The Exaltics – Twelve EP [SHIP024]

German producer and acid head The Exaltics is back with a new EP on Shipwrec that comes with a remix by Unit Moebius Anonymous and terrific artwork by Jaco Putker. Real name Robert Witschakowski, The Exaltics is co founder of the Solar One Music label and has turned out a steady stream of EPs and LPs on labels like Trust, Creme Organization and Clone West Coast Series until now, always coming on strong with a dense techno style. Opener ‘The New Beginning’ continues in that tradition where electro drums are run through with racing acid and more serene and tender synths colour in the backdrop. ‘Coroded’ is a much more bulky and brutal techno affair with tough drums that roll up and down, even angrier acid lines and plenty of industrial percussion. Final original ‘Downwards’ is even quicker and more abrasive and barely allows you to catch your breath with its hurried kick drums, ripping 303 and frankly manic, metallic hi hats. The Unit Moebius Anonymous remix is suitably tough and teeth clenching with paranoid sirens, gun like percussion and a true sense of unstoppable force. Serious techno for serious heads, this is an arresting EP that it is impossible to ignore.

Ron Hardy – Muzic Box Classics #8 [MBC207]

Ron Hardy is the only man who can test Frankie Knuckles’ status as Godfather of Chicago House Music. Though he rarely recorded under his own name and left little evidence of his life, Hardy was the major name for Chicago’s dance music from the late 70s to the mid-80s. By 1974, he had already effected a continuous music mix with reel-to-reel machines plus a dual-turntable setup at the club Den One. Several years later, Hardy played with Knuckles at a club called the Warehouse and though he spent several years in Los Angeles, he later returned to Chicago to open his own club along with Robert Williams, the Muzic Box. While Knuckles was translating disco and the emerging house music to a straight, southside audience at the Power Plant, Hardy’s 72-hour mix sessions and flamboyant party lifestyle fit in well with the uptown, mostly gay audience at the Muzic Box. A roll-call of major Chicago producers including Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Phuture’s DJ Pierre and Chip E all debuted their compositions by pressing up acetates or reel-to-reel copies for Hardy to play during the mid-80s. This CD compilation brings together some of of the classic house and electro-dance tracks he played at the Muzic Box back in the day.

Flexi / Blendi / Adopo – Wirr 1 [WIRR001]

Industrialized and stripped techno tracks from the Atelier Records/General Elektro based Adopo, Blendi and Flexi. The four spacious, industrial riddims all come with hints of new beat and acid, ghost synth sounds and male & female vocals entering and leaving the mix as if recorded in a parallel world. A steady run from the underworld of General Elektro.

Woody McBride – When Good Times Turn Sour [FN018]

Classic 90s acid unleashed again in the 21th Century, Forced Nostalgia revisit choice tracks from US DJ and producer Woody McBride. These four tracks, remastered for this release, appeared on several of the veteran’s releases two decades ago but are every bit as urgent today. ‘The Head Is Not Longer Than The Body’, unrelenting in its forward motion, takes a simple acid riff and keeps on pushing until the pressure is unbearable. ‘Pasture’s Star Route’, with its scattered snares and pounding techno kicks, throws down a haunting acid riff that pans through the body, let alone the speakers. There’s just as much terror in ‘Out Of Reach’ and ‘Pure Ideas’ even if the latter is slower and more delicate in its approach.

I Vy / Solid State – Vol. I [CL001]

I VY/SOLID STATE - Vol I

First release for I.vy on her own label Chinese laundry. The delicate task is entrusted to the producer, which presents herself for the first time ever with a release of her own, not surprisingly titled “Vol I”. A careful work, a well illustrated journey, where the four cardinal points are 4 originals marked by a bass line sound that seems to come from a TB 303 just dusted off by a deposit of Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi .

Retape – Signals On The Double [030EP006]

A gorgeous 6-tracker by Norwegian techno/electro/acid artist Retape. The EP takes off where Drexciya and related projects such as The Other People People Place left it in the early 2000s. The title track takes it away and is the most technoid of all with a driving bassline and open hi-hats while long stretched melodies finish it off; this one sucks you onto the dance floor as if it were one big whirlpool. The second cut “Coir” is a serene a downtempo 4/4 track that gets you overwhelmed with an otherworldly melody sneakily coming in about midway. “EMN” then, pulls you straight underwater with its hard hitting snares, plastic bassline and acid feel. The tempo goes up with “Cars”, a delay-heavy spaced out acid track for unstable dance floors. The following track “Rotation” is a beatless excursion into the world of clinical synthesized sci-fi music. The incorrectly named “Moving Down” is the final track and a true upper: high speed melodic electro with a touch of melancholia.

Femminielli Noir continue their tour-de-force with some hard hitting rhythms on Malas Influencias. Acid drenched basslines squiggle within your soul like a demented and unhinged drug binge.
