Freddy Fresh – 1996 [EAR028]

Freddy Fresh returns on Earwiggle to provides some choice material from the year 1996, remastered and ready for modern consumption. We start with the tunneling acid tour-de-force of ”Abraxas”, that first appeared on Freddy’s ”Analog Space Funk” album on Analog, followed by a similarly spaced out (yet previously unreleased) track of the same period, ”Aerial”. Originally released on Cari Lekebusch’s Hybrid label, ”Logical Grooves 1” is prototype supernatural techno on an almost morbid tip, while ”Barogue” is a classic Freddy Fresh cut to wrap up (fittingly taken from his ”Accidentally Classic” album on Harthouse), where weighty Mr. Fingers style chords play over an epic and deep-building exotic soundscape. ”1996” marks a special snapshot in time – when Freddy Fresh did ‘out there’ techno in a way that no-one else did, techno that we believe will always stand the test of time.

Phuture – Acid Tracks [TX142RED]

Phuture only released a handful of tracks (plus an album a full decade after their debut), but have remained a legendary act in the development of Chicago house for their stomping 1987 single “Acid Trax”, the track that began and defined the acid house sound. The group was formed by DJ Pierre, synthesizer fan Spanky and Herb J in 1985 as a recording entity to produce records for Pierre to mix into his sets at several crucial Chicago clubs. After being turned on to the high-pitched squelch of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer (marketed as a bassline machine for solo guitarists), the trio emerged from the studio with a track they called “In Your Mind”. Ron Hardy previewed the track at his legendary club the Music Box – where it became known as “Ron Hardy’s Acid Track” – and Phuture re-made the cut with production by Marshall Jefferson. Released on Trax Records in 1987, the single created a dividing point between the Chicago sound before and after it, with hundreds of “Acid Trax” imitations flooding the local market. After it caught on in Britain as well, the single soundtracked the wave of club madness which coalesced in the rave movement by the end of the decade.

Type-303 – Sysi EP [SRTX030]

30 releases in and Super Rhythm Trax celebrate with this beautiful record by Finnish producer, Type-303 with an EP that faces off the lushest most uplifting Acid music against the rawest and dirtiest end of the genre. ‘Delays’ sounds almost like an early UR record while ‘Code 808’ is an absolute masterclass in bliss, complete with it’s vocoders, electro drum track and singing 303s. Sandwiched between these two tracks you have the cheeky suggestiveness of ‘Kolkki Crush’ and the outright sleaze of ‘Life In Mono’.

Fear-E – Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place [DE271]

Fear-E makes his Dark Entries debut with ‘Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place’. Fear-E is the moniker of Scott McKay a Glasgow based DJ and producer. ‘Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place’ contains six club-ready tracks to “smash sound systems and illuminate sweaty warehouses.” The title is a reference to a nickname that Glasgow has, coming from Cumbric, means ‘green hollow’ or (dear) ‘green place’. Layering cut-up vocals with warm thumping beats, Scott creates a stripped-back yet deeply jackin’ vibe.

Jared Wilson – Roland Acid Again EP [USR013]

Undersound returns with a four tracker of restless acid sketches with one of our favourite contemporary Detroit producers, Jared Wilson. As the title “Roland Acid Again” suggests, the EP is a homage to the classic synthesizers that defined electronic music. The EP kicks off with “Always Something” and “Roland Acid Again”, where acidic lines are interlaced with signature Roland drums to convey different moods. Side B showcases a more reflective side of Wilson’s sound, with “Peanutbutter Halloween Saltmix” and the more direct “Nov 27” which closes the EP with its squelchy melodies.

Fantastic Man – Solar Surfing [KITJEN009]

Fantastic Man returns to Kitjen with a powerful EP of mind-bending, acid workouts. ‘Solar
Surfing’ is a concise example of the Australian artist’s panache for psychedelically inspired house music with two dance-floor heavy cuts preceding a contemplative, baseline driven slow jam. The hypnotic and fast paced title track locks in and moves ever forward, whilst ‘Native Power’ features the classic sound of Fantastic Man’s 303, coupled cleverly with the sound of an extraterrestrial bird-song. A drop in tempo rounds off the release with ‘Avocado Conception’, an expertly delivered exploration in slow, chugging nostalgia.’

Random XS – Centrifuge [MOS027]

Dutch underground acid-techno act Random XS strikes again with two rugged and authentic dance floor rockers. After a long awaited re-release of their Djax-Up-Beats classic ‘Give Your Body’ last year on Delsin, they return with a pair of fresh and unheard acid jams on the closely related MOS Recordings. Both tracks recorded in the early ’90s, but only recently finalized and improved for heavy club impact. It’s an EP full with gurgling 303 grooves and raw energy in the traditional and energetic Random XS way.
