“Only Now” kicks things off in a rollicking fashion, its stuttering synth riff taking center stage and gradually building atop Ghosts On Tape’s trademark drummy percussion. Those whose who’ve followed Merry’s work know that his command of rhythmic interplay has always been at the heart of his production, and while that skill helps to make ‘Only Now’ an enticing proposition, it really shines on ‘Snake Box.’ Abandoning melody almost entirely, the track offers an intense, drumheavy workout over an insistently thudding bassline. On the remix front, ICEE HOT has enlisted Chicago duo Innerspace Halflife, who infuse ‘Only Now’ with soaring cosmic synths and twisting melodies, giving the song a decidedly (no pun intended) ghostly feel.

When Ike Release and Hakim Murphy joined forces sometime last year, we immediately thought that their very own cosmic take on jackin’ house would be a perfect fit for our label, and boy did they deliver! Achterbahn D’Amour is delivering the latest 12 inch in the Acid Test series from L.A.’s Absurd Recordings. “Cardbox” is a laid back, stripped down and tripped out groove with a spacey dubbed out remix from Chicago’s Innespace Halflife on the B-side along with the bonus cut “Harmonia”.
Sublevel Sounds, a sub-label run by DJ Spider, comes with a four-track remix project featuring tracks from DJ Spider alias Kuru’s “Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy” LP from Summer 2011. Remixes here by Dakini 9, Monty Luke, Joey Anderson and Innerspace Halflife.
The Astrodynamics EP further demonstrates the shared intuition for rhythm and texture that Chicago duo Hakim Murphy and Ike Release have jointly showcased as Innerspace Halflife. Arising on the white label Episodes series, you can’t help but feel impressed from the lead track “Metropolitan” which stealthily expands into a deep groove of analogue patterns and spacious, horizon wide waves of luxuriant synths whose hypnotic powers can’t fully woo your attention away from the excellent procession of rasping drum sounds that drive proceedings forward. Flip over and the tables are turned, with the swampy textures of “Hidden Mist” looking to intoxicate from the off, raw percussion poised tautly fighting for prominence amid the growing presence of other worldly, cosmic melodies. “Cold Fusion” presents a darker, more scattered sounding side to the Innerspace Halflife palette, with nervous jazz influenced keys darting in between the crawlspace between the loose, crunchy drums.
Americans Hakim Murphy and Ike Release are two Chicago house addicts who produce solo and as a duo under the name Innerspace Halflife. Here they turn up on one of Europe’s finest deep house labels in MOS Deep with a two-track 10” vinyl release. “Wind” is the a-side the pair turn in – a main room house banger with icy hi hats dangling above a forceful acid bassline that repeats over and over as thin pads sing about above and have you look to the future. It’s wholly analogue as you’d expect, and as atmospheric as it is fierce. Ike Release goes solo on the flip with “Phazzled”, a much more laid back deep house jaunt with long legged, rubbery kicks and all sorts of busy sci-fi FX filling in the gaps. The harmonic chords add plenty of warmth and invite you to get lost in their midst – classicist house with a future perspective.
