Dubbyman – LA Ciudad Interior [DAS005]

La Ciudad Interior EP was produced by deep Explorer artist Dubbyman. He’s mixing electronic music with jazzy chords and some space spherical grooves, giving us a brilliant mixture of different styles and vocals. It took almost one year to complete this three track EP. Dubbyman has been drawing a lot on musician friends for adding a human touch. He has been blessed with amazing vocals by Bjak, Jenifa Mayanja, Gianluca TheHuge, Sinovuyo Tshomela and Debra Jones-Davis.

As an intermittent feature over at Deep Explorer, Leo Gunn makes his second vinyl appearance for the label appearance with some typically astute deep house ponderings, starting off with the lush undulations of “Dancing With Dreams”. “Come Down” gets into a tripped-out mind state of a different nature with its soulful key progressions, although still very much in that elegant vein championed by Deep Explorer. “Open Spaces” brings equal amounts of wistful atmospherics, although over a slightly more pronounced beat, while “Quiet” sees Dubbyman getting in on a reconstruction that lets cheeky synth flutes amongst other things dart into the blissed-out mix.

VA – Love’s All Right [AMR026R]

Malcolm Moore’s Altered Moods imprint comes through with the self styled “deep as fuq” Loves All Right EP featuring contributions from Dubbyman, Amir Alexander and Mr Done! The well respected Dubbyman marks his debut production on Altered Moods with the sublime “Love’s All Right”- a track naturally brimming with his signature jazzy touches and lolloping beat down groove. It’s complemented by an altogether housier remix from Above Smoke who does a superb job in cloaking elements of Dubbyman’s original production in a hazy sheen deep beneath an infinitely rise rasp of a groove. Turn over and Mr Done! Aka Mr Moore gently rolls out a melange of widescreen chords and shimmering pads over the ever rippling rhythmic snap of drums that drives “Diamond” forward, whilst Amir Alexander wins the prize for the most apt title on “Woozy!” a tightly wound driving house track whose undulating textures will cause travel sickness.

The Golden years EP represents the special tribute that Deep Explorer make to Psychostasia Records, one of the most influential labels of the underground house of this age. The EP opens the fire with Reggie Dokes that plays with the tribal electronics in his completely new song called “Mother Africa” and its exactly what the title suggest, a tribal journey through the machines into the continent. In the same side the EP continues rescuing a lost track from Eric Johnson planned for a new Psychostasia but because the big pause of the label in 2006 the precious rhodes and tribal percussion of “In 2 deep” never saw the light. In the B side we afront the personal tribute that Dubbyman makes to the Psychostasia label creating two remixes but in a different way never seen before; taking samplers from many songs included in the Psychostasia catalogue to create new collage versions from one of the first songs edited in Psychostasia in 2001: the classic “Black thoughts” and “Mother africa” the ultimate song from Reggie Dokes. The first one called “deep in the hole mix” rides the 4×4 rhythm into a neverending deep climax. The “tribute mix” pitch down the tempo in a kaleidoscope of different sounds like a musical collage. Of course that the remixes are a wink to the Psychofans but also is a perfect time to discover the sound …through Deep Explorer….
