Lerosa – Subcouture [IDLE040]

LEROSA - Subcouture EP

Idle Hands presents the first 12″ of 2017 from Lerosa, a four-tracker beamed across the Irish Sea to Bristol. The ‘Subcouture’ EP sees the esteemed producer operating at the intersection of dubby electro and deep house, taking in the sub-heavy frequencies Bristol is known for, whilst retaining an agile and sleek simplicity. ‘Maryelen’ is a tight, yet pastoral electro track where dreamy pads contrast against tough, cutting drum programming. ‘Line Bass’ is a tumbling and bouncy number, that doffs its cap to reggae disco and features vibrant synths peppering the mix. ‘Scruffy’ takes on a slower and more playful mood, featuring light licks of acid and off kilter keys. ‘Subcouture’ is a subtle dubbed out house cut with a hint of shuffle.

Taking the low end tradition of Bristol music and marrying it to a murky, swung 4/4 aesthetic, Kowton returns to Idle Hands with a 2 tracks EP. “She Don’t Jack” creeps into life with industrial textures before crisp, rigid claps and shuffled hits skip energetically around a bassline malevolent in its simplicity. “Drunk On Sunday” works drum machine grooves from the off, heading down a stripped-bare corridor of pitch-black house.

Fresh outta Bristol’s Rooted Records hub, Headhunter lays down the latest Idle Hands 12″. He appears to be on a Soca-Funky/Dubstep mission with both tracks. This works out best on the smartly poised ‘Lost Prophet’, syncing galloping drums with lung-collapsing subs before a majestic techno synthline comes in to remind us who we’re listening to. On the flip ‘Chasing Dragons’ goes harder with a bulked-up drum palette compatible with more techno-inspired Funky, Juke and Dubstep tracks.
