VA – Tanbou Toujou Lou: Meringue Kompa Kreyol Vodou Jazz & Electric Folklore From Haiti 1960-1981 [OSTP001]

Between the 1960s and 1980s, experimentation and electric reinterpretation of traditional rhythms was rife, along with the sophisticated balancing of a host of influences. There’s the jazz-era instrumentation, brought during the early 20th century American occupation, which introduced horn sections to Haitian ensembles. Cuba, cultural imperator of the Afro-Atlantic and perennial ally of Haiti, imbued Meringue, Mambo, Son, Guajira, Charanga, and a slew of Afro-Cuban styles into the Haitian repertoire. Accordion-driven Colombian Cumbia and Dominican Merengue left their mark. A melting pot of sound was all held together by the countless rhythms, drum patterns, and percussion brought across the Atlantic from Africa, surviving slavery’s violent cultural repression. New York City label Ostinato Records make their impressive debut with this compilation of Haitian Jazz and Electric Folklore spanning two decades from the sixties onwards. Allegedly compiled from an array of private collections and radio archives in Brooklyn and several digging trips throughout Haiti, this 20-track selection offers an intriguing overview of the country’s musical diversity in this period.

Les Pythons de la Fournaise – SLP! [CATALP022]

Exquisit Franco-Creole supergroup Les Pythons de la Fournaise (named after the great volcano on the Reunion island) are rewarding us with their 2nd effort, ”Salut Les Pythons !”. More songs, more groove, more emotion in this exciting long-player where the band show they not only can compose amazing tracks and develop their interpretation of classic Sega-Lontan (typical music genre from Reunion, Mauritius and surrounding islands); but also open their sound to broader, yet specific influences, ranging from 60’s/70’s psychedelia to Eastern harmonies or African rhythms. In this LP the work on vocals is stunning; the 2-female duet in ”Maloya Ton Tisane” is a delight, as well as Reunion-native Rene Cadet’s emotion in songs like ”Pardon” . The combination between percussion and drums is extremely tight, yet supple and true to the unique groove of Sega music. Tracks like ”Ton Ti Gueul Rose” are a pure expression of the band’s inventivity – merciless Arp synthesizer and electric guitar galopping through a frenetic rhythm. Produced by the Catapulte team, this LP also benefits from a beautiful screen-printed artwork with a hand- glued photograph, different for each Vinyl copy – a unique object!

Jacob Mafuleni & Gary Gritness – Atuka Mondhoro 808 [NNR004]

The new 12’’ release from Nyami Nyami records teams up mbira maestro Jacob Mafuleni from Zimbabwe and electro-funk producer Gary Gritness from Franc. Jacob Mafuleni was Chiwoniso’s sideman on vocals and mbira on the label’s acclaimed first release ‘Zvichapera’. He recorded two new tracks in Harare with his wife Martha Thom on vocals and the traditional percussion ocho. Gary Gritness added 808 rhythms and sounds keeping the natural flow of the songs without cutting or sampling the original music. He intuitively produced the talent of Jacob’s mbira ceremonies rhythmic patterns on his TR 808 drum machine. This natural and respectful collaboration resulted in two already classic ‘afro techno’ tracks Atuka Mondhoro 808 and Chiconi 808.

VA – Murray CY Edits [KH004]

In a world where everything is relative, this may well be the final nail in the truth’s coffin. From the past to the present and the present to the past, of stories forgotten and to be told. Murray, labelboss from the great Contort Yourself label, created a library full of edited (un)forgotten cassette material from the first part of the 80’s. This compilation features Die Form, Fan Tan, Nocturnal Emissions, AGem, Beats Per Minute and Parazite: tracks to take you back to the future on the modern day dancefloor.

Retrograde Youth – Earth Disorders Part 1 [RAM-X-08]

Raw electronix all the way from Medellin, Colombia. It’s Retrograde Youth making his debut on Radio Matrix. By serving us three different kind of tunes, he shows us he is definitely an artist to keep your eyes and ears focused on. Where the first track shows his more melodic side with a grimy twist, the darkness really starts to unfold on the flip. ‘Love Fantasy’ will fill the room and leaves no escape with its haunting bassline, flanged hihats and Earth shattering leads. And on the B2, ‘No Time’ is the one for the dark basements, straight up acid for the tough kids! And this is only part 1…

Mirror Man – Blood Is Truth [RHYTHM010]

Double artist debut on Bio Rhythm, delivering its darkest release so far. Despite all corporate techno gentrification rises Mirror Man, from the ashes of what once was this dirty dystopian hardcore heaven, and he’s a mean motherfckr who has been battering us with his haunting dj mixes already for a while. On the flip the pleasure gets even darker with satanist West Coast act ‘Leaders Of The Wild Hunt’ on remix duties.

