Mark E – Shelter [PR20]

Ten years and twice as many records have come out since Public Release shared its inaugural 12-inch with the world, and it feels fitting to mark the occasion of its twentieth with new work by a steady partner in crime, Mark E. The English Midlander, known as a peddler of classic house laced with the unexpected—sprinklings of frisky Italo and wiggly disco here, splatterings of taut techno and woozy dub there —made his P.R. debut with 2016’s steamy industrial chugger, Sky Horn, and has also been a frequent remixer for the Northern Californian label.

E-Versions – #5 [MERC021]

Merc return with the first in the next phase of E-Versions. As ever, MARK E’s best selling and precision club jams project delivers big things for discerning dancers We’ve witnessed first-hand the damage that A Side cut ‘Horn Jam’ visits on a sweaty dancefloor, with its insistent frug and layers of rising synths – a hypnotic bomb as only Mark can deliver On the flip Sanctified makes a meal out of a killer soul sample, working the arrangement into waves of subtle frenzy.

Mark E – E-Work #1 [MERC020]

Mark E makes a rapid return after the hugely successful E-Versions series, we now embark E-Work. While E-Versions celebrated the full, dazzling shimmer of the Disco ball lit dancefloor, E-Work turns down the lights, and turns up the system for some pared down sonic sorcery. Emotive, muscular machine jams then, in Vocal and Instrumental versions.

Mark E – Emergency [ESP025]

Mark E with his first offering for the ESP Institute. ‘Laurentian Abyss’ undoubtedly conjures narrative images from the depths of a man’s soul, trudging through an array of rhythmic pulse, percussion and arpeggiation that resembles the inner workings of a grandfather clock, based on a disorienting 5/4 timing yet culminating in a singular stroke. On the flip side, the title track ‘Emergency’ begins with the formula for which we know Mark E best, the ultimate tease winding us up for the big payoff, yet here we’re forced into a cyclical trance which diverts our attention so effectively that we never actually receive what we’ve been waiting for, Mark’s elusive drop.

Ma Spaventi – Revolver EP [MXU001]

SPAVENTI, Ma - Revolver EP

Ma Spaventi’s Revolver, Most Excellent Unlimited’s inaugural release, is something of a Swiss army knife for DJs planning to venture into the wilderness. There’s a melancholic, mid-tempo house number, “The Sick Tape Dealer,”that’s lit with a crystalline glow. There’s “Slowmo,” a loping openerthat suffuses an andante house groove in queasy Giallocore tones. “Revolver,” the record’s fastest cut, balances strapping snares andinsistent open hi-hats with dreamy chords; it sits on the fence between placid and acid, just the thing for tipping the night intofull gear. And the slow-motion tearjerker “La Valle Delle Lacrime”comes in two versions — one with a skeletal drum machine and a beatless edit that revels in the simplicity of his analog synths. Luxuriating in ringing fifths with just a hint of Theremin-likewarble, it’s an unusually sturdy example of ethereal ambient techno. On remix duties, the prolific Mark E delivers a deep, atmospheric, slow burner.

VA – Epic Disco Vol. 2 [ROLLER008]

Prins Thomas, Mark E, Bulgari and Ultra City all feature on Epic Disco Vol 2, the long overdue return to the twelve inch game from the Rollerboys imprint. Label supremos Ultra City aka Elias & Yourhighness open proceedings in excellent fashion with the resplendent “Delta” a richly rewarding exercise in effervescent Chicago house based around instantly uplifting piano tones and loose cascading Roland 707 patterns – instant dancefloor uplift guaranteed on this one. Merc boss Mark E follows with the deeper sounds of “Walk With Me” utilising a familiar vocal refrain amidst a musical arrangement that pairs subtle elements such as heart warming chords with the more intense synths. Flip over and Prins Thomas introduces a lesson in the art of infinite build via the primal, stripped down 303 jam “Stockholm Express” which has us rather excited for his forthcoming new album. Rollerboys regular Bulgari eases down the tempo to finish with a echo laden electro boogie future classic in the shape of “I Was On”.
