Versalife – Asimov’s Code [VIS316]

Versalife’s second release for 20/20 Vision sees Dutch producer Boris Bunnik aka Conforce return with another slab of signature electro. ‘Clandestine Development’ serves up dark tones and melodies layered within insistent electro beats and growling bass, that sounds huge on big room systems. ‘Aegis’ delivers a double dose of mechanical funk, played over atmospheric strings and auditory acid delights. On the B side ‘Lamba’ continues to impress with a moody laidback bass line holding the groove down over a solid rhythm & dystopian keys. Wrapping things up the title track ‘Asimov’s Code’ plays out like war drums from space pounding away after a blissful intro of building synths.

Versalife – Machine Life [VIS314]

Versalife aka Boris Bunnik is one of the most respected producers in electro. He now presents his debut release for 20/20 Vision as the label continues it’s path into the world of pure electronic music. ‘Machine Life’ immediately stood out as one of those rare killer club cuts that works it’s way into a wide range of DJ boxes, simple but massively effective. ‘M05’ returns to more classic sounding Versalife electro with complex layers of synths, strings and analogue squelch all held together by a solid bass hook. On the flip side Bunnik shows off his pedigree in producing Detroit influenced string laden beautiful music with the EP rounded off by ‘Axion’, a heavier trip to the dark side.

Versalife – Polychange [BT016]

Versalife – Self-Replication [TRUST027]

Best known to the techno world as Conforce, Boris Bunnik’s sprawling body of work reaches far beyond his acclaimed techno productions. Recording under names as Silent Harbour, Hexagon, Vernon Felicity, and Versalife he has contributed sublime releases to the genres of ambient, electronic dub, acid house, and electro over the years. It is his Versalife project that now receives its first outing on DJ Glow’s long-running TRUST imprint, and if any further proof is needed that Bunnik is a master of the resurging electro genre, this should easily win over any doubters. ‘Self-Replication’ starts out with a nod to the aquatic innovators of the genre on ‘Raptures of the Deep’, but quickly leaves their many imitators behind in its wake, effortlessly contrasting subtle textures with clanging beats, spiraling arpeggios with grumbling basslines. Bunnik’s sonic boldness peaks on ‘Gentrification’, a sprawling 7-minute journey through jittery rhythms, bottomless echoes, and foreboding harmonies, before ‘Pathogen’ closes the EP almost with a touch of pop, combining a Boards of Canada-style bassline with FM chimes that hark back to the golden days of synth music.

Versalife – Singularity EP [SHIP034]

It’s fair to say that Boris Bunnik has made an impact in his short career. In less than a decade this dutch man, under monikers like Conforce and Versalife, has scaled Electro and Techno with subtle ambient touches and IDM echoes. And that’s exactly what he’s doing for the Singularity EP. Lush pads and flowing bars punctuated by crisp percussion, “Shine Eye” sets the scene. “Autobots” adopts those same brittle beats, this time using them to send dreaming strings skyward. Northern winds swirl around the colder chords of “MILnet”, chords that dawn into absorbing swirls of “Transgenics.” Masterful machine music.

Versalife – Collision With The Past I [FR029]

Sometimes people from different environmental backgrounds cross paths with one another through similar interests, and they notice that they have more in common then a certain taste in music alone. Boris Bunnik (aka Conforce) is hailing from the small scenic Dutch island Terschelling, that can be seen as the complete opposite environmental background as the dirty streets of Rotterdams South Side that drew the first guidelines for Frustrated Funk’s watchword: Mad Drama From Everyday Life. Although the background is opposite, the drama and struggle of daily life seem to have more similarities then one would expect. Struggling creative minds searching for correct paths, fighting to keep focused with daily routines, burning ships, moving forward, trying to bend negativity into something positive, writing music as an outlet for their compulsive need to create. This is our game. No hits, no hype, no bullshit, just the real deal, bringing timeless techno from the heart that will always stay untouched. So here’s FR029, experimental techno from the young master mind thats Versalife.

Hipodrome’s 2013 Review (Part 3 of 3)

Here is the third and final part of my 2013 review, featuring my favorite albums released last year. In the first part of the review, the preferences of hipodrome followers are shown, according to the number of click and stars. In the second part, I presented some of my favorite events and performances from last year.

http://fmacskasy.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/2013.jpg?w=602&h=314

Now here it comes the serious business. Because there are so many good albums and different genders, I took the same approach as in the 2012’s review.

The list is covering all the genders that I like and post on The Hipodrome Of Music, so I came up with no more than 20 gender lists, going from house to techno, disco and funk to electro and new wave …

Here we go.
