VA- Volume Two [HHLTD010]

Felix K’s Hidden Hawaii comes correct with this immaculate sophomore volume. Delivered on beautiful hand-stamped green vinyl, it plunges deep into the furthest realms of drum & bass. From the precision fracturisms from Felix and Es Tereo’s “Spartan” to Dave O’s classical jungle homage “The Love Of Jah” via the infectiously funky clicks and whirrs of Muted’s “Empty Valley”, no sonic stone is left unturned as the Hidden Hawaii crew bombard you with their bass-bitten experiments. Pump up the volume.

Arrrgh – Gilga 2 [HHG002/6]

This is the second release and second album for the Gilga series which seems to be proliferating on Felix K’s Hidden Hawaii label. The first LP came from Legowelt, last year’s uber-rare and slept-on Gilga 1, and for all we know Gilga 2 could come from the Dutchman too if we base our findings on the Danny Wolfers-esque track names. Synths and musicality play a big role right across Gilga 2 with dubsteppy drums and other elements effecting tracks like “Reversed Shell” and “These Are My Thoughts”, while there’s a Livity Sound-feel to “Purple Jude”. For something a littler deeper and rhythmic check out “Maschine Series” and “Slow Depression”, while “Harmony Korine (Happy Jungle mix)” ends the LP on a trippy note. Gilga 2 is intriguing machine-made music to say the least.

Gilga – Gilga 1 [HHG001/6]

Hidden Hawaii presents Gilga a new project from Danny Wolfers. All the familiar Legowelt elements are in place, from the haunting warbles on “Deputy’s First Hood Patrol” to the nutty strings and samples of “Dimensions Of An Ancient Bird Race”, but there’s never a sense of repetition between the tracks. Each one stands comfortably on its own, from the summery lilt of “Brookhaven” to the lysergic science-fiction of “Atlantic Acid”.
