Rio Padice – Urania EP [RAWAX008]

PADICE, Rio - Urania EP

Having slowly plugged away at the underground scene for many years now, Rio Padice seems to be settling into his own sound now, and it’s right at home on Rawax. There’s a brittle quality to the pumping drums that Padice programmes, as if they might shatter at any given moment. Meanwhile the vibes that surround these skeletal rhythms range from the mellow keys of “Track 1” through to the red-lined acid squelch of “Track 2”. With everything lovingly fed through an aging process to give it a grainy quality, you can’t deny that the man has worked hard to make his tracks raw.

Orgue Electronique – Strange Paradise [CRLP009]

A double album by Orgue Electronique aka Brian Chinetti on Creme Organization. What lies here before you is sculpted out of the blood and tears of 5 years of life, and all the dreams, imagination, tristesse and longing that goes along with it. A mesmerizing double album: wholly matured and further enhanced by collaborations with luminaries like Robert Owens, Alden Tyrell and cult hero Fre2k. It’s warm and generous, made up of real emotions, of moments frozen in time and of the impassioned cries of a soul on the run. To finally let it go after so many years is – for all the parties involved – a strange yet exciting moment, not unlike the birth of an elephant baby…. out of a human female.

ViLLan X feat Kold / DCantu – Disparate Implementation [SEQ003]

Killer release on New York’s Sequencias label. Powerful and hypnotic Chicago acid inspired cut on the A and a cool slow building chord driven track layered over raw drum rhythms on the b-side. A pair of artists from two different points along Interstate 94, who have a reputation for the very same. The main body laid down by VILLan X is tight metallic percussion underpinned by solid kicks and a stream of robotic filtered bass, containing unexpected shifts within the frequency register. Foreboding tones and feelings drift towards us across which the disembodied voice of Kold is able to find a platform from which to shudder into our consciousness and pose questions from across the galaxies about the nature of our very being. dcantu carries on the feelings of space, with protracted white noise shots and stabby modulated organ chords, but doesn’t leave it long before setting the pace with solid drums and shifting keyboard funk aimed squarely your body and the dance floor as octave changes force you up and then down again to a backdrop thick with texture. This provides for the body and the mind.

Violence FM – Ondulation EP [SUIT002]

The second release from the Skylax sublabel Stay Underground, It Pays is coming from Violence FM. Rhythm playing and drum-machines programmings, editing, mix and mastering, his compositions are often inspired by tribal spirits, organic deep bass and melodies, oscillating beetween smoothie and energy, or both. Deep & Drum could be summing up his mind working, but no matter because the energy and emotion are primarily convened for a result that combines demanding sensuality and wildness. The release comes with a John Heckle remix.

Alex Isreal – Front Butt [CR1258]

AUDIO: Alex Isreal - Front Butt

Alex Israel, Chicago’s own overlord of deranged deep house comes to Creme with a rip-roaring four tracker in said style. Lush pads meander over swampy basslines and drum patterns that wash over you like a sweet Monsoon. Hard to imagine it was conceived in the Windy City, but we guess the allure of the unattainable is a potent one.

Paul du Lac – Child’s Play [CJFD012]

Three new and raw box tracks by Paul du Lac, who seems to be pushing his minimalistic jackin’ sound palette even further. We have the fierce and autistic-tantristic dirtyness of ‘Tantra Master’, the Dance Mania flavoured funk of ‘Childs Play’, and the deep strings of the bassline-driven ‘Spaces Below’, a classic Chicago-inspired piece of work that seems to come from deep within.

Max D – Orgies of The Hemp Eaters [FT013]

Track artwork

Future Times presents a new Max D 12″, with a remix by Terekke! Max is back from the jungles of “Polo”, and he’s shed some of the atmosphere to make two cuts in full precision mode. “Orgies Of The Hemp Eaters” swings between Sakamoto romanticism and classic bass euphoria while the drums almost snap the track apart. Terekke steps in next with his “Can’t Get Enuff Mix” and punishes with a smudged version. B-side “Slick” streamlines the flow into a taut, intricate frenzy – a meditation on melody and the pure bliss of machines.

LHAS INC – Will You Dance With Me [CY009]

Strong track from L.H.A.S. Inc. (Jamie Read and Felix Dickinson). Analogue synths and vintage drum machines rock along with an infectious old school style reminiscent of the early sounds coming from Chicago and New York in the late 80’s early 90’s. On the B side Phoreski delivers a remix that takes the track to another level, darker haunting synths and a robo vocal asking, ‘Do you like the way you feel, will you dance with me’.

Chicago Shags – The Family Album [MOS017]

CHICAGO SHAGS aka LEGOWELT - The Family Album

Brian ‘Orgue Electronique’ Schijf and Danny ‘Legowelt’ Wolfers return with their project Chicago Shags on the ever-excellent MOS Recordings. The four track EP starts with ‘Ponderosa’; a forward looking, cosmic surfing house cut wired with plenty of smooth electronics and pure jacking energy, before ‘Pancake Breakfast’ glistens and glints just as much with its firefly synth lines, gurgling baseline and sweet, pixelated melodies. ‘Firetruck Sunday’ is more dense and edgy, never resting in one place for more than a single beat, with chattery drums and claps offset by a rounded, smoothed but acidy bassline. Finally, ‘To The Westfield’ surges and soars through more sci-fi universes as a house groove busies itself below.

R-A-G – Black Rain EP [MOSDEEP011]

RAG - Black Rain EP

MOS Deep presents Black Rain EP, the return to the label for R-A-G aka Aroy himself, G-String and Marco Spaventi. Opening with ‘Fog’ the deep vibe is set immediately. Crispy snares, a chugging groove and plenty of eerie sonics swirl around into something with a keen sense of foreboding. The titular track then gets all Chicago with its busy claps and nagging synth lines. The mood is a sombre one for those creepy back room sets and the analogue machinery used to make it gives a trademark warm and fuzzy feel to proceedings. The EP closes with a reprise of ‘Black Rain’. This beat-less rework deals in ambient synthscapes that drag you into their fold and never let you go.
