Scuba – This Is For You (Luke Slater Long Version) [HF054I]

The musical exchange between Paul Rose (Scuba) and Luke Slater began last summer when the Hotflush boss put his touch to Slater’s 1997 classic ‘Love’, dedicating it to London’s Kings Cross raving institution Bagleys, where he first heard the track. Slater’s gift back to Scuba is similarly stirring, taking his hand to the glistening This Is For You’, an early 2020 highlight. The ‘Luke Slater Long Version’ serves as a proper electronic jam session charting a course from dubby techno climes, to ecstatic string-laden builds, jazzy introspection and dreamy pads over a thrilling 22 minutes.

For his take on ‘Test Tubes’, Hammer formulates a steady groover for the after hours.

SCB – Caibu [HFLP013]

‘Caibu’ is Paul Rose’s first album as SCB. The album builds on material from the ‘Below The Line’, ‘Old Media New Society’, and ‘Engineered Morality’ EPs which explored a fictional narrative in which a hypothetical timeline is corrupted by a climate-related disaster. The title of the album itself refers to an imagined surgical procedure where cognitive ability is augmented through transplant from one brain to another. As such, ‘Caibu’ invites the listener to forge their own ideas on the development of society in the context of crisis.

SCB – Old Media New Society [HF047]

Scuba drops another four cuts as SCB on Hotflush Recordings this December. Paul Rose first launched his SCB moniker in 2010, going on to appear on labels like Ostgut Ton, Aus Music and Nonplus until 2014. This year saw the pioneering British producer revisit his darker alias with a dystopian themed release on Hotflush – he now returns with four more twisted and ominous productions.

SCB – Below The Line [HF044]

Scuba refocuses his SCB project with ‘Below the Line’, coming on Hotflush Recordings. ‘Below The Line’ inaugurates a fictional timeline of events set in a hypothetical future. A climate-related disaster acts as a catalyst for a complete overturn in society, the repercussions of which will be explored subsequently.

Trevino – Slide Away [HFT049]

Marcus ‘Intalex’ Kaye marks his first notch as Trevino on the Hotflush bedpost with a plucky four-track EP, wearing all the stripes that an artist of his experience and versatility has earned. Kaye’s four-to-the-floor productions as Trevino have always possessed a latent sheen from the dynamic world of drum and bass where he first made his name. Here it’s evident in the impeccably balanced mix of lead track, ‘Slide Away’, where forlorn melody is driven as much by bass as it is by liquid chords. The tempo is upped on ‘Mosaic’ – a techno record that follows an uplifting path – and on Desecrate it’s in fifth gear with a bass line that rolls and grows and bangs and rolls. The high-speed, echo chamber dub of ‘Jungle Love’ rounds off an EP of notable range.

Sigha – Living With Ghosts [HFLP009]

Cover art - Sigha: Scene Couple

Sigha a.k.a James Shaw confidently returns to Hotflush with his heavily anticipated debut LP, ‘Living WIth Ghosts’. For this offering he presents twelve impressive techno and ambient productions and fuses his love of classic UK techno with the contemporary sound that currently pulses through Berlin’s Berghain. Since his 2009 debut on the label, Sigha has organically shifted further and further into the straight 4/4 realm of techno, embracing the subterranean, darker soundscapes of his new production homebase, Berlin. However, hiding under all that bass, one can still hear the whisper of many long forgotten shoegaze numbers. Years of playing guitar in London bands defined Sigha’s musical start and gave him an ear for the emotive. He was able to merge both worlds after quite literally stumbling across techno by chance, igniting his love of electronic music.

Sepalcure – Eternally Yrs [SEP002D]

Cover art - Sepalcure: Eternally Yrs

Sepalcure follow up last year’s critically acclaimed LP on Hotflush Recordings with a new EP featuring remixes from Kevin McPhee and Trevino (a.k.a. Marcus Intalex), alongside one previously released album cut and one original track. ‘Eternally Yrs’, originally featured on the LP, makes another appearance on side A, followed up by Trevino’s (Intalex’s moniker for his techno and house projects) upbeat and melodic remix of ‘Hold On’. On the flip, Toronto rising star McPhee turns the classic house sounds of ‘The One’ into a crackly, technodriven subbass tune. Finally, the emotive ‘Don’t Cry’ hits hard with the trademark staccato bass and processed vocals that Sepalcure have come to be known for.

Lastly, “Change”, a production that smartly melds classic house grooves with industrial techno, demonstrates Locked Groove’s rhythmic finesse and long-term promise as an artist.
