Executive Slacks – Seams Ruff LP [DE128]

Executive Slacks began in the hot, humid summer of 1980 Philadelphia by Matt Marello, John Young and Albert Ganss, three bored, broke, anxious art students. Starting out with performance art in subways, they soon took their angst-ridden act to galleries and night clubs. The band found their moniker in a run-down bookstore after seeing an ad for men’s polyester pants. They pieced together sounds that captured the growing paranoia of an age predicted by Orwell and the growing inequalities of the 1980s. They excavated two cassettes that contained their earliest recorded material from 1980 and 1981. “Seams Ruff” is a 13 song compilation from these cassette collections plus a bonus flexi disc featuring a live performance on WXPN from 1980. The tracks were created with the use of heavily modified synthesizers and noisemakers, the broken innards of a grand piano, metal oil drums and a spray painted Harmony Rocket guitar. The Slacks drew their influences from contemporaries like Cabaret Voltaire and Tuxedomoon, as well as Disco and Dadaism. Dripping in nihilism, the song’s lyrics tackle the existential dread of the late 20th century and three of the songs are taken from “Mann ist Mann” a 1926 play by the German modernist author Bertolt Brecht. Executive Slacks’ unique brew of primitive electronics, harsh guitars and aggressive vocals inspired many bands like Ministry, Front 242 and Skinny Puppy.

Simon Shreeve – Lust Product [LINO72]

Simon Shreeve appears again this year for Karl O’Connor’s esteemed imprint. The man also known as Mønic pushes the kind of highly-engineered modern industrial music on his own Osiris Musik label, so easily finds a welcome home here. On side A, harsh textural abrasions are contrasted by body bashing bass frequencies on the demonic “System Living” while the seething and slow burning breaks contrasted by eerie chimes and nefarious sound design on “Silver Sun” sounds like running through a nightmare in slow motion. The paranoid and immersive sound design of the title track (on the flip) is reminiscent of some of Trent Reznor’s soundtrack work, yet fantastic in its own right. Shreeve deconstructs the classic aesthetic of UK techstep, deconstructing it in a modern format.

Faster Action – S/T [LIESBLK009]

Amsterdam based Faster Action surfaces on L.I.E.S. with a fresh two track 12 inch. Stated as ”DJ Tools for the DJs” this is what we get here, with the a-side sounding like an late-80s industrial strength 909 driven EBM cut, while the b-side goes strong with a metallic beat track perfect for the adventurous working DJ.

Folkvett – Tröskelvärk [PATER003]

Pater Noster introduce the debut LP from Swedish synth wizard Christian Åkerström. Produced under the alias Folkvett, ‘Tröskelvärk’ is a collection of ten infectious, hypnotic and cinematic frost-covered Nordic synth jams. Analogue and uncompromising melodic minimal synth, this is music for the ice-cold punks.

Clay Rendering – We Are Aware [HOS463]

Clay Rendering, the tortured pop project of former Wolf Eyes member Mike Connelly and his wife Tara, pledge three diverse but unmistakably gothic sacrifices to Hospital Productions. Soused in the spirits of black metal, coldwave pop and shoegaze, their new cuts reflect a black indigo spectrum of tastes with an inflamed desire for proper song structures and the kind of hooks that hearken back to teenaged thrills and what allured them to music in the first place -and it makes for perhaps their most realised set of tracks yet. With Dominick Fernow as producer and effectively acting in a 3rd band member role, they triangulate a sound that’s nostalgic for the gothic undertones of ‘80s and ‘90s darkness, getting into gear with the hearse-cruising coldwave pop rocket We Are Aware, and casting a long, northern-pointing shadow of BM toil and shoegaze anguish in Never Pass Away.

