Cloned – Sapphire 1990 EP [MDG003]

Midgar introduce a newcomer for the third release. A great debut for the maltese Cloned, delivering not less than 6 cuts with Sapphire 1990 E.P. The record, way more straightforward and groove centered than the previous Midgar outputs, opens with Sapphire 1990, track that sounds like very nostalgic memories from a timeless rave.

Max_M – Dissertation [MRECLTD024]

Powerfull trippin techno tracks by Max_M on his m_rec label. Opener “Exceeding Brightness” sets the tone, with nagging, intergalactic loop melodies riding a forthright, heavily compressed techno groove. He opts for a deeper approach on “Architectural Lie”, with woozy, near dreamy melodies, thumping kick drums and trippy top-end percussion creating a hypnotic, locked-in groove. Finally, he indulges his melodious side with “Scape Sequences”, where looped Marimba melodies tussle with hissing cymbals and stretched-out percussive builds.

And so the Token juggernaut continues, slaying all before it with some of the best club techno you are likely to find right now. Terra Incognita sees Spanish producer Tadeo debut on the label after a fine succession of 12″s in 2014 and at six tracks long Miguel Sar takes the chance to really explore his range. “Requiem” offers a foreboding beatless opener that is rife with tension, whilst “Deep Space” explores similar territory to the Something from the Sky series by Jeff Mills. Jeff Mills – Woman In The Moon [AXCD046]

Woman In The Moon is a science fiction silent film that premiered on 15 October 1929. It is often considered to be one of the first ‘serious’ science fiction films, written and directed by Fritz Lang, who is the one of the biggest names in German expressionist cinema, the creator of Metropolis (1927). Detroit Techno music producer and a futurist Jeff Mills composed the new sound track for this classic film, initially for the Fritz Lang Film Retrospective event for Cinematheque Francaise in Paris in 2011. Since then, Mills has been consistently performing the soundtrack in the form of a cine-mix.

Planetary Assault Systems – The Eyes Themselves [MOTE041]

Some new Planetary Assault Systems material from Mr Luke Slater is always a welcome sight and The Eyes Themselves finds the techno pioneer on suitably mind bending form. Issued naturally by his own Mote Evolver, this three track 12″ bristles with the sort of intense, physical energy that makes the music feel alive and somewhat alien with the title track a perfect embodiment. Across the six minutes, “The Eyes Themselves” develops from a dark throb into full blown techno psychedelia that possesses the ability to draw the more open minds into another dimension. Similar things could be said about “Strange Attractor” so we will draw your attention to the B side cut “Arc” where intensity is the predominant characteristic across the eight thrilling minutes.

This album is the conclusion of research conducted on theories arguing for us living in a holographic universe. The songs included are parts of a whole that moves the listener towards the idea of understanding music as a universal language that hides within a dimensional leap leading to other universes. Each beat is a part of a primary equation and each song a piece of a second-level puzzle. The complete set is the key that defines the geometry applied to music as the binary expression of geometric mathematics that shapes the vacuum in a space confined by the laws of physics. Taking Detroit Techno as the primary basis for 30drop; this LP intends to develop this type of sound where repetition generates undefined mental structures and pads are the large dimensional containers for vacuum and space. A trip from Detroit’s minimalist, hard, and concise techno that cuts into predefined patterns and creates new boundaries to warm musical spaces in order to accommodate this new way of thinking.

Dino Sabatini / Edit Select – Multiplo [MZXIV]

Uniting the steely dance floor focus of Tony Scott and Sabatini’s immersive, dub-soaked textures was a masterstroke on Motoguzzi’s part. It’s no surprise then that both versions of “Multiplo” are radically different, or that they both stamp each producer’s unique vision of techno. Edit Select’s take is a heavy affair that never veers into senselessly banging sounds. Instead, he lays down a steely rhythm, hissing percussion and waves of dub-soaked effects. On Sabatini’s version, the dub influence isn’t far away, but comes to the surface in a different manner. Lithe back beats act as the backdrop for multi-layered chords and bleeps that gradually emerge from the depths of Sabatini’s understated but powerful arrangement.

DJ Bone – Differ-Ent [DBA018]

Speaking to Resident Advisor recently to accompany his podcast, veteran Detroit artist DJ Bone looked to clarify the distinction behind his new Differ-Ent project, stating it is “darker, more aggressive and straight to the point but still manages to remain beautiful in a very twisted way.” This statement is fully qualified on the two track for Don’t Be Afraid that make up this excellent debut 12″ from the Differ-Ent project. “Differ-Ent (Hrall)” is the more musical of the two, with Bone teasing minor keys and acid squiggles over a stripped back, yet still quite forceful rhythm. “Differ-Ent (Ity)” is where that dark aggression is let loose and is the sort of ominous techno you crave to hear deep into the night.
