Circadian Rhythms – Basic Moves 20 LP [BM020]

Basic Moves is rounding off their release series with BM20, a final double 12’’ by one of the major figures from the Belgian underground: Circadian Rhythms also known as Dj Deg. BM20 is a sonic witness of Deg’s first musical encounters with his machines, revealing a withdrawn selection of six bedroom patchwork tracks produced between the years of ‘93 & ’99, a time without access to the internet or user manuals to help you solve the riddles of technology. Though only at the very beginning of his creative process, Deg’s unique personality is nevertheless already clearly identifiable: blending techno with jazz, where the sharp edges of 16-step drum-sequences are smudged and bent in different directions.

Perseus Traxx – In the Shadow of Birkby Fell [GTD026]

For his second outing on Gated, Perseus Traxx expands on tracks that debuted during a live set in 2021. The A-side kicks things off in typically deep bass-led style, with the acidic breaky Sheet 96, followed by the title track In the Shadow of Birkby Fell, which takes things a tad tougher. Flipping to the B, Ancestral Technologies kicks out the most up-tempo of the four tracks, while The Edge of Time closes the EP with a warped, lo-fi groover for the early hours that brings back a touch of the breaks.

VA – Back Up Dos: Mexican Tecno Pop 1982-1989 LP [DE-323]

Dark Entries returns to Mexico with Back Up Dos: Mexican Tecno Pop 1982-1989. Following 2021’s Back Up compilation, Back Up Dos delivers 10 more tracks of synth-pop and New Beat, 7 of which have never before appeared on vinyl. From mutant drum machine beats to irresistible synthesizer hooks, fans of the fringes of the 80s will find songs to stir their cold, dark hearts. But Back Up Dos does more than mine retro kitsch; it documents the development of a rich DIY music scene that is still underexplored. As affordable samplers and digital synths spread throughout the decade, post-punk and new wave gave way to more aggressive EBM and cyberpunk sounds. The scene also developed in opposition to the political climate of the times: the rise of the drug cartels and a reactionary turn in national politics. Using home recording techniques, these bands took cues from the electronic wizardry of the Human League and Wax Trax Records while reflecting the vibrant and chaotic Mexican cultural landscape of the era. On Back Up Dos, impeccable pop anthems from Casino Shanghai and Los Agentes Secretos sit alongside gnarled obscurities from Ford Proco and María Bonita, showcasing a decade of sly deviance and enthusiastic experimentation. Back Up Dos compiles synthetic music produced in Mexico at the crossroads from Tecno Pop to Post-Industrial, nourished by culture shock and stories of dystopian worlds.

Jiro Inagaki & Soul Media – Funky Stuff [HMJY211]

2024 pressing of a Japanese Jazz-Funk classic. Little is documented about the creators of 1975’s ‘Funky Stuff’. Jiro Inagaki and his band’s legacy is almost entirely musical, devoid of the personal details that often accompany jazz musicians. To understand this album, it must be placed within its cultural context. Japan’s jazz scene, one of the largest per capita, has faced accusations of imitation and unoriginality. However, Inagaki’s work, particularly in the late ’60s and early ’70s fusion era, defies these stereotypes. Inagaki’s genre-blending began with 1970’s Head Rock, less experimental than Bitches Brew but equally dynamic. By 1975, Inagaki had embraced funk, culminating in Funky Stuff. The album, laden with rich bass-lines, wah-wah pedals, and layered percussion, opens with the danceable ‘Painted Paradise’. Pianist Hiromasa Suzuki, who wrote most tracks, shines, especially on the melancholic ‘Breeze’ and the bossa-nova ‘Gentle Wave’. Covers like Kool & The Gang’s ‘Funky Stuff’ and Wayne Henderson’s ‘Scratch’ are highlights. Funky Stuff joyously engages with funk’s rhythms, making it a delightful hidden gem.

He does so in collaboration with Hiromasa Suzuki, a prominent name in Japanese jazz, and seasoned session musicians who add their own spice. Millsart – Powerland [AX120]

The 6th chapter in the Axis Expressionist Series, curated by Millsart, an alias of Jeff Mills, of his most eclectic and transcendent compositions that derive from his Every Dog Has Its Day project as well as new unreleased works. ”The relationship between our star, the source that gives us life and the land we occupy during this transcendental process is one of sensitivity and compassion. Topography and rock settlements are positioned as conductive posts of energy. An energy line wrapping around a planet that straddles between the past, the present and the future. And on this land, exists an engineered string of energy called the 37th Parallel. Time Travel, multi-dimensional activity, healing, spiritual transition and rejuvenations in the supernatural respect and other powers we’ve yet to discover and realize.”

Beat machine freak duo Bill Converse and Patricia (Max Ravitz) present 380/750, a new EP on Acid Test that blends the two producers’ singular styles to form an emotive “introspection on the dance floor” experience across 4 tracks. Recorded at Ravitz’s Brooklyn studio over the course of two days, 380/750 features raw, no-multitrack, no-edit live recordings that showcase the duo’s intuition for expressive rhythm tracks.
