Ethereal Beat – Underboard [THANKYOU029]

A hard one to put in a box when it comes to genre, floating somewhere between italo and synth pop, originally released in Switzerland in 1985. “Underboard” is very cool paced downtempo number that builds up with layers of subtle percussion lusciously adorned by some heavy saxy reedsmanship and mysterious vocal accents with no real message – 100% chill o’clock served on ice. “Cedar Of Lebanon” picks up the tempo a notch, once again setting the scene for the reeds to shine as the catchy melody is presented, beautiful 80’s instrumentalism from a golden age, clearly not made in Ableton. B side features a respectful DJ tool style remix by Anatolian Weapons.

VA – Amphibious Carbine [SMI-008]

The Sound Migration label takes another trip back in to the CATT articles to explore the proto-trance and early bleep techno sound they were pushing from 1988-1991. Another five essential gems from the modestly sized catalogue get an airing here, kicking off with Confidential’s haunting ‘Amphibious Carbine’ followed by the boxy pressure of Exocet’s ‘Nitrogen’. This is astounding stuff throughout, not least the freak-zone trip of Holy Ghost’s ‘Walking On Air’, which sounds like the common denominator between Ibiza and Goa in their nascent days as party destinations. Don’t sleep on the clattering funk of Exocet’s ‘Overdose’ either, a seriously snappy groover with all kinds of oddball sampling going on.

Leo Mas & Sergio Portaluri – Lipstick Traces [SMR019]

A time capsule from the golden age of Balearic history opened for the first time in 3 decades. Ibiza legends Leo Mas and Sergio Portaluri generously give Sound Metaphors the honor of releasing historical material from a special time and place. Originally produced in 1993 these tracks have been sitting in DAT tapes waiting for an opportunity to tell us a dancefloor story from a golden era where there were no smart phones or social media. Furthermore, the cherry on top, comes with none other than Apiento (Paul from Testpressing) gracefully remixing “Vogue Mars” into a breakbeat DJ tool bound to inspire new energy levels on the dancefloor.

Sea Of Disillusions – Part III [BLESSYOU018]

Youcef Debbihi continues to impress and surprise after already his 3rd volume as Sea of Disillusions, output on Sound Metaphors. This 4 tracker extends what was already started and established in the previous volumes, expanding his studio excellence into more break beat oriented directions, either at high speed in the form of almost Drum’n’Bass with “K2” or slowed down as a more trip-hop tempo with “Break Whale”. B-side slows down to upper 90BPM range of driving rhythm under atmospheric dubby hints of humidity “5deF”, and, finalizing with a beatless Ambient mix of “Loon River” which sounds like the slow motion intro to an epic trance anthem that never fully takes off, setting the stage for something heavy to be mixed in. Downtempo, triphop, tribal, dubbed out atmospheric nuances, grandly produced.

Confidential – Psychopath / Synergy [SMI005]

Sound Metaphors and Transmigration take another dig at the CATT Records catalogue with another EP comprised of two cuts that have been part of the secret weapon arsenals of many seasoned DJs and collectors. A side investigates what might come across as a British response to the Belgian New Beat contingent that had been brewing for a while at the time, serious bass lines and synthetic Gregorian chants echoed over solid four on the floor action. B side unfolds the rhythm in half beat with a breaky electro/freestyle indulgence with Led Zeppelin samples unexpectedly sprinkled about.

Anatolian Weapons – Sound Metaphors Remixed Pt. II [BLESSYOU016]

Weaponize your DJ record bag again with fresh ammo from the Greek studio machine, Aggelos Baltas does it again with another volume of remixes to the Sound Metaphors re-issue catalogues, an invigorating contemporary club touch to a wide range of dance floor material that was originally produced in the early 90s and late 80s. A new patina layer formed by the aging acid baths and chemical reactions of the experienced studio magician. Aggelos’ signature atmospheric grandiosity and big room sound once again delivered with precision and high efficiency for the caring modern dancefloor.

Patrizia Pellegrino – Musica Spaziale [MISSYOU026]

An Italian disco classic produced by one of Italy’s top disco pop entrepreneurs – Constantino Paolini – featuring the voice of Vesuvian actress and TV personality Patrizia Pellegrino. “Musica Spaziale” is a fast paced synthy disco number adorned with signorina Pellegrino’s silky smooth vocals, featuring lusty cosmic nuanced lyrics that arguably invite the listener to some form of astral bliss in the company of the blond starlet. A classic amongst collectors and specialists of the genre, made available to your record collections once again without having to sell any of your kidneys. In addition, also an extended edit, that patiently slows down the tempo but also extends this cosmic climax on the dancefloor in a manner respectful to the original masterpiece, allowing the dancers to savor every moment of this celestial voyage without all the rush of the 7″ version . Flip it and things get propelled in direction to some other acidic orbits with DJ Asshole’s tripped out downtempo 8′ intervention.

Trent – Rosco Disco [BLESSYOU014]

Luca Trentini aka Trent is back on BLESSYOU with another EP. Three new tracks further deepening his explorations in masterful sample collages borrowing heavy percussive elements from his refined library of sounds juxtaposed with patterns of wild vocals, trippy sound effects and offset sax solos. Taking you to unforeseeable places with this rhythmic whirlwind of force much in tune with the artwork featuring a 17th century wind chart for aiding sailors in nautical explorations.

Anti-Time – Dream Baby / Free Recipe [SMR016]

The original Berlin dance floor trouble makers from the early 90s, Saba Komossa and Gabi Delgado’s joint project Anti-Time was a powerful soundtrack to Berlin’s nightlife after the wall came down. Merging their naive curiosity with access to latest studio equipment guided by an unmatchable instinct for what works on a dancefloor, Gabi and Saba created a sound so classic and unmistakably their own that still today it refreshes the ears. For many an established masterpiece, for others a time capsule love message from over 3 decades ago, but for everyone it’s an essential piece of European club scene history. This album combines both of the known Anti-Time releases from 1990 and 1991 into one release.

Delkom – Futur Ultra [SMR013]

Delkom’s only known previously released album. Originally released in 1990 by the wonder duo consisting of Saba Komossa and Gabi Delgado. The album is released as a continuous mix with each track delineated on the grooves. Imagine Berlin in 1990, the wall is about to come down, no social media, no CDJs, new drugs are being standardized and this is the soundtrack to your night out in this debaucherous capital, exploding with energies that anthropology PhD students still haven’t been able to fully describe. The entire record sounds like a dub mix that almost wasn’t allowed to be released by the record label, unorthodox in its methods, too experimental for most studios yet highly effective on the best of dancefloors. Sexually charged lyrics, driving percussive rawness over heftily synthesized bass lines, all boxes are checked for total club mayhem. Pioneers in their own right, clearly marking their territory in Berlin dancefloor culture from its early post reunification days. Powerfully tasteful and unique sounds from a golden age.

Danton’s Voice – Danton’s Voice Selected Works ’89 [SMI001]

Although his released body of work is relatively small, Dirk De Saever’s EPs come with a rather unique aesthetic in sound. Once New Beat was established and exploded as a dancefloor craze in Europe, there seems to have been a bit of a flood of attempts at making “a hit” within the style, filter through most of that and you’ll eventually land on Dirk’s mini catalogue of top grade Belgian New Beat. This 12” is a compilation of De Saever’s 3 EPs combined in one, featuring original mixes on the A-side and instrumentals on the B-side.
