Retrograde Youth – Phormix Podcast #91

The 1st document in a 2 part project from D’Marc Cantu. Drops summer 2017 on Nation’s, sublabel Kode. Exemplary productions from the early years. Nation are greatly honored and excited to release and present these timeless gems of Jakbeat on a 1-time very limited pressing.

A great pairing here as the rugged basslines, emotional melodies, and vintage percussion of Perseus Traxx seem right at home on the Love Notes stabel, who seem to be taking a quick break from showcasing artists from their homebase of Brooklyn, as they have on their last 4 records. More Songs About Girls is a cohesive EP of 4 original tracks and neither fans of this artist nor fans of this label will be disappointed.

Amsterdam-based duo Wanderwelle return to Silent Season for their debut album which is inspired by the mysterious pagan tribes that once roamed across the European woodlands. ‘Lost in a Sea of Trees’ tells the tale of a lone traveller who enters a dark, ancient forest. Lured deep into the woods by something not of this world as he enters uncharted grounds. Step by step his journey is getting darker as he encounters strange phenomena and beings among the trees.

The Passport To Paradise gang are in fine form as they serve up four more tripped-out disco edits for the globally-minded savant. We take sail with the excellent ‘Thru Wit’ Waitin”, a beefed-up guitar chugger reminiscent of 70’s AOR in its steady percussive work and misty sax solo. It’s the guitar line that really shines here, lifting the tune into funk transcendence in the bridge. ‘Anybody Out There’ reaches out to the disco trippers with its northern Italian cosmic kitsch feel: starry-eyed synth pads float above reverb-soaked guitar musings and playful French vocal samples. A particular highlight. On the flip, Passport To Paradise take things south with a soulful West African shuffler guaranteed to elicit some arresting footwork. The EP leaves us with resounding vibrations from the Far East: ‘JP Wave’ explores ethereal planes, building up a dense rhythmic fabric punctuated by bass stabs and ornamental chimes. This is a clever bunch of edits for the more discerning selectors and enthusiasts out there- act fast.

Parisian party starters Les Yeux Orange continue to develop their Good Plus body of work with three more obscure digs. A predominant Afro theme presides throughout as we’re massaged by the kwaito smoothness of “Avidiyo” where synth marimbas ignite instant Balearic feels, Yanga Mbiwaa struts with much more of direct Nigerian disco funk feel with its big sing-along chorus and strong sense of drive. Finally “Autoradio” provides a more contemporary almost Italo-like take on Afrofunk with some expert trippiness buried deep in the synths and arrangement.

Official remastered reissue of the italo-disco classic song: Gimme Love, a tribute for the legendary Cellophane Club in Rimini active during 80s. This limited edition release contains the original long version on the A side plus the ”Italian Version” on the B side.

Science Fiction shifted from their early deep territories of house to the current broken beats of electro, keeping the characteristic classic analogue warmth. This EP is made by various artists, and it comes under the signature of an obsessive majestic presence of the 808 beat, that sounds like an accidental tribute to the creator of this drum machine, founder of Roland Corporation, that has died on april the 1st as a fool that changed the way to make music since early 80es. Tracks are mostly sustained, from synched sequences of Hinode to the final atmospheric obscure modular landscapes of Exterminador, chromed by Ngly distortions in track 02. DJ Nephil on the B side introduces a solid visionary Chicagesque mellow atmosphere.

L&M Is a new label of analog machine jams, featuring 3 powerful cuts of raw live material. All tracks produced by a Surgeon and an anaesthesiologist.

The tightest duo since Batman and Robin is back. Rick Poppa Howard and son Tevo Howard team up once more for an emotional house trip.

South California’s acid maestro SFV ACid is featured on the third release by Third Try Records, the Pettyclubber EP, which includes artwork hand drawn by the artist himself. Five original tracks and one remix that brings together long time friends and collaborators SFV Acid, Suzanne Kraft and Secret Circuit with their first studio collaboration ever committed to wax.

Championing an inimitable groove, The Possé present three club ready tracks on their Season’s Greetings EP, combining the know-how of house with the energy and spontaneity of a live band set up. Recorded at the legendary Citisound and Rec Studios in Sydney, the tracks on KEN004 each deliver different perceptions of the up-tempo house beat they’re quickly becoming known for. The title track is probably the heaviest delivery from the label to date, highlighted by the iconic drip of the TB-303. Cheeky guitar licks and 808 rhythms jump in and out of the tracks on the EP, keeping it fresh on the live tip.

”Attitude” is the first 12” from the forthcoming compilation series “What The F*ck Do You Know About Deephouse”. Tthe compilation will feature a heavy onslaught of producers from around the world along with older productions that were major influences which helped to shape the philosophy of the sound.

The Black Bones boys have more than one trick up their sleeves, as another back-breaking digging session has unearthed some sacred remains, ready for modern scientific re-animation. ‘Sonny’ retools a Highlife classic into a splendidly sun-soaked Summer beauty. On the flip ‘XTC’ takes a more Cosmic route to dancefloor abandon, while ‘Roller’ is a barn-storming Discoid jam that wraps up another damn fine EP.

Sneaker; not just a cool sounding name… Edits as strong, rigorous and mind blowing as his require comfortable footwear. Lavish synth funk leads with a eastern allure on the infectious “Goddess”, “Watumba” is tom tom tamping funk beast that you could imagine every DJ from Harvey to Hell spinning while “Magic Fly” takes us on a slightly less obscure but thrilling orchestral cosmic sojourn. “Do It” rings the final bell with kitsch staccato synth effect and playground vocal calls to action. Tighten up your laces and do the robot.

Gian and Massimiliano Pagliara team up to serve you a sizzling hot Diavolo extra crispy. Hard Swabian Electro gets the delicate Lecce touch with parmigiano sprinkled all over to reach the highest level of piacere.
