Veteran of the New York City underground DJ Spider returns after a couple of years on London’s Spinning Plates with more of his idiosyncratic takes on techno with the new four-tracker Enter The Void. On the first side you’ll be entranced by the brooding locomotive chug of ‘Hyperspace Wardance’ which is treated to a swirling and textured rework by the ever reliable Phil Moffa next – a proper back room dub that goes deep. Over on the flip there’s the industrial edged sci-fi menace of ‘Space Aggressor Squadron’ and followed by the atmospheric slow burner ‘Incineration Of Years & Truth’.

Green Village turns to DJ Spider for a new 12 inch. The NYC artist is now a respected member of the Big Apple’s contemporary house and techno wave, and it’s an absolute must for him to be represented on the city’s bubbling scene, especially when he’s up for firing off tunes like “Space Jungle” and Satsang”, two mean, club-minded house bangers with a prominent lower-end. “Divide & Conquer” turns things darker and more ominous thanks to its icy, minimal approach – a cold blend of stripped-back beats and circling bass tones – while “Urantia Of Nebadon” displaces the traditional house framework in favour of a dark, molecular selection of electronic sounds guided by a simple pattern of 4/4 beats.

Green Village presents Village Elders 001, a compilation EP featuring new material from artists who have already flown the flag for GV. The A-side is held down by the Plan B duo of DJ Spider and Dakini9, purveyors of the Metro Area’s dirtiest and deepest house sounds. Spider gets toxic a second time, following his 2013 Instruction drop with ‘Toxic Trace 2’, a thickly layered deep house cut whose seedy percussion underbelly contrasts vividly with the more traditional deep house pads that accompany it. Dakini9’s ‘Lost Paradise’ is dark and mysterious like its title, the hats, trumpets, and vocals emerging in tangled webs of dub effects, a strong follow-up to her dope EP for the label. Disaroen, a duo from Toronto, half of which previously appeared on GV, turns in the most barren of the four tracks, ‘Serious Doorman’, heads-down techno that crackles to life halfway in and an auspicious debut for a promising new group. Last is Nicuri, a rising star whose ‘Ripples of Time’ closes the EP in his signature searching, melodic style.

Berlin operation Killekill continue where they left off with their impressive releases last year, with Genetically Modified Tracks the end product of pairing DJ Spider and Franklin De Costa together. Rhythmically, Spider and De Costa don’t stray far from the 4/4 template but it’s what occurs around it that’s so memorable. It’s no more apparent than on “Buzzsaw” where a sticky wooden block style rhythm is made all the more viscous by the thick bass line, muffled vocals and blurred jazz licks that cloak the channels. Elsewhere “The Unseen” is perhaps the most straight up dancefloor number, underpinned by a sense of impending gloom, which is a sensation shared with the post apocalyptic rumble of opening track “Slithis”.

Every piece has it’s place in the selection & much thought has been put behind them with meaning & intent to invoke higher listening. Spider has worked with some great musicians over the years & added some of their pieces to the mix as well. Sly Scott threw down some amazing Saxophone parts on The opening track “Prison Planet” & he also did some playing on the fifth track “Crack Factory”. The one & only Dub Poet, Infinity gave a dope voice piece to Spider for the eighth track “S O S” & Boyd Jarvis lends a gorgeous keyboard solo on the final cut, “Flee To Agartha”

Chiffre opens with “Tegal E”, boasting strong kicks, intricate percussion, fierce bass lines and a haunting synth lead which introduces the listener to Hakim’s deep cerebral textures, patterns, and rhythms. Up next, a remix of “Nabodani” by DJ Spider takes things to the next level with heartthrob kicks, jazzy percussion loops, and menacing soundscapes. Opening the B-side, we have Murdoc’s remix of “Vatitio”, a smooth rendition of the original featuring winding bass lines, unique synth pads and rhythmic pauses throughout the progression of the track. Concluding the release is the final track, titled “Gangsta Glide”; a strong composition returning us full-circle, back to Hakim’s dreamlike spheres of heightened reality.
