marauders hotter than Salma Hayek eating a hot apple pie. Five different artists bring the bacon: label heads Deep Space Orchestra remixing themselves, ex-Cosmic Boogie overlord Asok, Perseus Traxx, Other Worlds and Wet Play executive board member Ruf Dug.

Scott Fraser / Other Worlds – Horn Wax Three [HWTHREE]

With delays on Tusk Wax Eight, the label turn to their Horn Wax sister imprint for the next Wax hit. On side A we get Scott Fraser’s “Space & Tapes”, another massive track from this producer who has already impressed with his releases on World Unknown and Weatherall’s Bird Scarer imprint. Rooted in a Detroit / Chicago sound, “Space & Tapes” is a raw analogue techno epic that retains interest throughout. This has been a staple of Mr Tusk Wax’s DJ sets for the last two months, and is a serious dancefloor weapon. Offering something deeper we have Other Worlds’ “Dystope” on the B-side, a slowly building electronic house / techno track that morphs with acid squelches and arpeggiated synth sparkles.
