Hipodrome Podcast 003 – Das Komitee

For the third Hipodrome podcast we are proud to present Das Komitee. He was part of Exposed Audio and Elektro.Casnice and is one of Romania’s most underground djs. His sets are always very eclectic and unpredictable, playing a mixture of electro, italo disco, acid house and techno and never following the hype. He crafted for us a mix melting new with old, deep with acid, house with italo in his own characteristic style.

Please describe your mix. What’s the idea behind it? How, when, where it was done and what should we expect?

I think it`s a selection of tracks, some very obscure and old, some new, where I`ve tried, in the little (unfortunately) time I could dedicate to this little project, to capture the weird and wonderful, bad and ugly gems of electronic music, the way I understand it and love it. I think there`s a bit of everything in this selection, and that`s the way it goes for me. So basically it`s a little insight into my world of electronic music. Anyway, to fully answer your questions and to give you the full picture, sad as it may be, the “mix” was done on my doggy equipment (the mixer might have died) late at night, after a hard day at work, wearing nothing but underwear. I was accompanied by some rather nice beers. So expect very cheap, dirty action.

When did you start playing music and why did you chose Das Komitee as dj name?

I started playing music from records about 6 years ago and I can`t recall what Das Komitee stands for. Probably studying
in a German school left some scars.

You are an uncompromising dj and producer. How did you and your music style evolved since you had started?

I started being aware of electronic music quite a long time ago. It was a time of restricted access, so looking back I have pretty much enjoyed everything over the years. A lot of crap as well, but there were defining twists and turns.
Elektro.casnice was one of them. The Model providing music from what seemed to be another world, Masstyk and his very  special views and knowledge, and of course Mihai Popoviciu with whom I explored and discovered that wonderful process of creating ridiculous music, the Cbs, the IFM all the people and places and many more. But I have my own well established filters now. And i`m proud and happy about it.

Do you have some favorite djs/producers and how did they influence you?

I do have my very own favs like Mick Wills, I-f, Loud-E, Traxx but there`s an ongoing search, struggle to find the very best. I have to admit that Mick blew me away time after time so he did influence me. It`s comforting to know there`s people who are dedicated to bringing out the best in the music that I enjoy.

You are a vinyl junkie, collecting records and playing only wax. What do you think about the new generation of digital djs playing only laptops and CDs? What to you think is going to happen to vinyl?

I love vinyl. Yes i do. Vinyl is here to stay, I say. But so are the others. There shouldn`t be any conflicts on this issue. Music is what really matters. So anything goes if there`s substance in the music.

You are living now in the UK. What do you think about the global electronic music scene? Also, can you make a comparison between the Romania and UK scenes?

I shouldn`t be someone to judge because I`m biased. It seems loads of people are enjoying certain, fashionable trends these days, so everything must be fine from this perspective. But in fairness to the critics of today`s trends, yes I too feel that there`s way, way too much shit being released for no good reason. Just go online and you`ll see. It is the same everywhere I presume. The scene in the Uk seems much larger than the one in Romania, but then again there`s only a handful of people who stand for what I like. Same shit, different place .

You had some tracks released on some Romanian compilations 4-5 years ago. Are you still producing music? If not why did you stopped?

I still jam around occasionally, but there`s not much more to it. I do it for my very private entertainment.

What do you listen to besides electronic music?

Nothing else really.

What do you do in your free time? Do you have some unusual hobbies?

I love cooking, my only other sin besides record collecting.

People are waiting for you in Sibiu. When are you going to visit us again?

The wait is nearly over.I`ll be back.
