Moodymann – DJ Kicks [K7327]

Following a year that saw the 50th entry in the long-running series released to wide acclaim, DJ-Kicks returns in 2016 another landmark edition. Iconic Detroit DJ and producer Moodymann is at the helm for his first ever multi-artist DJ mix compilation. Born Kenny Dixon Jr., Moodymann is a one-of-a-kind electronic music icon, hailing from, and wholly synonymous with the Motor City. He is an outspoken, impossibly charismatic artist who has been putting a distinctive and soulful stamp on house and techno since the early 90s. Melting together jazz, funk, soul, blues and rock in captivating ways, he is responsible for some of electronic music’s most definitive tracks, EPs and LPs on labels like Planet E, Peacefrog and his own KDJ and Mahogani Music imprints. As able to serve up the sweetest and most sensual sounds as he is the darkest and most depraved grooves, his own unique voice and stream of conscious musings infuse expertly sought-out samples for music that is decisively alive and authentic.

Scott Cunningham Band – Morning Madness [BH99202]

This is the second 45RPM single release from Praise Poems 3, and what a monster it is. Although both songs are not necessarily new discoveries in the soul and jazz collectors world, it is the first official re-release of these two 1975 recordings. Hopefully the record buyers appreciate the work which was necessary to accomplish this mission of doing a legitimate re-issue. Mr. Cunningham and his music definitely deserves it.

Nu Guinea – The Tony Allen Experiments (Afrobeat Vol.3 ) [COMET072]

Comet announce the third volume of the Afrobeat Makers Series: Nu Guinea – The Tony Allen Experiments. By re-working the original magic drum patterns from the Afrobeat master Tony Allen, Nu Guinea created a compilation of tracks which is charged by a voluminous electronic jazz-Psyche funk imprint. For this release, Comet Records teamed up with Early Sounds Recordings, the berlin label, also home to duo Berliners Nu Guinea. The Naples formed, Berlin-based duo, is a project that arose out of jam sessions, melting synthesizers with instruments, containing a handmade sound that is not aiming for perfection but genuineness. It can be understood as a steadily shaping form, always open for collaborations with other musicians.

NAD – Join The Fookin Party / Hold On Castro [DB008]

Bastedos returns hosting two disco objects lovingly versioned by Nad. One side features the vocal talents of a mystery man with low riding balls imploring those gathered to hear him to ‘join his party’…if you look at his backside, so to speak, you will head off down to sunny rainbow filled Castro for a happy sing along and dancing tune versioned from vaults of Moby Dick.

Shanti Celeste / Funkineven – SSS [APRON020]

In recent times, Bristol’s Shanti Celeste has proved more than adept at blending tough, body-popping electro beats with picturesque electronics and luscious, eyes-closed melodies. She’s at it again here, following up two excellent outings on Future Times with the brilliant “SSS”. Expect just the right blend of tactile, eyes-closed melodiousness, snappy drum machine work, and a fluid bassline that subtly doffs a cap to Syclops’ “Where’s Jason’s K”. Apron boss Funkineven offers his own interpretation on the flip, bringing it closer to early 808 State territory, while adding some neat, boogie-influenced synth touches and saucer-eyed piano flourishes.

Candido – Dancin’ & Prancin’ [SA8520]

Candido Cameron was a Cuban percussion maestro who had played with luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich and Count Basie throughout his illustrious musical career which started in 1952. Fast forward to 1979 and Candido finds himself caught up in the Disco boom that had engulfed his adopted New York City. Feeling he could add his trademark quick-fire Conga and Bongo playing to Disco’s straight 4 x 4 syncopated rhythm he cut some records with legendary NYC label Salsoul. The fruits of this partnership were 2 full length LP’s and a handful of 12″ singles that changed the face of underground Disco. The first of these two LP’s made for Salsoul was the truly epic “Dancin’ & Prancin” containing the all time classic “Jingo” which has been sampled, edited, re-configured and coveted by too many names to mention! It’s a killer funky Disco version of master Nigerian drummer Olatunji’s 1969 percussion suite of the same name, Salsoul style. The LP also contains one of the deepest Disco records of all time; “Thousand Finger Man” a testament to Candido’s percussion prowess and a spacey, beautiful voyage that has left more than an indelible mark on modern House music, often being cited as a huge influence by artists such as Masters At Work and more.

