VA – Freundschaft [BUR012]
Berlin-based label Burial Soil presents a collaborative electro album initiated by CYRK. Early 2020, they decided to reach out to some of their producer friends as well as artists they’ve been admiring for years, to collaborate on tracks. As they see it, the electro scene is a very close-knit community and it felt more than appropriate to support each other this way. For their album „Freundschaft“ CYRK has collaborated with Steffi, Anthony Rother, Ravn Jonassen, JakoJako, Jensen Interceptor, Alienata, Nite Fleit and David Carretta. BPMs are high on the eight tracks of “Freundschaft”, the end result of this collaborative process, incorporating various influences from electro-adjacent styles like italo, EBM or, unsurprisingly, techno.

Last year I started this section for free/”name your price” music, that people or labels share on bandcamp or other platforms. Here is a selection of free music I came across this year.
VA – Robotics EP [MTRON022]
Anthony Rother links up with Detroit heavyweights Keith Tucker and DJ Di’jital for a deep exploration of psionic robot engineering and extrasensory electro styles. Truly extending the work of Kraftwerk and others, Anthony, Keith and Lamont came to define electro in the late 90s and tirelessly continue to develop their sound to this day, culminating in the Psi Robotics EP – a cold scan of the minds of future machines and their hypnotic influence.
VA – CAREBOT$ (raising money for the NHS and Médecins Sans Frontières)
“The international electro and techno producer community has come together to raise money for two charities doing vital health work during the Covid-19 crisis – NHS Charities Together and Médecins Sans Frontières. The project began in April this year. Anthony Rother returns to his label PSI49NET with the first EP since 2003. The new four-tracker is another sonic exploration of a twisted electro techno sound that pursues the stripped-down energy of techno while maintaining electro’s eccentricity.
VA – Global Surveyor 4 [DE-025]
The German label Dominance Electricity presents Phase 4 of the Global Surveyor various artist album series (launched in 1998). Featuring heavy-weights of the international Electro genre such as Anthony Rother, Hardfloor, Silicon Scally aka Carl Finlow and Heliopause (a project of Germany’s Dynamik Bass System & Detroit’s Keith Tucker of AUX 88) and many more, this carefully selected collection includes a total of 24 productions out of 13 countries / 5 continents ranging between clubbish acid power, deep space cruiser, playful kraftwerkesk melodic downtempo and ambient synth magic.
Anthony Rother – Balkonien [SSPS001]
Dutch label Shipwrec present their next release – a special one-sided pressing – by revered electro specialist Anthony Rother. A pure dancefloor fire that is part techno, part electro. ‘Balkonien’ is a broody affair from the off, with a supple, rubbery bed of kicks down low and a molten synth line up top. As things unfold, a nebulous network of celestial pads spiral about, the drums bounce more and lots of sinewy machine lines dance about and have you doing the same.
