Function – Existenz [TRESOR315]

For his new album Existenz, Function marks a clear step away from the corporeal techno of his recent releases. Pivoting around themes of religion, sexuality, trauma and healing, it is a work expansive and celebratory, a clear liberation from a deeply internalized past. Formed from a collection of recordings made in a period from late 2016 to mid 2019, Existenz takes the form of a creative outburst in reaction to a number of traumas – recent, childhood and throughout Function’s life. Life partner Stefanie Parnow assisted the production process in its entirety, providing inspiration, spiritual healing and featuring vocal contributions.

Deep88 – Remix EP [ASC303]

The remix EP for Deep88. Luis CL gives the deserved treatment to “Harmony”, doing a mellow balearic deep house trip. RNR transforms the collaboration between Deep88 and Robert Owens into a massive floor killer, with the perfect match of soul and electronic. Rhythm 2 Soul takes back the old “La Beija” and adds a 92ish Italian classic flavour with a version perfect for after hours. MHCrew brings “Rotation” to the next level adding lysergic synths and dreamy melody in an early Nugroove classic vibe. Jimini instead with his elegance and pureness add a mellow melancholic vibe to The Vibe.

Fingers Inc. / Robert Owens – I’m Strong [ML2204LE]

A one of a kind track with a totally unique groove and a bass line not coming from this world. The DX sound that makes the track so powerful sounds like some kind of mutant machine that is going wild and the sublime combination with the Robert Owens vocals makes this a highlight in the history of house music.

Playgroup – Previously Unreleased EP 1 [YWP001]

Trevor Jackson tends to do things differently, so the recent announcement of nine EPs of previously unheard Playgroup material, to be released in the space of nine weeks, should have come as little surprise. Opener “Move My Body” is particularly strong, and features sampled Robert Owens vocals rising and falling over a classic, late ’80s Chicago house groove. There’s a similar retro-futurist feel to the more acid-flecked Ed DMX collaboration “I Want To Believe”, while “Play The Music” combines similar influences with a touch of NYC proto-house.

Fingers Inc. – Another Side [ML9001LP]

Some 17 years after it’s original release, Fingers Inc’s expansive debut album, Another Side, remains one of the greatest deep house full-lengths of all time. Here, the album gets the re-master and re-issue treatment, with the original double vinyl set being expanded to a triple to guarantee loud cuts for club play. While there are plenty of well-known Heard and co classics present – “Mysteries of Love”, “Bring Down The Walls”, “Can You Feel It” etc. – it’s actually the long-forgotten album tracks that really hit the spot. It’s on these moments – often influenced as much by ’80s soul and synth-pop as acid and Chicago jack-tracks – that Larry Heard, Robert Owens and Ron Wilson really cut loose.

Nick Anthony Simoncino feat. Robert Owens – Some People EP [TRA028]

Italian producer & Hot Mix label boss Nick Anthony Simoncino is back with “Some People”, a collaboration with Chicago’s legendary House vocalist Robert Owens.  Simoncino’s 3 original mixes sound just like tracks lifted off lost EP’s straight from the mid 80’s with deep, melancholy synths, driving analogue drum machine sounds and Owen’s yearning vocal performance coming together beautifully while showing off Simoncino’s versatility as a producer. “Some People” is perfect late night House music with a classic sensibility, for the deepest hours of the night or the morning. On remix duties we have the UK’s very own Chamboche who delivers a deep, rolling version of “Some People” keeping things nice and stripped back and adding a dubby quality to his mix while Finnish new school House head Trevor Deep Jr’s “Warehouse Mix” keeps Owen’s vocals right up-front with some killer drum programming and percussion rounding out the EP while keeping the old school vibe firmly anchored to the dance-floor.

Orgue Electronique – Strange Paradise [CRLP009]

A double album by Orgue Electronique aka Brian Chinetti on Creme Organization. What lies here before you is sculpted out of the blood and tears of 5 years of life, and all the dreams, imagination, tristesse and longing that goes along with it. A mesmerizing double album: wholly matured and further enhanced by collaborations with luminaries like Robert Owens, Alden Tyrell and cult hero Fre2k. It’s warm and generous, made up of real emotions, of moments frozen in time and of the impassioned cries of a soul on the run. To finally let it go after so many years is – for all the parties involved – a strange yet exciting moment, not unlike the birth of an elephant baby…. out of a human female.
