VA – Network EP [ANDERTRAXX002]

Ander-Traxx is back with more supremely crafted tracks from label head Alex-Ander. This E.P definitely has a strong low-end swing to it, and there’s a subtle rawness gathering in the heart of all the productions here. This is probably best exemplified in the tough soul of Borrowed Identity’s “Reflection”: reminiscent of some of the less aggressive U.R cuts of the past. In fact, all the original tracks presented here have that elusive touch, one that is actually rather hard to convey in writing. “Broken Tape” by Alex-Ander is a leisure-pace stomper worthy of the Fit catalogue, that gives us one of the most syrupy basslines we’ve heard around these parts in a while Slowburn’s “Dermopad” brings abstract elements to a righteous groove: well-implemented Chicago/Detroit influences, unafraid to introduce new sound palettes to a heavily aped style. For remix duties, main man Meschi returns after his appearance on Ander-Traxx 001, putting his solid sound signature on “Broken Tape”, showing us once again his deft talent for structure and ability to tickle the ivories.

Paul Mitchell – An Expedition [TABR016]

As a trusted source of high-grade leftfield analogue electronics, the Tabernacle label is at it again with the shimmering wares of Paul Mitchell. An Expedition explores various approaches to ambient and beatless compositions through decaying synthesisers, and it’s quite astounding just how well realised these pieces are. Moving ever forwards with a dynamism that seems suited to soundtrack work, the complexity and accomplishment of all four tracks of mournful machine soul is undeniable. From lingering pads to expressive arpeggios, this EP runs the gamut of engrossing classical electronica, all the while keeping you hooked on where the instrumental tale will head next.

Meschi – Rural Transmissions [BOE018]

Boe presents one of the UK’s rising stars on the underground house music scene in Meschi. Meschi is also famed for his live analogue jam sets full of action and improvisation. The opening track “Walker” is a modern industrial piece, drenched in cavernous reverb and cushioned by rich bass frequencies. “Long Days” is a pumping Chicago techno cut with a smooth but punchy 808 kick and gritty fuzzy bass filling up that lower spectrum. Snappy hi hats and claps, melodic pads and strings fill up those emotive sequences taking the listener back to late 80s Chicago and loving every second. “The Ghost (vinyl only)” is a quality DJ cut in the Chicago vibe with a bouncing square bass and tight 707 percussion.
