ERP’s ‘Telenovela’ I first to cast off into the cosmos with solar winds gently blowing over kinetic drums and far-sighted celestial pads. MOY brings some wonky acid turbulence to the trip on ‘Pale Nimbus’ and Juno favourite Carl Finlow gets a little grubby with his gloopy, sordid electro wobbler ‘Woven’. Another titan of the scene, Radioactive Man, comes through with a winky gem that harks back to Two Lone Swordsmen on ‘Space Junk’, with many other essentials from the likes of Abduction, Domenic Cappello, DMX Crew, FASME, Reptant and Transparent Sound making this utterly essential.

Original Chicago house music hero Ron Hardy used to make and break tracks with ease. Decades on, we’re still getting treated to them with this ongoing series and the latest opens up with a familiar sound. ‘Love’ is fairly stripped of its original vocals and is a casuistic, textured and intense electronic disco cut for peak times. ‘The Night’ slows down with some freaky vocals and heavy dub disco drums then ‘1-5-1’ brings some jacked up acid house with monstrous 303 lines ripping up the groove and ice cold hi-hats keeping time. ‘The Bass’ is a raw drum track with moody Windy City vocals and dark energy.
Slow Motion affiliate Radondo returns to the “A UFO” free edit series with his high-octane rework of Mac Jr.’s “Elephant Song.” The vibrant energy of the original track is enhanced by Radondo’s signature percussive instrumentation and metallic flair. Eduardo de la Calle and DJ Surgeles meet Fabio Giachino, David Strike, and Manu Melero Amaya in Telmaco Xavier Quintet, a project where jazz and electronics engage in a real-time exchange rather than a controlled experiment. “Time Pawn” is built on interaction – musicians and machines reacting to each other, shifting between structure and instinct. Eduardo and Surgeles don’t frame jazz within an electronic grid, nor do they treat electronic textures as a decorative layer. Instead, they allow both elements to retain their full character, pushing and pulling in ways that never settle into easy resolutions. Fabio Giachino’s piano moves freely, alternately threading through and cutting across the pulse. David Strike and Manu Melero Amaya bring movement that resists the obvious, allowing groove to exist without being locked in place. The result isn’t about merging styles but letting them exist in the same space–sometimes in harmony, sometimes in friction, always in motion.
A classy new Format release, 30 years after the previous one. Three genre defying club grooves continuing where #3 left of.
