Africans with Mainframes – K.M.T. [SJRD333]

Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns this time under the alias Africans with Mainframes. With fellow Chicagoan Noleian Reusse they have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now. The K.M.T. LP is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental electronic music today.

Anopolis – Dimokritou [LP010]

Anopolis are a collective of four Thessaloniki based producers (Dimitris Evagelopoulos aka DimDJ, Drum Machinee, Lowjac, Oldman Talkin’) coming together for their second release on Lower Parts. Three tracks of electro acid tinged techno with some serious drum machine tinkering. Also comes backed with an incredible Hieroglyphic Being remix.

Prins Thomas – D (Hieroglyphic Being Remixes) [STS27412]

Given the sprawl and epic that was the recent Principe Del Norte album from Prins Thomas, it is no surprise Smalltown Supersound have opted to think big for this subsequent remix 12″ series. Hieroglyphic Being kicks matters off with a pair of remixes of “D”, whose original 14 minutes made for one of the highlights of the album. In the hands of Jamal Moss, the track doesn’t transform into the corrosive monster you might expect though little of the original remains intact. The accompanying Beat Rework buries PT’s original krauty melodics deep below a killer barrage of drums and is our favourite of the two HB versions.

Shinoby – Do You Know We Exist? EP [ITW003]

ITW003 MANIFESTO There is an audience to our drama. Like the hero of a dream, he works for us, in our behalf. there is an Strange world that waits and watches. And an Ancient dread of non – existence. ISTHEWAY 003 will be released in the spring and remixed by the legend Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being. He considers himself a child of many. Growing up in 1980s Chicago, he was a child of the city’s loft party heyday, pulled into the club scene by the grooves of Ron Hardy and Derrick Carter and kept there by the manic acid of Adonis and Steve Pointdexter. His key influence, though, is Sun Ra; the Afrofuturist jazz pioneer whose cosmic philosophies have permeated his own production work. For Moss, club space and headspace have merged into one. His releases and the catalog of his label Mathematics Recordings have a cult following worldwide, but it didn’t happen overnight: with a DIY ethic and all-consuming passion, he’s been pounding the streets of Chicago as a foot soldier for House Music since the edge of the early 1990s.

Hieroglyphic Being & J.I.T.U. Ahn-Sahm-Buhl – We Are Not The First [RVNGNL033]

For those who maintain the more mutable dance music is, the deeper its impact on human evolution, RVNG Intl. presents ‘We Are Not The First’, an epic conducted and deconstructed by Chicago artist Hieroglyphic Being and the JITU Ahn-Sahm-Bul. ‘We Are Not The First’ combines the musical forces of Marshall Allen, Daniel Carter, Greg Fox, Shelley Hirsch, Shahzad Ismaily, Elliott Levin, Jamal Moss, Rafael Sanchez, and Ben Vida in deep dialogue with each other and humans’ hidden sonic history. Tracked as different personale patterns over a week of studio sessions in Brooklyn, said syntax translates into mesmerizing sound forms as the ensemble excavates sonic folklore and ancient music, employing spiritual-jazz’s welfare and health as an agency for balance. An album with an active brain, ‘We Are Not The First’ aspires to reprogram the mind, to transcend our expectations through bugged-out percussion, modular mayhem, flurries of free improvisation, and voices carrying through the air. Hieroglyphic Being & JITU Ahn-Sahm-Bul develop consciousness from primordial ooze. As in listening, the ooze intones an echo of our deep past, rendering the present ever focused. ‘We Are Not The First’ is an 11-part epic and each track is a movement therein that testifies: an ensemble’s vitality lives in its collectivity. When we ask the ooze, the ooze articulates: ‘We Are Not The First’.

Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio – Keep Your Mind Open [BDN007]

The Bedouin imprint continues on with its quest for the sublime and exotic in modern techno and house music. Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio delivers more of his signature dusty lo fi electronics but gets an industrial tinged stomp on with “Keep Your Mind Open” and it’s absolutely killer. On the flip is “That Is The Name Of The African God” which is an analogue jam that sounds more like the Hieroglyphic Being we know.

Matrixxman – Stuxnet [SPC129]

Rich with analog ideas, Matrixxman shows his interests in deep Chicago moods with techno futurism. StuxNet follows the futuristic path Matrixxman has carved out with two new acid-leaning cuts: StuxNet I and StuxNet II paired with two Amulet EP stand-outs, Venetian Mask and The Caravan, remixed by Hieroglyphic Being and Silent Servant.

Hieroglyphic Being – The Four Dimensions Of A Nubian Mystic [TCLR009]

Deep and tripping acid backed with some jazzed out drumworks on the flip. Producer and boss of Mathematics records, Chicago’s Jamal Moss a.k.a Hieroglyphic Being is a one-off musical explorer. Jamal’s music takes cues from the EBM and House that played a huge part in the city’s musical underground in the late eighties and early nineties, notably Ron Hardy and Adonis, but also Industrial, Avant-Jazz and Noise. His releases, much like his music, have straddled House labels and the more leftfield avant garde electronic imprints with ease. However his deeply held Afrofuturist intent and the discipline of his radical designs set him apart from the pack. Always moving forward, his music is an ever-evolving transmission from his mind to our bodies, or as he sees it, a form of meditation that the supple, tuned listener will enjoy immensely.

Hieroglyphic Being & The Configurative Or Modular Me Trio – The Seer Of Cosmic Visions [ZIQ349]

Crazy etherial collection of some previously released and some unreleased tracks presented in album form. The album is hugely varied within it’s basic drum machine and synths template; from the psychedelic blowout ‘The Seer Of Cosmic Visions’ and the distorted, ruptured crunch of ‘How Wet Is Ur Box’, to more delicate meditations like ‘Space Is The Place’ or ‘Letters From The Edge’. From the the shimmering rhythmic noise of ‘A Genre Sonique’ to the the woozy tribal funk of ‘134340 Pluto’ or the rough darting strings of the off-kilter ‘Calling Planet Earth’ and finishing on the relaxing gaseous drones of ‘Strange Signs In The Sky’, the album never fails to transport the listener to another state of mind.

Pedro Vian – Dancing Hindus EP [MOM001]

VIAN, Pedro - Dancing Hindus EP

Pedro Vian with remixes by Hieroglyphic Being ad the Italian-futuristic Madteo. On side A of the disc we find an original track entitled News From Near Future, which is along techno noisy lines at low revs and full of highly emotionally charged melodies. The second track is the remix by Jamal Moss, head of the American squadron Mathematics Recordings. On the flip side of the disc we discover a monumental reinterpretation by Madteo 15 ‘minutes long.

Hieroglyphic Being – Acid Rain Under The Stars [TRAJECTORY1009]

An explosive caustic acid concoction awaits from within the grooves of this gargantuan twelve inch from Chicago heavyweight, Hieroglyphic Being. ‘Free the Energy (No Vocal Energy)’ is highly volatile, with severely unforgiving and distorted drum programming, this violently radioactive adventure is nothing short of brutal and certainly not for the squeamish. Title cut, ‘Acid Rain Under the Stars’ paints a dreamy landscape, while the acidic protons and neutrons busily rebound in the background on this elongated, hypnosis-inducing and beautifully mind-distorting headtrip.
