Reel By Real’s “Surkit” is a Detroit Techno classic that has gained mythical status since it first appeared on a limited white label release on Juan Atkins’ Metroplex offshoot, Interface in 1990. Giving a spotlight back to this highly sought after 12″ EPM Music teama up with French vinyl specialists, Yoyaku and present this timeless record, remastered and remixed for 2025. In keeping with the track’s early Detroit roots this edition features remixes from Motor City legends Keith Tucker (a.k.a. DJ-K1) and Strand, with added dubplate pressure provided by DnB lynchpin, Calibre. Further remix support also comes from a UK-Detroit triumvirate of EPM’s Oliver Way and Ben Long (Space DJz) and Jon Dixon (UR).

K-1 aka Keith Tucker brings his famously repetitive sounds and rugged electro-funk to ‘On My Computer’, which bumps irresistibly as smeared sci-fi chords set your sights on the future. Add in robotic vocals and supple bass and you have an instant classic. It’s then to the Eastside of the Motor City for DJ Maaco’s ‘The People’ which is just as funky but in totally different ways; his laid-back groove is embellished with lush synth sequences and late-night cool that is topped off by a more seductive male vocal. The second release in the Exit Planet Earth compilation vinyl series features four exclusive tracks designed for space travel, including the first ever collaboration between Keith Tucker of Aux 88 and Carl Finlow. The resulting track ‘Coder’ is an electro masterpiece. The more established electro pairing of Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code hit heavy with ‘Red Cell’ while Voigtmann brings the bass to space with ‘Subtopia’. The record is rounded off beautifully by Cignol with Detroit infused string sections and harmonies on his ’51D’ track.

The enigmatic Optic Nerve aka Keith Tucker returns with the aptly named Detropolis 12″ on Anthony “Shake” Shakir’s Puzzlebox imprint. Deep sea melodies, stabby chords and ravey basslines litter the EP which floats somewhere between shuffling techno and bubbling electro of the Detroit kind. Optic Nerve’s soothing original is a fast-paced slice of electro-techno gold, while Aux 88 up the percussive elements of Tucker’s original, escorting a plodding bassline from out back to up front. The “Detroit vocal Mental mix” sheds all but the basics and pumps up the bass, using a vocodered “Detropolis” vocal as its centrepiece. Discreet Drexciyan pads and Model 500 magic flash throughout the “M5 Central Station Mix”, closing a quintessential Detroit classic.
