VA – CPU128 Classics [CPU10000000]

Central Processing Unit releases have all been logged in an eight-bit binary numbering system ever since the Sheffield label arrived on the scene with Cygnus’ 2012 LP Newmark Phase. With 256 variations allowed for in the binary catalogue, CPU now hit the halfway point more than a dozen years into their run. In that time the imprint has grown into one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary electro, its monochrome sleeve design reaching iconic status and early releases trading for big money in certain circles. As such, CPU128 Classics serves as both a victory lap and a line in the sand, a survey of some of the highs in the imprint’s discography and a second chance for CPU aficionados to get their hands on out-of-print material.

CN – The Expedition Beyond [FPR003]

Future Primitive is back with an immersive new LP from CN, whose approach to electro comes loaded with analog fuzz and a wistful vision of science-fiction sounds. Originally a cassette release on Wil-Ru Records in 2011 ”The Expedition Beyond” is a musical narrative that chronicles the astral travels of a star-craft and it’s crew through the outer reaches of the Galaxy. 10 tracks of cosmic acid funk, drifty nebulous synth-scapes and robo-centric electro.

CN – The Derelict [WEME313.18/WR057]

Norwegian producer Stian Gjevik returns with his third full length album as CN with The Derelict. The sequel to his 2011 concept album The Expedition Beyond (Wil-Ru Records), The Derelict unravels a new chapter in the story of a space traveller wandering the galaxy in his starship only to crash-land on a foreign planet and encounter new lifeforms. The shuffle of crisp airy high hats and punchy robotic rhythms lay down the framework for CN’s signature cosmic sound. Beautiful hardware based electronic sounds paint a colorful soundscape with blissful arpeggios and soothing washed out synth pads over groovy moving bass-lines, creating lush atmospheric listen that is as chill as it is suitable for the dance foor. Ten new tracks of highly melodic motivating braindance music to get utterly lost in.

VA – WeMe10ans [WEME10ANS]

Though many of the artists that have featured on WeMe Records have released with other labels, it’s fair to say the Brussels operation still retains a unique identity that has set it apart over the past decade. That’s certainly the impression you get from this 13 track compilation, issued to celebrate WeMe Records surpassing the 10 year mark, and a release that neatly documents the label’s commitment to electro and more esoteric fare. Entitled WeMe10ans, the compilation is filled with exclusive material and finds electro mainstays Der Zyklus, DJ Stingray and Global Goon rubbing shoulders with composers such as Francois de Roubaix and Giles Lamb and the singular Leyland Kirby.

Norway’s CN aka Stian Gjevik delivers 4 cuts of spatial analogue electro. Overflowing with uber-melodic synthesizers along with CN’s complete mastery of the drum machine, Voyages is Detroit influenced braindance at its best.
