Pronounced Ay One Four, the A14 label is a new offshoot of Blackest Ever Black dedicated to issuing everything from “serpentine breakbeat reductions to straight-up terminator trax” in the 12″ format. The debut release comes from December, the recently adopted alias of Parisian producer Tomas More whose earlier material for Correspondant and Items & Things is far removed from the music he now makes. If you picked up the December tape for Where To Now? issued back in August you should have an idea of the abstract textures More now deals in, and there’s something a bit Beau Wanzer about the wave-indebted techno of lead track “In Advance Of The Broken Arm”. Proceedings get a bit more bugged out on the flip with “Collapse” accurately summed up as “khat-crazed small hours death-dub” by the label.

The Lobster Theremin label is finally ready to make the move to the full-length format. Interestingly, this first LP – a double album, no less – comes from a largely unheralded source, former Vancouver resident Chicago Jim (AKA Space Jim). Chicago Jim replicates the contents of his self-released 2012 cassette of the same name, bringing his blend of Larry Heard-inspired analogue deep house and stargazing ambience to vinyl for the first time. With nods to Heard’s recently reissued Alien LP, early Transmat and Virgo Four style acid house, it’s an analogue-only set – recorded mostly using vintage kit – that ebbs and flows with great emotional intent.

Fresh from his outing on Inkswel’s Hot Shot Sounds label, ex UK now Melbourne based artist Paradise Box brings four freeform Nu Groove style excursions to Echovolt, flipping the quintessential house acapella on Reel Nitty Gritty into a Burrell Brothers style banger. The other tracks touch on Virgo Four, Mr Fingers and classic WBMX style hardware soul, making a virtue of idiosyncrasy and showcasing the fallibilities of the human touch. The whole EP harks back to an era where having limited means meant that loose and expressive soulful endeavor was pursued over high production values and rigid conformism.

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem have teamed up to release “Catholic”, the lost opus of disco pioneer Patrick Cowley and Indoor Life vocalist Jorge Socarras. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, “The San Francisco Sound”. “Catholic” is a genre-bending concept album that ranges from minimalistic proto-techno to synth-driven post-punk. It shows a much broader range than any Cowley or Socarras material available and gives a totally new perspective to one of the most inspiring eras in music history. Patrick forges a unique electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, modified guitars, and self-constructed equipment while Jorge’s vocals go from hypnotic to camp, singing about gay love juju and tackling classics by Donovan and Stoller & Leiber.

When Dark Entries reissue Italo-disco records, they tend to be slept-on or long-forgotten gems. That’s certainly the case with International Music Therapy’s “Dancing Therapy”, something of a break dance-era anthem that was popular in underground clubs around its’ 1984 release. The version included here – the ‘Special Remix’ – is undoubtedly the definitive version of the track, and interestingly sits somewhere between New York freestyle and throbbing, arpeggio-heavy Italo-disco. On the flip you’ll find “Love Games”, a track from the I.M.S album not included on the 1984 single.

It would be fair to say that Charlie’s “Spacer Woman” is one of the better-known Italo-disco anthems, which makes it all the more surprising that Dark Entries has chosen to reissue it. This is not a criticism, though; they’ve given Maurice Cavalieri and Giorgio Stefani’s original the remaster treatment, and it sounds even more alien, exciting and oddball as it did back in 1983. The original vocal version – all woozy synths, throbbing arpeggios, wonky beats and typically eccentric vocals – is backed by the Instrumental version, which is the preferred mix of choice for many Italo DJs. If it’s not in your collection already, it should be.

Finally, years of restructure on live recordings and pain staking undulation in the restoration process have lead us to finally accomplish what so many expected wouldn’t happen: an awakening of sagacious spirit: With that being said It’s our distinct honor to present the sonic world of “dimensional space” the highly anticipated debut album from cv313. This album has taken a cosmic eclipse where two events collide for Unison. The culmination of this project lead to synergy, creative experience re-invented and re-imagined, flow of an astral vortex.