Marco Segreti – Elisabetta [BAP036]

The long fabled ‘Elisabetta’ project, conceived by Giuseppe Alcheri, scored by Marco Segreti and eventually cancelled entirely by shady producers has long been lamented by fans of Italian Cinema and Disco aficionados alike. ‘Elisabetta’ was to be a return to Alcheri’s erotic thriller roots after (what some may consider talent wasted in) the Euro-Crime genre of the late 70s. Though, despite the predictable trappings of previous efforts, Alcheri’s flair for stylised dramatics and profound statements on the human condition bubbled under the surface, even in films such as “Legge Rotto” and “Sono Unica Difesa di Questa Citta”, but it was the melancholic power of early hits such as “Angelo Della Pelle” or “Pianto Vergine” that serious fans were crying out for. All of which was to be delivered with ‘Elisabetta’ which promised to be his most ambitious and emotional film in years. Concerning a writer driven to suicide by a lost love, told mostly through typewriter monologues, conversations with “Little Grey”, a pigeon and late night cruises through the discotheques of the mid 1980s, ‘Elisabetta’ was to be an epic poem on the nature of love and fidelity, sadly lost much like the lover in the film. Marco Segreti’s credentials should need no introduction, originally the drummer and leader of “Bruciando Roma” a group of anarcho-session musicians, playing on many 70s disco hits, the synthesizer revolution of the 1980s allowed him to break out into independence. Dripping with vintage reverbs and mourning melodies, the soundtrack, presented here for the first time ever is all that remains of this remarkable project.

San Giovanni Bassista – Don’t Go [BAP077]

Initially released by Materiali Sonori in 1985, San Giovanni Bassista’s ‘Don’t Go’ EP embodies what made the alternative italo disco scene of Florence so thrilling. Fresh, packed with humor and ahead of its time in so many ways, these three tracks are thoroughly modern and are definitely still dancefloor burners. Famous for ‘Don’t Go’, it did not take long for the audience to fall in love with the other two tracks of the EP: ‘Summer Sweat’ and ‘Hot Socks’. To pay hommage to his dear friend Claudio Bonaiuti, who passed away suddenly, Alexander Robotnick re-released the EP in digital format on his very own Hot Elephant Music label in 2010. Fast forward to 2016 Bordello A Parigi is pleased to bring you this release on our beloved vinyl, remastered with refreshed artwork. All in cooperation with mister Robotnick himself who also supplied us an edited version of Hot Socks. Sit down, lay back and enjoy the sun while drinking a cocktail on a beautiful beach and mumbling the silly blend of English and Spanish lyrics.

Franz Scala – Discoteca Paradiso [BAP075]

Spinning gold is pretty difficult. But that’s what Franz Scala does. Simple when you know how, and this Italian does. Three tracks of pure italo sunshine. Snapping beats and cocktail chords meet on the dancefloor for ‘Discoteca Paradiso’, sleek synthlines keeping time as the pair turn and twirl. ‘Gun Theory’ works in moonlit. Clean drums are sullied by dripping keys, a cigarette locked in the teeth of this after hours affair. And the lights aren’t up yet, Scala has one more floor filler up his sleeve. Pulsing rhythms say there still hope, she’s style out there; but the bitter sweet melodies disagree. A lilting heartbreaker, in the elegant form of ‘Riflessi’.

