John Heckle – Laid Away EP [SCN004]

Scenery Records serves up a full EP from Liverpool’s much loved house and techno inventor, John Heckle. Remixes come from Dekmantel duo Ksoul & Muteoscillator and MOS alumnus Perseus Traxx. Up first is the oh so lively ‘Laid Away’ which has myriad synth lines all squiggling about above jacking, rough edges house beats. Some of them squeal, some of them are smooth and serene and overall the result is a multi-layered track that fires every synapse in your body. The Perseus Traxx remix of the same track ups the acid ante, smoothes out some of the edges but retains that classic Chicago feel that defines much of his work, whilst Ksoul & Muteoscillator strip everything back to buried deep drums, gentle clattering percussion and a seriously ponderous synth line. It’s moody and desolate yet hugely inviting. ‘DDT’ is a much deeper and murkier affair. Everything comes coated in layers of dirt and dust, be it the sporadic cowbell ping, the scraping percussive smears or the frenzied synth lines. Frankly, the hi hats are so sharp edged you feel they might cut you and the blasts of white noise add yet more layers of intrigue.

Ksoul & Muteoscillator – Soul Hell [DKMNTL013]

Cover art - Ksoul & Muteoscillator: Soul Hell

Italians Ksoul & Muteoscillator are back with some more dusty and degraded sounding tracks, this time for Holland’s irrepressible Dekmantel imprint. There are three new cuts in total from the pair, each exploring a slightly different yet always knackered house groove.

VA – Strings Of Love [KSR011]

Kinda Soul Recordings is back with a 3 track ep featuring Chet, Mnks (a project by M.Napoletano & Ksoul), Isoul8 & K.Tatham. “Strings of love” by Chet is an obscure sexy house track done in Dresden. “Collapsing Machines” by Ksoul & M.Napoletano is a sinister jazzy industrial track produced live in one take only at Marcello’s studio a couple of years ago trying to explore many sides of our musical taste. The b-side feature an awesome unreleased track by the reverend Isoul8 & Kaidi Tatham on keys.

Ksoul & Muteoscillator – Aphrology EP [MOSDEEP013]

KSOUL/MUTEOSCILLATOR - Aphrology

MOS Deep returns with a new EP from Italians Ksoul & Muteoscillator. ‘Criminology’ comes in two parts on the a-side: the first is a fizzing, almost impenetrable network of analogue lines with acid buried deep below sharp percussion and behind a mysterious little melody phrase, whilst the second features a different sort of acid: it’s brighter and seems to twist and turn with a life of its own. The b-side is ‘Aphrology’ as edited by Aroy himself. The underlying vibe here is house, though a squealing world of ticking machines, squirming synths and jangling percussive rhythms make it a heady and intense listen. Finally, the same track appears in its original form where tumbling drums, bleeding acid and a steppers rhythm join the dots between many different worlds: the heady results are sure to make dancefloors go cerrrrazy.
