Long term Seven Hills friend and collaborator Thee J Johanz returns to wax for the third instalment of our original release series. This release runs close to the heart for Johanz as it was produced in the wake of his mother’s passing and stands as a profoundly personal eulogy for loved ones passed. Where Goes Your Soul? has all the trademark spiralling synth lines and hypnotic rhythm making that we have come to love in Johanz’s music making.

Wet Silk – Wet Silk [MS06]
Wet Silk was a rare digression into house music by the legendary star-crossed duo of Lamar Thomas and Judy Taylor. For this sonic liaison, Thomas brought along his high school friend, disco impresario Patrick Adams to co-produce, and the resulting “Let Me Do You Baby” is a slow and seductive sunset soirée with champagne and caviare. The track is skillfully arranged with slippery 808 programming, serpentine guitar, and silky pads, all sliding around Thomas and Lamar’s playfully suggestive vocals. For the first 12” release of this hypnotic track, Mixed Signals have paired it with two other delicious Thom/Tay productions, the rare and dubby house mix of Shelly Pearse’s “If You Want My Love”, and the instrumental end-of-the-nighter “I’ll Be Waiting”.
Morgan – Vakonwana [LCT006]
A banging South African bubblegum tune, with house club mix on the flip! The start of the 90’s brought the final wave of House music that would cement it as the future of South Africa’s music scene. In the years leading up to the new decade, Disco had already naturally evolved into the very early stages of what would become South Africa’s signature House sound, with Instrumentals and Dub Mixes earning themselves spots on the Pantsula records leading the charts of the late 80s, it would be an influx of remixes appearing on import singles that would make the “House mix” the premier b side sound for those bubblegum artists trying to stay relevant in the 90’s.

Alphonse – Beechwood DNA [WRECKS033]
Anonymous producer Alphonse returns to Klasse Wrecks for his third release on the label and brings with him a concoction of familiar sounds and flavors. The ‘Beechwood DNA’ EP sounds like a grip of the producer’s influences and inspirations funneled through his sample heavy approach to production, taking wild turns unannounced. Acid licks and unruly breakbeats are definitely nothing new but the producers considered summation of each track is truly original and surprising. The EP rounds off with the title track ‘Beechwood’, a painfully beautiful ode that captures a nostalgic mood and shows off the producers well-informed ear for a catchy sample.

Continental – Whispers [RDV07]
Ambroise Boret is a French engineer, mixer and producer located in Paris who released material under various guises from the nineties through to the early 2000’s. Here we see his Continental moniker brough back into the limelight, highlighting a selection of material from the Pushin’ It Up EP on Alliance Records. Up first is ‘Flying Dub’, as the name would suggest a dub-infused excursion through gliding chord sequences, snaking bass licks and bright string sequences while swinging analogue drums dynamically evolve throughout. ‘Way U Jack’ follows, introducing a more Chicago leaning attitude rhythmically alongside low-pitched vocal murmurs, fluttering dub chords and a bumpy bass line. Title-track ‘Whispers’ follows on the b-side next, employing ethereal atmospherics, flute like synth melodies, organ bass tones and crunchy, shuffled percussion. Rounding out the EP Cosmin TRG reworks ‘Whispers’, offering a contemporary twist on the original with intricately programmed drums, subtly nuanced introductions of the originals atmospherics, winding low-end pulsations and an overall ornate, dynamic feel.
Jori Hulkkonen – Keys Of Life Remixes [LIFE12IN-11]
Two classic Finnish acid house remixes from year 2004 by Jori Hulkkonen. Where the A-side’s remix of unreleased Acid Kings track makes Jori’s rapping sound as embedded as resonance in a silver case – the flip side is deep, driving, juxtaposing pop and underground in a way Manchester’s dance scene was famous for in the hayday-80’s. What’s that sound so fresh and wicked..?
Jordan GCZ – Introspective Acid [RHM034]
Jordan GCZ takes our minds raving along psychotropic wallpapered hallways of sound with this tight set of emotive belters for Rush Hour. Party starting Berlin trio ItaloJohson have only ever aimed to serve up music to jack the floor. Their own self-titled outlet for this weaponry is now up to a 14th instalment and still it sounds fresh and inventive. These are three more robust tracks with ‘track 2’ particularly getting us going – the bleeping synth riffs, glitchy hi hats and vast, booming kicks are pure basement dynamite. The same can be said of the rock slid ‘Track 3’ which also has some slippery acid lines weaving in and out of the rugged drums. This is form and functioning coming together in perfect harmony.