Napoleon Cherry – Walk Alone [MFM007]

CHERRY, Napoleon - Walk Alone

Napoleon Cherry is perhaps not the unknown name that Music From Memory excels at celebrating but the Philadelphian musician’s releases are certainly suitably hard to find. This career retrospective offers a mix of impossible-to-find tracks, many from his deliciously rare 1990 debut full-length, and previously unheard cuts. It portrays Cherry as a master of warm, evocative, Balearic soul and lo-fi synthesizer funk, whose analogue-rich releases were always out-of-step with the musical trends developing around him. Crucially, all 10 of these tracks are superb, making Walk Alone yet another essential Music From Memory purchase.

Marvis Dee – EP 1: Sailing Over Alpha Moon [DREAMS001]

Marvis Dee opens the newly varnished In The My Dreams imprint with a boogie-led 5-track EP of late-night 80’s house and slow groove-soaked beats. Drawing from the magical influence of the conga-a-plenty TR-727 drum machine along with stomach rumbling basses and glistening synth romanticism conjured from the same machine. Sailing Over Alpha Moon is the first in a 3 EP series exploring these ideas, machines and the nostalgic attachment to things we have once experienced but may not remember. Trapped solely in the memories of others, but returning in our dreams.

Magnetic Soul – Summer Love [DHND002]

Essential 4 track EP of deep disco and summer soul, boogie house and steady groovin funk edits. All tracks are given Magnetic Souls expert disco dub treatment focusing on grooves, added presence and beefed up bottom end for a solid dance floor feel. The A side enters the spacious tropical House vibes of Summer Love and the delightful slow building soul strings and vocal of Universal Love. The B side hits first with some low slung, raw funk grooves with added brass stabs and leaves us on psychedelic soul funk, la Gil Scott of Cold Outside.

Japan Blues – Stoned Bird [BH023]

Given the undoubted quality of Howard Williams’ first release for Berceuse Heroique under the Japan Blues moniker – the superb Brasserie Heroique Edits Volume 2 – you’d expect this second 12″ for Kemal’s imprint to be equally inspired. It is, of course, with Williams’ digging deep in his near bottomless crates of obscure Japanese releases for inspiration. He begins with “Spurned My Colour”, a delightfully jaunty and cheery fusion of chiming synthesizer melodies, broken electro drums and sampled vocal stabs. He goes dense and tribal on “Stoned Bird”, brilliantly cutting up, manipulating and rearranging a killer, African-inspired percussion track. As for closer “Beak”, it expertly joins the dots between wonky, undulating live percussion and the weighty pulse of contemporary techno, via some thrilling backwards drum hits.

La Mecánica Popular – Noche Triler [NYCT7023]

LA MECANICA POPULAR - Noche Triler

La Mecánica Popular takes to the night for a much anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed, self-titled album. This special edition single features a natural modification of their signature psychedelic style – a time capsule of 1970s Afro-Peruvian roots gone American Rock & Soul. Noche Triler (Thriller) takes the form of an uptempo instrumental stunner, a unique combination of styles from guaracha and cumbión, and a refreshingly thrilling flip of Michael Jackson’s iconic masterpiece. Already a staple in the band’s live performances, Mótame En La Tormenta (Riders On The Storm) transforms the Doors’ cowboy-jazz road saga into a brilliantly versioned Amazonian cumbia, a beautifully dark and shadowy trip into the heart of la selva.

Moon B – Measure Pleasure [PULP005]

The title track ”Measure Pleasure” has that buldging funk bass lying underneath some spacey pads and a great rhythm track. Golden Ivy’s version of the title track is emphasizing on the rhythm even more by adding bursting FX and obese kickdrums. Moon B’s Nada Clouds (A3) is a positive yet exotic journey which should be excellent for summer gig’s on rooftops anywhere in the world. For the B1 Moon B continues with the percussion laden ”PV Hills”, this bit has those signature chord switches and vibe changes, that are creating a very melancholic atmosphere throughout. British master of all things melodic ”Fudge Fingas” flips the original completely, making it more streamlined with just a hint more power.

A Band Called Flash – Mother Confessor [FVW002]

Some proper jazz funk here. Ron Trent executive produced EP that reminds of bands like Atmosfear. Inspired by the Jazz Funk elements of UK outfit Atmosfear and the alternative Disco sounds of Dinosaur L, presented here on this EP are five tracks that embrace the energy of live dance music. Reminiscent of the early 80s Boogie sound, A Band Called Flash will surely capture the attention of the more eclectic, global dance floor.
