Hieroglyphic Being – The Disco’s Of Imhotep [TCLR015]

Seriously strong Jamal Moss LP under his Hieroglyphic Being moniker. “The Disco’s Of Imhotep is about creating Frequencies and Vibrations for the Listener that are conducive for him or her to Heal The Mind and Body and Enrich the Soul by creating Hemi-Synced Harmonies and music that contains embedded Binaural Beats. We have been made to believe that electronic sounds are just for Movement, Enlightenment, Primal Afflictions and Entertainment purposes, but it’s much more… It’s Sound Healing, but the ancestors would call it Frequency Medicine. Medicine is Healing and this project is dedicated to one of Earth’s first Healers: High Priest Imhotep. The One who comes in Peace, is with Peace.”

Hieroglyphic Being & The Configurative Or Modular Me Trio – Cosmic Beebop [MATH088]

Jamal Moss doesn’t mess around. The legendary Chicagoan is impressively prolific, and seemingly able to knock out a new album or double EP in a matter of days, rather than weeks or months. Cosmic Bebop is his latest set of no-nonsense jack tracks; an eight-track assault on the senses forged from dusty old drum machines, occasional blasts of distant melody, and all manner of mind-altering special effects. It’s pretty much what you’d expect from Moss, and for the most part sits in the folder marked “box jams”. It’s a proper past perspective of works (1996-2014) from Jamal Moss of obscure experimental releases of unique analog sounds reissued other his other popular known alias.

Africans with Mainframes – K.M.T. [SJRD333]

Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns this time under the alias Africans with Mainframes. With fellow Chicagoan Noleian Reusse they have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now. The K.M.T. LP is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental electronic music today.

Prins Thomas – D (Hieroglyphic Being Remixes) [STS27412]

Given the sprawl and epic that was the recent Principe Del Norte album from Prins Thomas, it is no surprise Smalltown Supersound have opted to think big for this subsequent remix 12″ series. Hieroglyphic Being kicks matters off with a pair of remixes of “D”, whose original 14 minutes made for one of the highlights of the album. In the hands of Jamal Moss, the track doesn’t transform into the corrosive monster you might expect though little of the original remains intact. The accompanying Beat Rework buries PT’s original krauty melodics deep below a killer barrage of drums and is our favourite of the two HB versions.

Hieroglyphic Being & J.I.T.U. Ahn-Sahm-Buhl – We Are Not The First [RVNGNL033]

For those who maintain the more mutable dance music is, the deeper its impact on human evolution, RVNG Intl. presents ‘We Are Not The First’, an epic conducted and deconstructed by Chicago artist Hieroglyphic Being and the JITU Ahn-Sahm-Bul. ‘We Are Not The First’ combines the musical forces of Marshall Allen, Daniel Carter, Greg Fox, Shelley Hirsch, Shahzad Ismaily, Elliott Levin, Jamal Moss, Rafael Sanchez, and Ben Vida in deep dialogue with each other and humans’ hidden sonic history. Tracked as different personale patterns over a week of studio sessions in Brooklyn, said syntax translates into mesmerizing sound forms as the ensemble excavates sonic folklore and ancient music, employing spiritual-jazz’s welfare and health as an agency for balance. An album with an active brain, ‘We Are Not The First’ aspires to reprogram the mind, to transcend our expectations through bugged-out percussion, modular mayhem, flurries of free improvisation, and voices carrying through the air. Hieroglyphic Being & JITU Ahn-Sahm-Bul develop consciousness from primordial ooze. As in listening, the ooze intones an echo of our deep past, rendering the present ever focused. ‘We Are Not The First’ is an 11-part epic and each track is a movement therein that testifies: an ensemble’s vitality lives in its collectivity. When we ask the ooze, the ooze articulates: ‘We Are Not The First’.

Jamal Moss ‎- 4 This Is My Gherkin Life Vol. 3 [GHERKINCD003]

While Larry Heard only ever produced two 12″ singles under the Gherkin Jerks alias, the ragged acid tracks featured in those EPs have been hugely influential. Certainly, they made a lasting impression on Jamal Moss, who earlier this year decided to record a bunch of tracks inspired by Heard’s infamous blend of rugged drum machine rhythms, twisted acid lines, and heart-aching deep house touches. 4 This Is My Gherkin Life Volume 3 continues where installments one and two left off, delivering eight more killer machine jams which temper Moss’s usual balls-out approach to Chicagoan acid with a few melancholic, melodious touches. The result is another impressive set of analogue box jams, from the bass-heavy bounce of the intoxicating “Track 8”, to the spacey electronics and Detroit drums of “Track 5”.

Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio – Keep Your Mind Open [BDN007]

The Bedouin imprint continues on with its quest for the sublime and exotic in modern techno and house music. Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio delivers more of his signature dusty lo fi electronics but gets an industrial tinged stomp on with “Keep Your Mind Open” and it’s absolutely killer. On the flip is “That Is The Name Of The African God” which is an analogue jam that sounds more like the Hieroglyphic Being we know.

Jamal Moss (aka I.B.M. – Insane Black Man) is a lost warrior of sonic truth. Digging through shoe boxes of cassettes, video tapes, and mini discs, we have collected the secret tapes of one Insane Black Man. This is an archive of the impetus of his genius, containing perhaps the holy grail of all Jamal Moss tunes The Land of Rape and Honey and Tribal Retribution. Artists on labels like LIES are still searching for these originals. We have taken them from their dusty and damaged condition and painfully & meticulously restored them. Now we can present these fragile raw and pure visions with the greatest level of quality. Finally the full impact of these ideas can be felt.
