L’Embrasse is a compilation originally released in 1987, less than 50 copies were distributed at the time through local shops and it is a portrayal of a unique and very little known scene, generated in the deep underground milieu of Amsterdam. None of the tracks presented on this album has ever been re-released after the ultra-limited original edition on cassette format appeared. At the time, a dozen different acts were featured: Menko (S.M. Nurse founder), Robbie Horsfall, Peter Van Garderen (Nine Circles founder), Der Rudi, Antonia (Tonny Timmermans), No Honey From These, Incredible Coöp (S.M. Nurse members), Tranquil Eyes, Beatnik Love Affair, Cheiron, Spin & Kokkie and The Male Ego.

Almost forty years later, Frigio is bringing some of their music to a fresh audience, the pioneer proto-techno Spanish band TodoTodo and featuring original music plus killer edits by Juanpablo & Luis Costa. Juanpablo with his extended edit of “Digital Dancer.” A steady kick tethers a tripping mechanical melody, a melody that bubbles and simmers as toms, horns and daring funk collide for this seven minute odyssey into the world of Iberian underground synth. The original version from 81 closes the A, a brief and brilliant piece of proto-techno. The flip is introduced by Catalan Dj, journalist and author of ‘Bacalao’ Historia Oral de la Musica de Baile en Valencia, Luis Costa. Costa re-imagines “Autogas” with his Tool Edit, reshaping the off-kilter keys and future highways and byways of the original. The finale is a true treasure from the annals of time. A live version of “Autogas” from the legendary Rock’Ola club in Madrid, an unreleased work that is as audacious and bold as it was when it was first performed in 1981.

The musical output by Amsterdam trio S.M. Nurse — generated in just three years of activity, 1980 to 1983 — is truly amazing by its volume and quality. The “That’s the Body” EP is their third release on Domestica; a selection of previously unknown tracks and unreleased versions on 12” format. “That’s the Body” (1983) and “On And Off” (1983) are first-ever releases. On side B, there’s new versions of “Mort Automatique” (1981) and “Frutta”(1982), previously found on the now expensive “30th Anniversary: 1980-1983” album, released by Domestica in 2013.

Spain’s Domestica are up to their usual antics, and this time it’s the second instalment of their excellent Domestic Landscape series, a varied and much-coveted collection of perfectly contemporary post-punk and coldwave oddities from the 1980s. We’re in love with every track on here, and we’re not exaggerating, this gear is of the highest calibre, and all very much relevant in a DJ nowadays. Think Optimo in the midst of a smokey, mid-morning set in a dark basement, and you’re almost there. Track upon track of solid gold discofied industrial music. Killer; highly recommended.

Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, or simply known as L.A.S.’s Crime around the digging circles, were an Italian cold wave duo who formed at the tail-end of 1984 and produced a timeless bunch of EP’s and LP’s which have become heavily sought after in the last few years. Luckily, Spain’s excellent Domestica label have herein compiled the very best from the duo, an eleven track showcase of the band’s top productions from the years between 1985 and 1989. As you’d expect, the bulk of the compilation is made up of fast-paced drum machines patters glazed in the era’s melancholic sound, where winding, lonesome vocals glide and wash over the Kraftwerk-style beats. There are even bursts of early electro within, such as the gnarly “Five Lies”, and more experimental moments like “Dark Orris” or the EBM-charged “Flax Girl Room”.

5X0D has always been Mark Phillips and Rob Lawrence since it began in 1981 in Bristol UK. Early influences were many going back to pop, prog and krautrock bands of the early 70s, through punk and new wave to industrial, then later Japanese technopop like YMO.

Around 1980 Menko Konings (eM.) started the Dutch underground formation S.M. Nurse, first together with Jos Jak and later also with Anneke Stempher. S.M. Nurse experimented with collage-like music and were inspired by N.Y.-ultra, disco e.g. The band mainly performed in the Amsterdam ultra-circuit (Oktopus, Paradiso), clubs and discotheques. They were played regularly on the famous radio programmes RadioNome and Spleen and performed live on radio in the villa of the VPRO in Hilversum. They also contributed to the theme cassette Turkish Delight of the label Ding Dong and there was a cassette release on the label Top Tape. At the end of 1983, S.M. Nurse split up.

Having featured on the Non Plus Ultra 1980-1989 Vol.2 released by Domestica earlier this year, the distinct self styled ‘Necro-Pop’ of Funeraria Vergara is covered in greater detail by the Barcelona label with this lovingly presented retrospective of their demos and unreleased works. Covering a two year period from the early eighties, the eight track Despues De Un Dia Antes LP presents the young Burriana based Funeraria Vergara collective as a devilishly fun group dealing high octane synth pop with occultist overtones. Their one true hit “El Difunto” managed to find its way onto a 1984 cassette compilation of Spanish Wave and Punk called N-340 and features here along with a bunch of unreleased demos and a card insert detailing Funeraria Vergara’s curious rise to coin the Necro Pop crown.

The mythical Transedance from UK duo Night Moves is given a much needed official issue by Domestica Records and the Barcelona label have spared no expense. Despite the paucity of Night Moves discography, it’s clear the duo of Michael Guihen and John Davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. Transedance was originally released as a limited 12″ white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of Europe and New York City yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved.

Domestica produce a selection which gathers up and represents part of the original work during the most experimental era of Gary Ramon’s music career. The songs that Gary Ramon edited during the Modern Art era (from approximately 1982 to 1989) were basically from cassettes; most of his music didn’t take off outside of the English ‘Underground’ scene in the 80’s.
