Kord – Drum Effort EP [RWT-5]

Next up on Bucharest’s Raw Tools label is Börft co-founder, Johan Sturesson, also known to be part of the Swedish electronic trio, Frak. Always under the radar, he has been operating raw electronics since the late 80’s, developing quite a distinctive sound. As Kord, he has released on several Swedish labels, including his own imprint. The four-track EP consists in music from the private vaults of the producer, that has been kept secret for almost 20 years. Rough and gritty, his analogue approach and stripped down sound define the record. Starting with the rave sounding “Uncle Owl” and then moving to a more darkly atmospheric title track, Kord shows his muscles on the flipside with some more techno infused and bass driven dancefloor cuts.

Magnesii – Fata Oasa EP [RWT-4]

Magnesii delivers a playful blend of house, electro and tropicana for Raw Tools. The title track, ‘Fata Oasa’ is a melodic, lo-fi delight, full of exotic flavours, whilst ‘Building Ultrabot’ shifts to a different spectrum of sounds, with chunky basslines and heart-warming pads. On the flip side, ‘Euphoric 660’, is a haunting house jam with low-pitched vocal samples and sharp percussions. The B-side gets a special 909-led muscle boost by Antenna, known for his dark, but emotional sound.

Costelloe – Infiniti EP [RWT-3]

Next on Raw Tools is Irish producer and Signal Code label owner, Costelloe, delivering two tracks much in the manner of his previous works, both of them at the fine line between techno and house music. While the title track, “Infiniti” is definitely a dance floor track, with its rave pads and solid bassline, “Pheta X” shows a more darker side of Costelloe’s music. Both of these cuts get special treatment from two of the most prolific and respected producers out there, Lerosa and DJ Overdose, rounding off the EP with two amazing, yet diverse remixes.

VernoN – Bud XXL EP [RWT-1]

VernoN switches to Romansoff’s Raw Tools imprint. As you might expect, the Bud XXL EP is jam-packed with intense machine rhythms, body-shaking electronics and twisted acid lines. As a result, each of the three original tracks tiptoes that fine line between jacking analogue house and raw techno. There’s a vintage Chicago feel to “It Ain’t You”, while “Keep On Dancing” layers a flurry of cowbells atop a jaunty bassline and delay-laden machine grooves. The real killer, though, is “Bud XXL”, a spiraling, in-your-face concoction that sounds like a signifier of a coming apocalypse. Glaswegian-in-Bristol Marco Bernadi reworks “It Ain’t You”, turning it into a freaky chunk of alien funk complete with mutant Detroit synths and chugging drum machine rhythms.
