LSD – Process [OTON109]

This debut single from previously unseen outfit LSD is remarkable for a number of reasons, not least the fact that the trio is made up of legendary UK techno producers Luke Slater, Steve Bicknell and Dave Sumner AKA Function. Given their collective history of making thumping, mind-altering techno, you’d expect Progress to be both heavy and trippy. That’s certainly what you get from opener “Process 1”, where psychedelic electronics and cascading, otherworldly noises rise above an armour-plated techno groove. They push the envelope even further on “Process 2”, a track blessed with restless cymbal lines and weird, off-key electronics. In comparison, the similarly intense “Process 3” seems deep and woozy, though the incessant, 1990 style bleeps and “LFO” style synths guarantees a suitably hallucinogenic feel throughout.

Peter Van Hoesen – Nine At The Beginning [T2X030]

Time To Express marks its 30th release, presented by label founder Peter Van Hoesen. The Belgian producer takes up the opportunity to expand upon his previous work on the Coast To Coast EP. No longer exclusively restricted to straight 4/4 rhythms, Van Hoesen’s music investigates hybrid, broken grooves infused with a clear sense of spatial sonic awareness. This is made clear with the first two tracks, Towards Manifestation and Shapeshifting. On the second half of the EP Van Hoesen launches two solid techno cuts, shifting from dense bassline work (Concrete Variation) to percussive, shuffling grooves (Fox Tactics).

Planetary Assault Systems – Deep Heet Vol. 4 [MOTE050]

This new set of four highly concentrated cuts shows how effective Planetary Assault Systems can be at fueling the imagination by fusing together rhythmic and incidental elements into a unified, animated meshwork, without even a prominent melody to help out. Deep Heet Vol. 4 also showcases Slaters aptitude for choosing just the right moments to deviate from a steady groove.

Industrialyzer – Analog Planet [SW121]

Ricardo Rodrigues hasn’t been active as Industrialyzer for some years, but if there was ever an occasion to revisit the uncompromising techno alias, a release on Damon Wild’s legendary Synewave label must surely be it. The Portuguese artist goes in on “Analog Planet” with fearsome intent, serving up that Robert Hood-flavoured mechanized, weaponised loop goodness that gets the business end of the night shaking the way it should. “Multiple Walls” is a funkier affair with a playful organ line, but then it’s back to the darkside with the devilish “Orbit X”, rounding out an EP of no-nonsense techno like momma used to make.

Oscar Mulero – Grey Fades To Green – Disc 2 [WU026LPDISC2]

‘Grey Fades To Green’ is the first album Oscar Mulero has released under his own name, after two acclaimed LPs under the moniker Trolley Route. This is the second part of the album. ‘Road To Pleasure’ is in the same vein. Out of this world drum programming, scientific labours on the synths and again a complex and mutant arrangement for this floor filler. ’46 (re-work)’ and ‘Repeater’ are the soundtrack to a post Blade Runner futuristic city, where everything is hidden under the acid fumes and the sunlight has never been seen. The sound of asteroids falling on a deserted city. Pure techno from outer space.
