Factory Floor return to Phantasy with a new single, ‘Tell Me’. As propulsive and direct as anything the cult UK electronic group has ever released, ‘Tell Me’ continues to perfect the dynamic in the band’s current lineup of Gabe Gurnsey, Nik Colk Void, and Joe Ward, with additional drum tracking by Stephen Morris of New Order. Situated between the sonic promise of enduring indie culture, yet naturally imbued with the band’s relentless forward-thinking ethos. Throughout, Colk Void’s inquisitive vocal guides the listener through an elastic square-wave bass groove that forms the rhythmic backbone to Tell Me, before Gurnsey and Ward’s frenetic drumming breakdown rains with pure abandon, exemplifying the band’s personal alchemy between genre, scenes, human, and machine.

Factory Floor return with their first new material since 2018, joining Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound imprint with a new single, ‘Between You’. Fifteen years since their formation, Factory Floor remain one of the most distinctive acts that the UK’s underground electronic scene has produced, channeling post-industrial, acid, rock and minimal influences into their deeply physical work. Building on a rapturously received performance at the 2024 edition of Mutek Montreal, ‘Between You’ captures the hypnotic, rejuvenated interplay of Gabe Gurnsey and Nik Colk Void, alongside additional percussion from touring member Joe Ward.

Mugwump’s Subfield label introduces its first signings with the Belgian-Italo duo Front De Cadeaux aka DJ Athome & DJ Hugosan. They expertly produced their own brand of “Supreme Rallentato”, which is a fucked-up slo-mo italo, acid, disco, techno and house hybrid that so rightly fits with Subfield’s mission statement of covering subgenres. This full Ep on Subfield features 2 original F2C obscene & dirty slo-mo tracks at their most playful, “Ouvre Ta Bouche” and “Front De Cadeaux Theme” plus the magnificent dub-house of “Killers”. Remixes comes courtesy of Factory Floor’s Gabe Gurnsey (DFA) in a quite brutal bleep-techno mood and Manchester’s nu-balearic kingpin Ruf Dug (Music For Dreams), getting into what he described as a ” 808 snare roll warehouse analog fucked-up version”

MACDONALD FLAK & THE ACK ACK PACK - The Cortina Kidz

Mr.intl have unearthed a lost gem. ‘Cortina Kidz’ is an utterly overlooked part of the tapestry of late 80’s British acid house history. Recorded in a cold water flat on Stoke Newington Road in 1987 and then released as a B-side in 1988, its eccentric spoken word overlay and weird lead vocal made it very unlike the prevailing dance music sound of the time. This is a unique recording whose time has come. That was until Mr.Intl, Andy Butler’s record label, made a chance discovery in 2015. It was a track so good that they pledged to resurrect it with interpretations from Factory Floor and NYC cohorts Juan Maclean & Tim Sweeney.

Factory Floor offer up a substantial distraction while the band put the finishing touches on their debut album, due out on DFA Records in early 2013. Their last single “Two Different Ways” is remixed by two different electronic music leaders. Richard H Kirk, co-founder of both Cabaret Voltaire and Sweet Exorcist, puts his own warped spin on the single, while Perc aka Ali Wells, takes the original and piles on his signature throbbing bass for the main remix. Perc also offers up a ‘Noisy Mix’ taking avant waves of feedback and noise and shaping into something unexpectedly beautiful.

Companion EP to Patrick Walker and Smear’s imminent debut album as Forward Strategy Group, featuring two of its heaviest cuts, one exclusive track and a brace of remixes from Factory Floor. ‘Labour Division’ is a low-slung but shark-eyed warehouse number with shades of Luke Slater’s LB Dub Corps project, while ‘Mandate’ explores darker, more minimal territory, with killer snare edits and scruffily dubbed-out chords, and ‘A Greyed Out Life’ is lush synth dreamscaping a la C2, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and even early Human League. Factory Floor’s remix of ‘Nihil Novi’ is an interesting synthesis of post-DFA dub-disco drum patterns, analogue synth spurts and industrial accenting; better still is the version of the same track by the band’s Nik Colk Void, a compelling, skin-crawling work of beatless and bass-heavy electronic abstraction in the spirit of Suum Cuique, Mika Vainio and TG.
