Kelpe – Monte Verita [DBADUB002]

Kelpe makes his first outing on Don’t Be Afraid as part of their coveted DBA DUBS series. Monte Verit sees the London based beat veteran at his housiest (sic) yet. The track sports a low slung four to the floor and a deadly analogue funk bassline. Kevin Reynolds improvises on the original with a more upbeat outsider house groove and an acid line guaranteed to bring the dancefloor to its knees.

On this release we have tracks from 48v Spargel Brothers, Club Paranoia, Slazenger’s People and Freeman.

The tenth release on Don’t Be Afraid is coming from Alis. Alis is the new project from Italo-Bulgarian Londoner, Sabina Plamenova. Azimuth EP showcases this producer’s fresh take on electronic music across a range of tempos. The influence of acid house on Alis’s music, and the influence of cities like Detroit and Chicago, are pronounced. In addition D’Marc Cantu remixes the EP’s most dancefloor-friendly track, Azimuth, lending it a deeper and more brooding edge.

Claws For? – Profumo [DUB001]

Profumo is the first release in the new Don’t Be Afraid 10″ series entitled DBA DUBS. This series is about teaming a London house dub with a ‘techno-related’ dancefloor remix. The first release comes from Claws For? ,with a remix from Gosub. Hearing is believing as far as the original goes, a soulful and expressive analogue house cut that will work in both day time and night time sets this summer. Gosub’s remix is a sleazy, greasy Miami electronic funk work out which sweats and oozes authentic East Coast vibe.

Mr. Beatnick – Sun Goddess EP [DBA008]

Taking inspiration from classic rare groove Boogie and Detroit House, the dangerously underrated London tunesmith drops his most impressive 12″ to date. Mr. Beatnick delivers dusted Rhodes and warmest, Theo P-esque strings and bassline on ‘Sun Goddess’, beside the Kassem Mosse-gone-Balearic vibes of ‘Beneath The Reef’. Flipside he’s in a friskier mood with the tight Boogie-Tech shimmy of ‘Shifting Sands’, primed to work it from Panorama Bar to Plastic People, while ‘Savoir Faire’ tips out on classic-sounding Gallic deep disco vibe.

Photonz – Love Spectre EP [DBA007]

New release from Photonz on Don’t Be Afraid imprint. “Spectre” is a forward thinking house track with a jaded xylophone hooks and cold as ice groove. “Wall” is a slice of trademark Photonz Portuguese acid, an infinite groove that builds and builds. “Dokos” is a more downbeat track, with old school house sound of Chicago and Detroit. “Prometheus” catches the pair at their most experimental, upping the tempo and unleashing an ambitious techno juke roller.

Semtek – Pizza EP [DBA006]

Pizza is the 6th release on Don’t Be Afraid. The first track on the 12”, “Pizza” combines disco, techno and acid house elements on a broken funky base. “Goons” is a mean little track with caper-like 303s and a bumping trumpet bassline, backed by sweet drum machine beats. DJ 3000 takes the fundamentals of the original and replaces them with some of his own locally sourced Detroit ingredients, including a euphoric rhodes and some rich pads.

Semtek – West Acyd Shelter EP [DBA004]

The fourth release on Don’t Be Afraid “West Acyd Shelter” takes one of the most important jazz funk records of the 1970’s as its starting point. Semtek rebuilds the legendary hook from scratch over a disorienting range of acid, broken and techno accoutrements leaving a tweaked out bassline stepper. Photonz bring their unique style to the proceedings with an “I can’t believe it’s not garage” take on Semtek’s beat. The B-side “East Acyd Shelter” is a sparse analogue workout.
