The colors are stunning. In a single view, I see looking out at the edge of the earth, all the colors of the prism. Red at the horizon, blends to orange and yellow, followed by a thin white line, then light blue, gradually turning to dark blue, then black as the vastness of space engulfs the surroundings. As I looked upon our home rock, I saw many natural features. I witnessed a large river meandering slowly along for miles, passing from one country to another without stopping or hesitation. I also saw huge forests, extending along & across several borders as if these divides didn’t exist. Bantam Lions – Short Stories [SCN010]
Over the last decade, Bantam Lions (AKA Liverpool producer Mike Carney) has devoted much of his spare time to “playful experimentation,” channeling 30 years of musical inspirations and adventures to create electronic music that sits somewhere between hazy nostalgia and far-sighted futurism. DaRand Land – Discover You [SAT030]
DaRand Land gets to spread out and show off his unique brand of euphoric and uplifting deep house on his debut EP for Scissor & Thread label, ‘Discover You’. The title track is classic DaRand Land, with bright piano chords, buzzing organs and a thick Chicago house bass line. Siren-like pads fade in and out from the periphery, as electrifying percussion elements come into play. Frank & Tony take a turn and apply their signature style onto the former track, adding a chunkier kick with bright as day claps and hi-hats to propel the track through the opalescent haze draped over the melodic elements. On the flip, “Marcela’s Sense” is a blissed out, head down late night affair. Cosmic pads swirl around glistening keys and repressed organ chords, as toms bounce among the steady hi-hat ride, lulling the listener into a state of euphoria. The EP closes out with the atmospheric, peak time Detroit house cut, “Souls Awash”. A serpentine bass line runs the show amidst swelling pads and in-your-face kicks and percussion. As with all of his productions, the track shines in the smaller details that float in and out of focus throughout, lending the track’s weightier elements an even greater sense of gravitas.

Duke Hugh – Canvas [RS016]
Bradley Zero met Duke Hugh in Amsterdam, when he handed him a green USB stick after a show. He played the promos in the empty club and the first track immediately grabbed his attention – he knew it was something special. When he remembered the hook to Green Leaf the next morning he signed the release almost instantly. Each song has its own essence, there is absolutely no filler and the entire double pack sits together as a perfect whole. Flirting with aspects of broken beat, Jazz, hip hop and dreamy electronica – Duke Hugh winds together a most idiosyncratic release equally at home on the peak time dancefloor as it would be for a long road trip. Canvas is a big statement from an artist who’s here to stay.

Amazon Club opens the new Rotterdam based ‘Voodoo Gold’ imprint with a 7 track mini album. Operating from the depths of the South-American jungle, Amazon Club brings us a collection of tropical, 70s disco-influenced house tracks combined with some dreamy, cinematic soundscapes. Let the upbeat vibes and rich instrumentation of these tracks carry you away on a journey to the rainforest and the hazy shores of the Amazon river.
Baltra – Sophia EP [STEP011]
Step is the new vinyl-only label from the founders of Pets ” Catz n Dogz” with a focus on the rawest forms and root functions of dance music. Step searches for the fundamentals with under-theradar house and techno that’s not afraid to be rough around the edges. The New York Producer, Baltra, who’s quickly made a name for himself with deep, tape hiss-ridden slices of decent lo-fi, comes to this release on Step. Soulfull but rough around the edges House.

Miskotom – Qi Xin Mian Guan EP [PU005]
Hailing from Lithuanian capital Vilnius, Miskotom appears on Pleasure Unit for a debut appearance that should appeal to all lovers of delicate, pop flecked house with a smooth 80s veneer. The production is perfect for the mood of the music, with the dusty groove of the title track embellished with Eastern flute motifs and Larry Heard chords of the sweetest melancholy. ”Downtown” meanwhile revels in slap bass finery, and ”Tempelhof Kite” gets a rubbery Moog tone in the low end that offsets the woozy pads beautifully. Kito Jempere comes on board for a remix that dubs ”Tempelhof Kite” down into a warm and sexy house cut of the highest order.
