The eight release on Hizou Deep Rooted Music comes from Chicagoan Spirit Of The Black 808. Title-track Infroduction is a shuffling, slo-mo jam laden with atmosphere and groove in the mould of the great Mahogani Music and KDJ, a little more Detroit by design perhaps then, whereas by contrast Electronic Love is downright and unashamedly classic Chicago. Layers of melody and a super-deep groove are stamped all over I FunKd Up, whilst ethereal uptempo tool Rough Joint completes the package.

Inouno is 7 minute house groover that nods to the classic house sound of the 90s, while keeping it modern, soulful and funky.
VA – Girl From Venus EP [BBR009]
Benedikt Frey heads this latest offering from the Batti Batti label, teaming up with jonas.san for “Girl From Venus”, which pair the former’s signature raw drums with the latter’s outtakes of muted trumpet. Complementing this, Batti Batti’s own Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana lay down a typically deep atmospheric houser with a few twists and hidden melodies in the shape of title track “Tribal Roots” and the 12″ is further embellished by productions from debutant Lars Behrenroth and Mexican duo Romeo C & Alhan G.

The hypnotic and elegant minimalism of “3.26.2013@11.40pm” harmonic complexity and surrealism jazz of “11.18.2013@1:41am” and “5.26.2012@5.59pm” and the sonic and spatial reverie “12.1.2008@5.48pm” are the four tracks of the EP. John Heckle – Wet Noises [MNSX003]
The secret to John Heckle’s impressive productivity is probably his admirable commitment to jamming with analogue hardware. Certainly, there’s a loose, all-action immediacy to this outing on Midnight Shift. Tinged by acid throughout, and with more than a few nods to both Detroit futurism and vintage British “intelligent techno” (most obvious on the early Orbital style, stargazing shuffle of closer “Frozen Planet”). The title track itself is particularly potent, offering a surging combination of stomping techno drums and intoxicating acid lines, while the bleaker “Alpha Deux” sounds like the musical foretelling of some kind of post-apocalyptic future.

VA – Events At The Fatal Party EP [CY002]
Contort Yourself returns with “Events at the Fatal Party” which comes over more as a description than a title, brimming with a bubbling sense of tension and fear. Hamburg duo Fallbeil kick things off in impressive style with a crunchy acid monster which twists and turns followed by two killer proto-techno cuts from legendary French industrial band Die Form from their 1985 tape Hurt. Here we find ourselves in a unsettling scenario with metallic voices scowling over clanging machines and guitar feedback in an unhinged way. The mysterious Slugbug starts the flip with “Goback”, a creeping acidic beast moving unstoppably forward as a reverberating voice ripples throughout. Any calm is then shattered by IBM a.k.a. Jamal Moss whose remix of Die Form hammers home a tough seven minutes of mangled synths, bubbling acid and thundering drums.

LAB.OUR 05 showcases tracks by 4 different artists, displaying a diverse spectrum of deep sounds. Lab.our Music co-owner J-UL’s first ever release, Tempest, is a moody, beat driven track with layered synths. Maxwell Church returns to the label with Elastic Ban, a rolling rhythmic journey with tense strings. Newcomer, and Toronto native, Xavier Gonzalez drops Praise, a dancefloor burner with a barrage of beats and energetic vocal snippits. Last but not least, veteran Chicago Skyway brings us Vase Mix 3, an atmospheric and melodic jackin’ track.
