Durant – The Dove Ultimatum [VVR005]

Vae Victis can’t hide their love and passion for raw house and techno. On this 5th release there is another fine selection of hybrids between styles perfectly expressing their love for genre bending music. Durant exists out of a small collective of producers with main roles for Steve Murphy, Die Roh and Lucretio. The Dove Ultimatum, a 4 tracks ep of punchy analogue electronic music. On the a-side lay General Motors and At Ten, 2 broken beat electro techno tracks a la Drexciya showing the hardest and most experimental side of the project. While on the flip the trio bring things on a housier field, though staying loyal to the a-side vibe by delivering 2 dark and obsessive raw house tracks.

Die Roh – Van Draft EP [VVR003]

Cover art - Die Roh: Van Draft EP

New release and new debut on Vae Victis, this time from the italian duo Die Roh. Three original tracks plus an additional remix from Uk rising star Tessela. An ep with emotional, warm, percussive but spacey Detroit inspired tracks, where drums and pads are fused together in a one take madness arrangement. Ranging from Dupstep inspired to the rawer side of techno. All pure analogue tracks recorded without a computer to give them a lively edge.

Nightjars – Nocturnal EP [VVR002]

Vae Victis second release with apparent newcomer(s) Nightjars taking the reins but still maintaining the philosophy of analogue processes and hybrid styles. The concept is further crystallised here with two distinct sides to the record; starting with the ‘raw’ side, “Thing Movin On” steps and shudders in a sparse fashion, using very little percussion besides a kick and rimshot playing against a looped synth refrain and a purposefully distorted vocal sample. “Heavy” however fares far better with some nasty processing, as a mean acidic bassline rubs up against razor sharp hats in belting fashion. The more melancholic material in Nightjars’ repertoire has been wisely saved for the ‘clean’ side, starting with the plush finish of “Left People”. After that ambiguous exercise, “Everynight” positively shines for its focus and dynamics. While there’s no greater complexity at work in the music, the pace and flow of the track feels far more engaging, not least when the vintage garage-house bassline comes in.