Osaka-based Ryo Murakamiis coming with two new tracks on Meakusma, combining the forward momentum of his previous work with his new-found experimental approach. Both tracks play with atmosphere and impact, are essentially slow burners that through Murakami’s subtle play with dynamics and change become incredibly moving and abstracted studies into groove and ambient sound. Cherry on the cake is the Porter Ricks remix, a hazy glow that is as revealing as it is mystifying covers the track, whilst the basis of it is, in the best Porter Ricks tradition, a surprisingly funky twist on the rhythm and bass of the original track.

The Invariants is a brand new label and production project from Amsterdam. The first release contains four tracks recorded in the fall of 2012. The opening track of the debut EP is a wide-open bit of ambient soundscaping. Distant muffled voices, lush pads that stretch and smear in soothing, cerebral ways and sombre synths all make it a magical opener. The A2 is similar in its smooth textures but is underpinned by a warm, rubbery, thudding kick drum that propels things along at an inviting pace. The pads are just as emotive and serene, though, initially sounding insular and sorry for themselves before a little light and optimism does come in in the latter stages. On the flip, B1 is a much slower and lazier affair: crisp but icy hi hats are as far apart as the drums. Rippling chords roll in the foreground and a slowly emerging sense of groove gets fleshed out with richly reverbing claps and rising pads. Seriously moody stuff, the EP gets finished in real style by the deep, whacked out and mid tempo electro groove of the B2. Humid but run through with frazzled synths, there is plenty of pain as well as hopefulness in the tracks The Invariants create. On this evidence, this is a project that knows just how much is enough to really stimulate mind, body and soul.

If you are looking for a massive slab of techno, you won’t find anything released this week that’s as hefty as Aphelion. A triple vinyl box set from Belgian label Token, Aphelion is essentially a primer for the best in contemporary techno, featuring contributions from Surgeon, Rodhad, James Ruskin, Karenn and Planetary Assault System alongside some label regulars. You will have probably already heard “Fixed Action Pattern” from Surgeon, it’s possibly one of this year’s finest techno 12″s, but it’s got some stiff competition here with Ruskin in particularly funked up form on “No Trace”.

VA – Gravitational Push [TEAL009]

Sonic contributions come from two TEAL newcomers A Sagittariun and Matti Turunen, as well as the return of Jared Wilson to the label with a fresh cut of his own. The opening drum break swirls into synth-line and syncopation europhoria on Gravitational Push. The droning bassline cuts a groove in the space-time continuum that’s so deep, it could put some discussions in Geneva to shame. The playful arpeggios of Spice Flow mask the underlying moody pads, resulting in an unusually honest piece of dance music. Flipping the disc reveals a two-track contribution by Matti Turunen. Menacing kicks and synth chirrups begin Substellar Object as a dark chest-rattling piece. However, its sonic frequency emission spectrum eventually widens into a lush composition. When we arrive at the Apoapsis of our sonic orbit, we are met with a stuttering of rhythms and bleeps. An emotional line melody confidently marks the end of our journey.

It’s been some 10 months since the last release from the Austere imprint. Here, the label re-boots with a split EP featuring a variety of sinewy deep house gems. There’s something particularly delicious about Gradul Lashton’s “Summer Solace”, a sweet mixture of darting acid lines, jaunty rhythms and dreamy melodies. Fat Dog’s “All That I Own” is a fluid, bluesy delight – with a little dubbiness about the drums, naturally – while Life Recorder’s “From Above” sounds like a long lost Detroit techno classic – all stargazing pads, intergalactic synth bass and relentless cymbals. Best of all, though, is Arnheim’s “Late Night In The Loft”, a bittersweet fusion of mournful pianos and shuffling, ultra-deep grooves.

Norm Talley – The Palmer Park Project [TSUBA075]

A long and distinguished recording career for the always faithful Norm Talley has been lacking something Tsuba shapes until now, so kudos to Kev Griffiths for coaxing three drops of powerfully deep and danceable house from the Westside Detroiter. Each track here offers a different mood with A-side cut “Mid-Nite Madd-Ness” the peak time burner with classically Detroit house styled cymbal clashes cuing breakdowns, while vamping chords ascend and descend. “Holiday” is the warmer summer house jam with woozy Rhodes on loop, while “One Track Mind” is deep and rhythmic with a sultry vocal to boot.