Axodry – You [DE125]

Axodry was the duo of Andreas “Talla 2XLC” Tomalla and Ralf ”Ra/Hen” Henrich, who formed in Frankfurt, Germany in 1982. The two met at City Music record store where Talla 2XLC worked, supplying the local DJ scene with dance 12”s. From 1984 to 1991 they released six maxi 12” singles. Both members were leading figures in the European electronic scene during the 80’s and 90’s, forming bands like Bigod 20, Tribantura, Micro Chip League, Moskwa TV, Pluuto and Robotiko Rejekto. In 1988 they released the maxi 12” single “You” on ZYX Records/Combeat. Influenced by Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and John Foxx, the duo crafted high impact Industrial, Synth Pop and Electronic Body Music. Their basic set up for recording at RaHen’s home studio was a Moog Rouge, Roland SH-101, Teisco synthesizer, Linn Drum and Fricke sequencer. Ra/Hen performed dramatic vocals, which tell of a lost love found in dreams. Included here are the Beauty & The Beat Mix and the Beasty Dub Mix from the 1988 single. On the flip is the Razormaid Remix, performed by Art Maharg and Joseph Watt, that originally appeared on the ”Welcome To The Technodrome” compilation in 1989. Also included is “Mechanic”, originally released in 1991 as the B-side for their final single “Losing You”.

Bogdan Drazic / Daniel Kyo – Black Gloves II [GD017]

Black Gloves II (the sequel to the Vercetti & Maiovvi split from 2012) comes roaring from the grave, like what if Satan himself had a neat motorbike that was on fire and went fast. Real fast. Heading up the release is newcomer Bogdan Drazic, crunched up horn and elephant blaring freak-house and EBM, perfect for Zombie clearance raids. In the Amazon. At night. The gates of hell are open and I couldn’t possibly describe what’s climbing out. Last but by no means least is the Valencian hero Daniel Kyo, perhaps the true heir to the throne of the real Sonido De Valencia, spaced out and cosmic with layers of emotion and sinister atmospherics. They sleep, we live.

Alessandro Adriani – Guerilla Warfare [PBD002]

Mannequin Records’ Alessandro Adriani is up next for Pinkman’s White Label series and the flavor is unapologetically wave. Melodies ghost, whisper and finally roar as the Italian pushes the parameters of darkened electronics. Croaking samples and brutish percussion coiling to a bitter end.

Cute Heels – Third Skin EP [DE123]

Cute Heels is the solo project of Victor Lenis, a contemporary artist living in Barcelona, Spain. He grew up in Bogotá, Columbia during the 1990s, surrounded by the radial punk scene. “Third Skin” is a 4-track EP that connects the dots between Detroit techno, early Chicago house and Belgium electronic body music. Inspired by equal parts Liaisons Dangereuses, Drexciya and Black Devil Disco Club. On the A-side are two fresh compositions recorded in 2015. “Third Skin” kicks things in a metallic EBM funk with a pounding bottom end. “Lipstick Information” takes the listener on a dark, psychedelic and twisted journey through thrillingly intense arpeggiations. On the flip we present two remixes. The first is from Steffi and the second remix comes from Michel Amato aka The Hacker.

Hekkla – Sunset Strip EP [02AM]

HEKKLA - Sunset Strip

02AM is an 4 track EP by the young producer Hekkla from Eindhoven. The first track is ‘Sunset Strip’, a slowly build house track that moves like the last waves of heat at the end of a hot summers day, walking home feeling satisfied, all ready for the night. ‘Saturday Morning Sentimentality’ is a hard to pinpoint track that sounds like the bastard son of a trio between the melancholic side of Cyndi Lauper, Alphaville and the echoes of a cheesy saturday morning cartoon theme song from the late 80’s. On the other side ‘Memories of Tau Ceti’ feels like tumbling into space with only the memories left of a good time on an alien world, accelerating faster and faster but still enjoying it, even though you know that the vacuum of space will eventually kill you. Finishing with the hardest track ‘No Math’, because, boys and girls, it’s no math.

Mister Ho & Heap – Feeling Hopeful [ESP045]

Mister Ho & Heap close their eyes and float downstream. This is their second offering for the ESP Institute. On side A, Feeling Hopeful is a straight-ahead burner comprised of minimal thuds, bumps, honks, blips, bleeps and bloops—a harmonious arrangement of percussive elements and soaring synth chords that feels both slow and fast paced, sunset and sunrise hour, island back roads and traffic in metropolis. On side B, Gis Gis explores a similar notion of contrast, setting a the scene with a driving mechanical hi-hat that never dips below the selection of luscious melodies—a cha-cha bassline, breezy chords and a slippery lead hook that collectively invite us all for poolside Pin?a Coladas at the Ho & Heap villa. These two songs were conceived in the year of the monkey.
