Manuel Tur – Es Cub [FRLP033]

Spontaneity, simplicity and playfulness, combined with the warmth and solitude of an Ibizan hideaway, not to mention the cold, industrial minimalism of Manuels Ruhr Valley Essen roots all make for an interesting fusion on Es Cub. Take opener Ara Anam for example, we could just as easily be on the Space Terrace as we could at Panarama Bar. Tracks such as Werk and Flux combine hints of clipped minimalism with the driving, analogue synth sounds of say Ame or Baikal whilst About To Fall and El Soplo contain both depth and a certain majestic beauty gained from the simple, stripped back, rolling beats and flowing pads. Far from being the throwaway sketches that Manuel modestly implies, we hear strong melodic motifs and hooky samples appearing throughout the entire LP which brings a unique identity to each track as well as adding a cohesive gel to Es Cub.

Jackmate – Halios EP [TURDJR005]

JACKMATE - Halios EP

The Stuttgart papi Michel Baumann alias Soulphiction aka Jackmate presents three new power generators on – Treat Your Dj Right’ equipped with the right measure of steam and courage. On Halios EP he’s getting the juices flowing, however manifested as a compulsion to move. Beyblade’ is a glossily illuminated, sensory-enhanced modern club production which shows that Chicago and Detroit could be sister cities, in the heart of Trollinger-Town! Juan is soaked with pure chi-town pads, and applied, frenetic subterranean bass. Through a fully conscious, shifting rhythm and hi-hat that whispers as if a drum is being stroked with a brush, it manages a compelling groove. Length doesn’t play a role here, answering the question of why anything should be extended when the moment of euphoria has been reached. Sunbeams demonstrates how a ‘whitey’ can produce the same velvety, soulful sound of black music, and with the same understanding to boot.

Abdulla Rashim – Unanimity [NE010]

Defeating apathy by creating his own world, Abdulla Rashims music thinks before it speaks. Untangled energy and drive breathes life into the rigid rhythmic structures, where the wild, almost primal, core illuminates the heartfelt and soulful layers within in his music. This musical contradiction between thought and letting go, acts as the base foundation in Abdulla Rashim’s music. As a celebration and as a aural development, Abdulla Rashim releases his ‘Unanimity’ LP on Northern Electronics.

Covered In Sand – Crescent Shapes Scars [MIRA008]

The release features three abrasive noise workouts. Thud of drums and ritualistic rhythms define the opener Luarica on the A-side alongside a near-melodic whine that stays present throughout the tracks. Orapa (An Interview) on the flip swallows and evokes scuffed voices of a conversation, striving into isolation, while Venetia resumes the haunting rhythm and layers of distortion.

Lory D – MT100 [SR003]

A legendary name in techno, Lory D is back and as strong as when his vinyls were cherished all over the world as his SNS (Sound Never Seen) was printed by Rephlex of Aphex Twin. MT100 is a timeless and genre-free track: it’s just music. The melody is sound-track material for a high profile film with a rhythm which however recall the first drum machines of the eighties.

Francois X – Suspended In A Stasis Field [DM3D008]

The long awaited debut EP of Francois X on DEMENT3D. Much like hundreds of techno records that we love, Francois subtly weaves a canvas of very personal links between sound treatments and life events, time decay and society, spatialization and science-fiction, rumble and voodoo tribe rituals, and delivers some very powerful moments of raw and gritty music.

Transformation – Sketch I [LIES-BLK005]

Deutsche trio killing it on a new LIES BLK. Sandro Stebnitz, Manito Rotschild, and Dieter Flegel met in the late-nineties in Oldenburg Germany while working on the loading dock of the Leifheit Housewares shipping division. Through their monotonous days of shrink wrapping ovens and loading palettes of stainless steel cookware onto tractor trailers, the trio would often relay tall tales to each other simply to pass the time. One such delusional fantasy was that the trio would one day ditch their warehouse jobs and start a band not unlike their mutual hero, Gary Numan. Their fantasy became somewhat of a reality when Dieter gained access to various pieces of musical equipment when his uncle Hans came upon a sudden and untimely death. Unphased by this tragic event, Dieter rallied up his small group and hit the garage, practicing and recording every evening in hopes of making it, just like Gary did. Here we have on record, the only document of their time in the makeshift studio, a 15 minute electronic jam simply titled “Sketch 1”.

Person of Interest – LIES 020.5 [LIES020.5]

Person of Interest, highly sought after and could be lurking in the shady corners under Brooklyn’s JMZ line. On his L.I.E.S. debut we get soupy remnants of what could be called garage house, pieces of high octane techno, and one slow burning grisled tooth number to close this three track EP out. A strong showing and undoubtedly one to keep your eyes on.

Mark Forshaw – Tools Of The Unexpected [MATH075]

For their latest trip into the analogue unknown, Jamal Moss’s Mathematics imprint has turned to John Heckle cohort and occasional Tabernacle type Mark Forshaw. The producer duly delivers an impressively varied and superbly imagined quartet of cuts, heavy on snappy analogue percussion, stargazing synths and icy, out-there atmospherics. There’s some deep but driving underwater techno in the shape of the claustrophobic “Sessions”, a clanking exercise in drum machine love (the intense but woozy “Tolls of the Unexpected”), a deeper, slower tempo trip into melodic analogue deep house territory (“Analog Kicks”), and a acid-flecked jack-track with distinct Detroit techno overtones (“Neptanus”).

Gesloten Cirkel – Submit X [M-X]

Returning to Viewlexx sub-label Murder Capital, Gesloten Cirkel is ready to serve up a full-length album, Submit X. Russian mystery man Gesloten Cirkel has caused quite a stir with his releases on this label as well as Moustache Techno Series and Berceuse Heroique – it is often weird, twisted music that fuses acid and techno and electro into brave new forms. This new album continues in that tradition across ten new cuts. Right from the off Gesloten Circkel spits out the jams – opener ‘Zombiemachine Acid’ is built on a corrugated bed of beats, has slapping percussion and a sharp acid line. After the same track without the acid line comes ‘Submit X’ with its into fractured, loopy sounds and layered up vocal snippets. For unsettling, dark and droning ambient check ‘Stakapella’, or the same sketch with a distant electro beat on ‘Stakan’. ‘Chatters’ is then a grimy post punk electronic track with whirring melodies, malfunctioning synths and plenty of dirt in its make-up and the latter part of the album touches on more paranoid electro, nagging and unsettling techno and whip-snapping acid tracks. Truly unique, esoteric and idiosyncratic, this album is as unpredictable as you would expect from someone like the enigmatic Gesloten Cirkel.

Kabale und Liebe – Sammy Hoboken EP [SWS018]

As a precursor to Kabale Und Liebe’s debut album, Soweso Records releases the ‘Sammy Hoboken EP’ as a teaser of what’s to come. 2014 marks an important phase in Liron’s career as he prepares to unveil his debut album, ‘Realitivity’, which delves deeper into his musical persona and sees the Dutchman go back to basics. The ‘Sammy Hoboken EP’ features 3 cuts from the forthcoming album and with lengths running from 8 to 10 minutes, these tracks are designed to get you into the groove and keep you there. Opening with the deep, percussive workout of the title track which gradually builds its electronic melody, via the funked up techno of ‘The Hunter’ with it’s shuffling beat and dappled synths, to the final production, ‘Too Many Circuses, Not Enough Freaks’ which pounds straight in with its powerful bassline, before the claps take hold on this intense beast.
