Duke Hugh – Canvas [RS016]

Bradley Zero met Duke Hugh in Amsterdam, when he handed him a green USB stick after a show. He played the promos in the empty club and the first track immediately grabbed his attention – he knew it was something special. When he remembered the hook to Green Leaf the next morning he signed the release almost instantly. Each song has its own essence, there is absolutely no filler and the entire double pack sits together as a perfect whole. Flirting with aspects of broken beat, Jazz, hip hop and dreamy electronica – Duke Hugh winds together a most idiosyncratic release equally at home on the peak time dancefloor as it would be for a long road trip. Canvas is a big statement from an artist who’s here to stay.

Baltra – Sophia EP [STEP011]

Step is the new vinyl-only label from the founders of Pets ” Catz n Dogz” with a focus on the rawest forms and root functions of dance music. Step searches for the fundamentals with under-theradar house and techno that’s not afraid to be rough around the edges. The New York Producer, Baltra, who’s quickly made a name for himself with deep, tape hiss-ridden slices of decent lo-fi, comes to this release on Step. Soulfull but rough around the edges House.

Miskotom – Qi Xin Mian Guan EP [PU005]

Hailing from Lithuanian capital Vilnius, Miskotom appears on Pleasure Unit for a debut appearance that should appeal to all lovers of delicate, pop flecked house with a smooth 80s veneer. The production is perfect for the mood of the music, with the dusty groove of the title track embellished with Eastern flute motifs and Larry Heard chords of the sweetest melancholy. ”Downtown” meanwhile revels in slap bass finery, and ”Tempelhof Kite” gets a rubbery Moog tone in the low end that offsets the woozy pads beautifully. Kito Jempere comes on board for a remix that dubs ”Tempelhof Kite” down into a warm and sexy house cut of the highest order.

VA – Boe XXX [BOEXXX]

Every tenth release for Boe Recordings represents a significant achievement for the vinyl-focused record label and the numerical milestone is celebrated with a special release. The thirtieth installment, BOE XXX is a true family affair with four recognizable Boe artists and two new members added in. Leif’s “That Ice Cream Tune” features shuffling and stuttering arpeggiated leads and metallic syncopated hats and snares. Spoken word hums and an ambient lead add that beautiful sheen to the production. Ben Boe slots in a classy deep electro cut, “Spectral Gate” comprised of weighty analog percussion and shifting synthscapes. Nick Lawson returns to Boe with yet another classy example of high-end deep house. “Wharf Aquatics” bubbles and grooves along with its effervescent dub delayed leads and it’s liquid bass movements. Late night head music. A closely linked artist to the label, Life Recorder finally gets his debut on Boe with a low slung grooving tech houser, “Butterflies”. Aimed squarely at the dance floor this no-nonsense driving cut pumps and grooves for 7 minutes with its persistent Detroit style hook line. Reedale Rise provides “Quadrex”; a Detroit-esque electro track with DBX style hypnotism thrown in for good measure. Space age themes and Drexiycan like pads play off against shuffling percussion mechanics. Finally, after many recent contributions to boe 12″s, the steel city techno-forging don John Shima lays down a stunning piece of ambient work in the vein of B12 and those classic industrial sounds calledLiberation.

Aybee – Man Over Machine [DBRV029]

Armon ‘Aybee’ Bazile is undoubtedly one of electronic music’s most consistent performers. He’s barely put a foot wrong since making his debut in 2004, and continues to deliver high-grade material on a regular basis. Predictably, there’s plenty to get excited about on this 12″, too. “Man Over Machine” is a winding, constantly building gem, with rising and falling, spaced out melody loops riding an off-kilter techno rhythm. On the flip, you’ll find the deep space chord progressions, delay-laden electronics and deep tech-house grooves of “Build Them (Solstice Mix)”, the intricate pianos solos and Soichi Terada style deep house vibes of “Legacy”, and the off-kilter deep house/IDM fusion of “Melted Chains”.

Frank & Tony – Harmonium EP [SAT029]

Frank & Tony streak back onto the scene with one of their most refined efforts yet, ‘Harmonia’. The title cut is an openair, sundrenched euphoric affair. Airy pads and a buoyant bass carry the track effortlessly, and the simple, yet incredibly effective, drum patterning further lightens the tone giving everything the feeling of dancing in a cloud. Slowly, sirenlike synths call out, entrancing the listener into eyes-closed revery. The EP closes on an even higher note as the duo take on John Beltran’s classic “Gutaris Breeze (6000km to Amsterdam)” from his 1996 album, ‘Ten Days of Blue’. The boys left the original mostly untouched, only bringing forth the track’s softer elements to the forefront and adding a monstrously driving kick next to a serpentine bassline, transforming the track into a peaktime powerhouse.

The Order – Underground Rythmic Project [ML003LP]

The third release of Male Records features “The Order” a studio and live group that shares with “The True Underground Sound Of Rome” the same city and sound. A powerful mix of electronic detroit sounds together with melodic and balearic ambient atmospheres. Still comes as collector’s Album edition of 475 copies only containing the original songs from the rare “The Order EP” from 92 plus two unreleased strong songs: “Quasar” and “Way Back” recorded in the same year and performed only live during the big house event “Night Of Male 92” back in the days.
