John T. Gast – Overseer [APRON025]

“Overseer” finds the illusive John T. Gast align with FunkinEven’s Apron label for a sharp, club-ready one-sided 12″. Gast’s appearance on Apron sees him fully engaging in techno forms on his own terms. Wasting little time to kick in, “Overseer” sees a coldly delivered spoken word vocal uttered amidst a cacophony of drum machine hits and synth-shaped drama.

Shanti Celeste / Funkineven – SSS [APRON020]

In recent times, Bristol’s Shanti Celeste has proved more than adept at blending tough, body-popping electro beats with picturesque electronics and luscious, eyes-closed melodies. She’s at it again here, following up two excellent outings on Future Times with the brilliant “SSS”. Expect just the right blend of tactile, eyes-closed melodiousness, snappy drum machine work, and a fluid bassline that subtly doffs a cap to Syclops’ “Where’s Jason’s K”. Apron boss Funkineven offers his own interpretation on the flip, bringing it closer to early 808 State territory, while adding some neat, boogie-influenced synth touches and saucer-eyed piano flourishes.

Greg Beato – When Monkeys Attack [APRON019]

Greg Beato returns to Funkineven’s Apron imprin, serving up three more chunks of woozy machine music. Beato sets the tone on “When Monkeys Attack”, which expertly fuses booming bass, fizzing drum machine hits and dreamy, hypnotic synthesizer motifs. There’s a hazier deep house feel to “El Dinero Falla”, which despite its’ inherent beauty is also notably tough and more than a little wonky. Another excellent outing closes with the clanking drum machine cowbells, Syclops-goes-rave riffs and furious percussion programming of the more techno-leaning “Sadati”.

Funkineven feat Jay Daniel – Discipline / Abyss [APRON013]

The ever increasing understanding between Apron and Wild Oats and the many artists affiliated with both labels continues to bear fruit for those out there that like their house music raw and rugged. The idea alone of young Detroit talent Jay Daniel getting behind the buttons with suave Stevie Funkineven should set the pulses racing and both “Discipline” and “Abyss” will leave you craving more from this partnership. There’s an effortless glide to “Discipline” as Jay and Funk’ keep the drums to a minimal yet bugged out line of kicks, leaving it to those killer keys and thick set chords to hit you in the gut and the hips. On the flip, “Abyss” finds the duo opting for a more pared back, abstract production where rhythm is kept to a minimum as the space is filled with tweaked out motifs that sound like a paranoia filled John Carpenter.

Greg Beato – Apron EP [APRON005]

FunkinEven’s Apron imprint next release will be the first not to come from FunkinEven himself, and will be sourced instead from 19 year-old Miami producer Greg Beato. “Respect The 78″ pairs crunchy kicks with a noisily filtered arpeggio, “Let Em Know” delivers some smudgy yet powerful deep house, while “3″ finishes off with an abstract techno jam with all the rough sound of a badly scratched Chicago house 12″.

Dope new 12″  from Funkinevil produced with Kyle Hall. The two tracks on it make for a stylistic about-turn from the TV theme funk of the last Apron release Chips & Sweets, “Dracula” is the kind of stuttering 303 acid jam FunkinEven is an expert of, reminiscent of the brilliant “Roland’s Jam”, while “Cha!” is a loose-limbed slice of proto-techno which goes heavy on the unfiltered analogue bass, driven forward with lolloping drum machine beats.
