Paranoid London collaborate with Glaswegian band Water Machine for an acidic two tracker. The London-based duo of Quinn Whalley and Gerardo Delgado are known for their stripped back acid house sound and ‘Decimated Driver’ fits the agenda once again. The track utilizes catchy distorted synth lines to drive the groove, carefully placed on top of a pounding and infectious 303 bassline. Throw in some chants of “AN – TI – CI – PA – TION” by Water Machine and they have managed to craft a perfect dancefloor filler. The second side of the record is a dub version of the track, making it all the more broody and moody.

Paranoid London, the electronic band of Gerardo Delgado and Quinn Whalley, has become synonymous with stripping acid house back down to its basics, rescuing the sound from smiley faces, rave, and sugary excess while paying respects to its gay, black, American roots. Performing mainly live with hardware only, often with vocal guests, as well as unique hybrid DJ sets, the duo has established a tongue in cheek, grumpy punk sound and attitude without taking it too seriously. Their new long-player “Arseholes, Liars, and Electronic Pioneers” refers to the cavalcade of c***s we find ourselves surrounded by. Our only respite being the joy that musical geniuses bring. As expected, PL has recruited a bunch of special guests on vocals including Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, US house veteran Monica “DJ Genesis” Lockett, the novo-New Romantic/gothic, Jennifer Touch, and Joe Love, from Fat Dog, Brixton’s current ones-to-watch. As well, previous collaborators Josh Caffe and Mutado Pintado return for new recordings.

When it comes to jackin’ Chicago style acid house revivalism, few can hold a candle to Paranoid London. As this long-awaited second album proves, the duo is the undisputed masters of sweaty, TB-303 driven jack-tracks and – as recent single ”(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games” and LP opener ”Starting Fights” prove – classic-sounding vocal cuts that recall the glory years of Fingers, Inc in the mid-to-late 1980s. Interestingly, ”PL” boasts far more collaborations than we’ve seen from Paranoid London before, including a string of ragged club cuts blessed with evocative spoken word vocals, a thrusting acid throb-job with lead vocals by Simon Topping and a suitably twisted, machine-driven hook up with Arthur Baker and Alan Vega (the raw and weighty ”Angel Of Hell”).

The mysterious, no-holds-barred combo Paranoid London has decided to put out a double album containing much of their previously released material, alongside a smattering of previously unheard cuts (including a collaboration with Detroit legend DJ Genesis). The hard-to-find classics still sparkle – check the brilliantly sparse-but-heavy “Paris Dub 1” (with regular vocalist Paris Brightledge) and ragged “Transmission 5” (featuring a killer spoken vocal from Mutado Pintado) – while the new cuts are thankfully up to similarly high standard. Here is some more repetitive, machine bass music for DJs to play loud & dancers to freak to.