Amato – Le Desordre Et La Nuit [CITI020]

AMATO - Le Desordre Et La Nuit

Michel Amato aka Amato is a French producer more widely known as The Hacker. Alongside Miss Kittin, Amato has been a cornerstone of the European house, techno, and electro scene, dropping singles and album like bombs. Having contributed to a previous split 12″ on Cititrax, Amato returns to Minimal Wave’s sister label with a wondrous homage to industrial, EBM and electro in Le Desordre De La Nuit. The difference between The Hacker and Amato? The sounds of The Hacker are more constrained than this particular whirlpool of pseudo electro and gargling quasi techno. Whatever you want to call it, these four slammers are all made for the dark room dance, each one nastier than the other and all of them audibly produced by an artist with plenty of experience and effectiveness know-how.

ΠΡΟΣΟΠΟ – Prosopo [LXRC027]

Lux Rec shifts again its attention to Greece. ΠΡΟΣΩΠΟ (PROSOPO) is June’s newest alias, and means Face -disturbed microcosm where to experiment with different machines, unconventional textures and rhythms. The result is as uncomfortable as it gets, arid desires, despair concealed with cold resonating motives. A fast descent into a deserted heart. A feverish feeling, much like when it is warm and one still shivers. Annoyed greek Gods playing tricks on humans.

VA – Murray CY Edits [KH004]

In a world where everything is relative, this may well be the final nail in the truth’s coffin. From the past to the present and the present to the past, of stories forgotten and to be told. Murray, labelboss from the great Contort Yourself label, created a library full of edited (un)forgotten cassette material from the first part of the 80’s. This compilation features Die Form, Fan Tan, Nocturnal Emissions, AGem, Beats Per Minute and Parazite: tracks to take you back to the future on the modern day dancefloor.

Alessandro Adriani – Guerilla Warfare [PBD002]

Mannequin Records’ Alessandro Adriani is up next for Pinkman’s White Label series and the flavor is unapologetically wave. Melodies ghost, whisper and finally roar as the Italian pushes the parameters of darkened electronics. Croaking samples and brutish percussion coiling to a bitter end.

Cute Heels – Third Skin EP [DE123]

Cute Heels is the solo project of Victor Lenis, a contemporary artist living in Barcelona, Spain. He grew up in Bogotá, Columbia during the 1990s, surrounded by the radial punk scene. “Third Skin” is a 4-track EP that connects the dots between Detroit techno, early Chicago house and Belgium electronic body music. Inspired by equal parts Liaisons Dangereuses, Drexciya and Black Devil Disco Club. On the A-side are two fresh compositions recorded in 2015. “Third Skin” kicks things in a metallic EBM funk with a pounding bottom end. “Lipstick Information” takes the listener on a dark, psychedelic and twisted journey through thrillingly intense arpeggiations. On the flip we present two remixes. The first is from Steffi and the second remix comes from Michel Amato aka The Hacker.

Xao Seffcheque – Kess 02 [KESS002]

“On KESS02 we go straight to the core of the Kess Kill sound and aesthetic with this contemporary of Liaisons Dangereuses and D.A.F. Xao produced some extremely singular music in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which makes for a very proud first reissue for Kess Kill. This is music so unparalleled that making comparisons is completely redundant. Think jacked up post-punk with manic rhythmic tendencies and you’re halfway there.”

Le Chocolat Noir – Transform EP [FRV020]

LE CHOCOLAT NOIR - Transform EP

Frigio Records is on the road again with Le Chocolat Noir. The Croatian artist, known for Disco Panonia and his work as Honored Matres, is no stranger to Frigio, having featured on All Stars Vol 1 in 2014. “Transform EP” is introduced by the industrial mental sounds of “Greedy Pets” which brings a new name to the roster as June delivers his interpretation of it. A grimy wave edge is pursued by the Greek machine man for a driving take. The original staggers into being. Drums slip and bass rumbles in a tense and terse piece of gritty music. Then Le Chocolat Noir offers the dark and looming “N.E.T.”. Blackened lyrics are sampled as thick bars of synth and licks of acid make for a menacing curtain fall on side A. On the flip side, the steely claps and burbling bass are rinsed in metal for the gleaming EBM infused “Doing Dishes” with vocals ghost beneath the currents. Following up, vocals ghost beneath the currents, vocals picked up by Colombia’s Cute Heels as the electronic savant debuts on Frigio for a simmering aquatic remix.
