In the 3rd Downbeat release, the main star is the Waldorf Sound. This release means the debut of one of the heads of the label, Jose Rico. His two tracks (“Restructure again” and “About it”) are obsessive, direct and forceful and define clearly his tastes and influences. Detroit and above all, Detroit. On side B, (the essential) Mike Huckaby gives us a bright pearl with a piano solo reminding us of his works on Deep Transportation.
Techno deity Jeff Mills presents the fourth installment of his series of unexplained (and unnamed) techno phenemonena. No stranger to providing techno backing to Sci Fi classics, Something In The Sky Vol 4 sounds like Mills providing the music to a 50s B movie about a Martian invasion of Washington DC via four cuts of outer galactic head music.
First up is ‘Sepia’, a collaboration between Matt O’Brien and Audiostatic, who deliver a low slung, head nodding, 120 bpm dubbed out house monster. Recorded over 8 years ago, this track has a timeless quality which makes it just as relevant today. Minor Planets kick off the B side with skeletal electro of ‘Constructor’ – heavy sub bass underpins a clanking beat while muted reverberated melodies bubble up to the surface. Rounding off this EP is ‘3dub’ by Kimble, a blissed out piece of ethereal lo-fi electronica.

This Friday, August 6 Marcel Dettmann brings his talents to the place that he has described as one of his top 5 party spots in the world, Brooklyn’s The Bunker. Back in May, The Bunker launched a Berghain and Panorama Bar quarterly residency with Prosumer and Tobias to much acclaim. Now Marcel, and Panorama Bar resident Steffi take to the decks and bring the sounds of two of the world’s best clubs to the underground atmosphere of Public Assembly. Be on the look out for tracks off of Marcel’s debut artist album Dettmann on Ostgut Ton Records which has been gaining glowing reviews for its fluid and experimental take on modern techno. In anticipation of this one of a kind event, Rhythmism.com talks with Marcel about the new album, why it is so difficult for Eurpoean DJs to get work visas on time, and the state of affairs in Berlin’s techno scene.

We missed out on the first volume, but we’re certainly not making the same mistake with ‘Spatial Disco 2’! It’s the second in a series of library records compiled by the Austrian Electunes label and entirely drawn from the legendary Tele Music catalogue, this time focusing on the electronic productions of Saveur Mallia between 1981 and 1984, most specifically the ‘Cosmosynthetic’, ‘Percussions Modernes’ and ‘Automation’ albums. The styles rove between early Art Of Noise or Arthur Baker alike electro on ‘Smurfissimo’ to Robotnick-esque jaunts such as ‘New Wave Sequence’ and urgently uptempo breakdancers like ‘Robot Scratch’. Our favourites have to be the Italo propulsion of ‘Macadam Locomotion’ and the atmospheric bassline arpeggios of ‘Rectangle Astral’. A must for anyone who got a kick out of the Tangerine Traume compilation or fans of Riechmann, John Carpenter etc.

Apiento & Co follow up their 7” for Claremont 56 with a new 12” for Leng. This again has lush, mellow ibizian mood about it but could work wonders on the dancefloor late at night. The slow arpegiated groove leads us into a hooky piano with the strings and then a lovely piano solo drifts along and completes the package. Pete Herbert turns it round and aims straight for the dancefloor in true disco Herbert style.
Mike Simonetti takes an edit to three very obscure 90s house tracks. A track was modified for better club use… extended so it builds, builds and builds… The two tracks on the b-side sound like 90’s Japanese piano house and a happy house rave track flipped on 33.
The Hipodrome Of Music
