Ben Sims & Kirk Degiorgio – Machine [M001]

New label by Ben Sims and Kirk Degiorgio. Entitled, appropriately enough, Machine, the EP sees Degiorgio deliver the deep melodicism of “Machine Theme”, while Sims contributes one of his typically twisted productions in the shape of “Metal Works”, an alienating slice of prickly techno. To round it off, Sims remixes “Machine Theme”, concentrating on a tough 909 rhythm.

Basic Soul Unit – Swept Up / Mindstorm [NONPLUS020]

https://i0.wp.com/imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS460883-01A-MED.jpg

Basic Soul Unit gets rugged and nasty for Boddika’s Nonplus+ stable. The offset and grubby bruk drums of ‘Swept Up’ could easily be mistaken for an A Made Up Sound production, but there’s a warmer Detroit spirit at play which signifies the best of the Basic Soul Unit’s work and marks this up there with his finest. On the other side, ‘Mindstorm’ brews tense strings, escalating chords and roiling acid on a swung 4/4 flex, proper dangerous styles.

Cheap & Deep – Rides Again [MC001]

This inaugural release on Modular Cowboy features brand new material from Cheap & Deep (a.k.a. Jay Ahern) alongside two remixes of “Words, Breaths and Pauses,” a track originally released as a limited edition 12” via Berlin’s Hard Wax shop. The remixes come courtesy of Norman Nodge as well as duo Jonsson/Alter. The release also marks Cheap and Deep’s return to the scene, with the new track “Beautiful,” a modern take on the Chicago acid house tradition, featuring vocals by Crissy Liu with additional production by Morgan Packard.

JT Stewart – Ophelia [EVR007]

Best known for his releases across Bunker, Delsin, W.T. Recordings and more under the shark loving $tinkworx moniker, US producer JT Stewart is retaining the Drexciyan themes that ran through that recent 12inch while reining in some of the dread filled textures that permeated its every pore in favour of a more classicist take on the Detroit Utopian techno vision.

Pär Grindvik- Wyatt ARP [STHLMLTD024]

“It’s been four years since my last own EP on Stockholm LTD. The main reason for this is that I have been surrounded by music that has inspired me much more than my own. This EP was written and produced with strict narrow frames and a huge amount of frustration. I was tired of waiting for the inspiration to kick in, then suddenly it appeared with a strength that I havent felt for long time. Im now curious for more. While sketching the title track, “Wyatt Arp”, I couldnt get Detroit legend, Terrence Dixon, out of my mind. Terrence is a long time hero of mine, and an artist that always stays on the true side of what we do while most of us occasionally leave our paths. I had to ask him to do a rework.” / Par Grindvik

Go Hiyama – Arc One [TOKEN023]

Go Hiyama returns to Token.‘Arc One’ contains 3 tracks, each with a different timbre. ‘Farnsworth House’ focuses on hazy atmospherics over a stomping drum pattern, while ‘Dymaxion Map’ is a more of an instant heavy hitter with punishing percussion. ‘Fallingwater’ builds slowly over a tough yet sophisticated off beat rhythm. Tension grows while the haunting noisy synths lead to a thrilling breakdown, after which it kicks back in ferociously.

Tobias. – Freeze [TON057]

Hypnotic Berlin techno by Tobias. on Ostgut Ton. Freeze is a darkly shining jewel that scoops its hypnotic energy from a rolling synth- sequence. Charged by repetition, Perfect Sense has a similar tractive force, but turns the inward looking, dark mood of the A-side into a subtly euphoric, outgoing direction.
